My invention relates to an electric induction apparatus and to a coil support between the core and coil structure.
Heretofore it has been customary to provide an adjustable coil support at the ends of the coil of an electrical induction apparatus such as by employing a bolt which upon rotation will.
cause axial movement of a plate thereby adjusting the pressure on the coil. With such a construction the plate will rotate unless some external stop means is employed or in case two space bolts are provided. Also, with such a construction it is possible to extend the bolt too far thu causing damage to the coils or disengaging the cooperating threaded portions.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved adjustable coil support of the abovementioned type.
A further object of my invention is to provide an improved electrical induction apparatus with an adjustable coil support.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent from the following description referring to the accompanying drawing, and the features of novelty which characterize my invention will be pointed out with parv ticularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing Fig. l is a perspective view of a portion of an electrical induction apparatus which is provided with an embodiment of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view in partial section illustrating the adjustable coil support employed in Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawing I have illustrated an electric induction apparatus having a core structure Ill and a coil structure ll. Oppositely disposed angle bars i2 and I! are provided as a core clamp.
In order to provide an adjustable support between an end H of the coil and the core clamps i2 and I3 I provide an adjustable coil support arrangement indicated generally by the numeral l5. Any suitable number of coil supports may be provided and in the construction illustrated in Fig. 1 I have shown two adjustable coil supports on one side which are attached to the core clamp bar I3, one being shown attached to the core support bar l2. Another one not shown it will be understood is attached to the core support bar l2, or any other suitable number may, of course, be employed.
As will be seen more particularly in Fig. 2, the adjustable coil support includes a bracket member l6 which is attached to an externally threaded ring or bolt member H in any suitable manner such as spot welding as is indicated at II. The bracket member. It may be attached to the core clamp structure in any suitable manner. and in the construction illustrated in the draw- 7 Claims. (or. 175-381) ing the bracket I8 is provided with a slot I! through which passes a bolt 20 which is attached to the bar i3. By the use of a slot I rather than a circular opening the coil supporting structure i5 may be adjusted transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the coil. Thus a single size of coil support may be employed in various size transformers. The coil support also includes a plate member 2| which has a surface for abutting against the adjacent end surface I of the coil.
In order to provide an adjustable coupling between the bracket and the plate 2| which abuts the end of the coil, I provide a threaded ring member 22 which cooperates with the external threads on the bolt member The end 'surface 23 of the nut 22 and the adjacent topsurface of the plate 2| are in abutting relation so that upon rotation of the ring 22 the plate 2| will be extended in an axial direction relative to the bracket 56, thus adjusting the pressure on the coils. It will be understood that the bottom of the coils, not shown, are supported in any suitable manner so that extension of the plate 2| will squeeze the cell between the plate 2| and the lower supporting structure.
In order to prevent rotation of the plate upon rotation of the ring 22 I provide a U shaped strip 24 which is attached to the surface of the plate 2| in any suitable manner, such as by welding, as is indicated by the numeral 25. The U shaped strip is provided with a slot 26 on both of the upstanding legs of the U and diametrically opposite holes are provided near the lower edge of the second ring member l1. One hole 21 will be seen in Fig. 2 and it will be understood that a similar hole is placed in the diametrically opposite surface. slot 26 in the U and is of just sufllcient length so as to extend into the holes 21 of the bolt member l1. Since the bracket is attached to the core support and the pin extends into the holes in the ring I! and through the slotted U shaped strip which is attached to the plate 2|, rotation of the ring 22 will cause extension of the plate relative to the bracket without causing relative rotation of the plate 2|. In this manner no force will be impressed on the ends crushing of the coils and also to prevent disengagement of the cooperating threads between the A pin 28 extends through the externally threaded ring I1 and the internally threaded ring 22. The ring may be rotated in any suitable manner and an end portion 30 of a tool is shown in Fig. 2 which has an arcuate portion and a pin 3| which flts into holes 32 in the ring 22 so that suitable pressure may be expended on the ring to cause its rotation.
My improved adjustable coil support may be assembled in any suitable manner, such as follows. with the nut 22 screwed on to bolt member II the bracket may be attached to the core support and suitablypositioned due to the slot II. The plate 2| may then be placed on the ends of the coil with the slotted U shaped strip 23 extending into the hollow portion of the bracket ring member ll; Since holes 32 are provided in the nut 22 on diametrically opposite sides thereof, the nut 22 may be so turned that the holes in the rings l1 and 22 and the slot 26 in the U shaped member will be in registry. The pin 23 may then be inserted, the pin being just long enough so that when it is pushed with opposite ends in the holes 21 of the ring member H the pin 23 will not extend into the holes 32 in the ring 22. The wrench 30 may then be em ployed so as to turn the ring 22 sufliciently to obtain the desired pressure on the coils. In order to insure that the pin 28 will not be accidentally .jarred into one of the holes 32, the holes 32 are so positioned in the ring 22 relative to the end surface 23 that the holes 32 will line up with the holes 21 when the surface 23 is just out of engagement with the adjacent surface of the plate 2|. Thus upon rotation of the ring 22 so as to extend the plate 2| the holes 32 will move in an axial direction out of alignment with the holes 21 so that the pin cannot be removed until the ring 22 is completely retracted so that it is out of engagement with the plate 2|.
Although I have shown and described particular embodiments of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the particular embodiments described, and I intend in the appended claims to cover all modifications which do not depart from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. An adjustable coil support for electric induction apparatus which apparatus has a coil with an end thereof adjacent a core clamp comprising, in combination, a bracket member having an externally threaded ring adapted to be supported on said core clamp, a plate having one surface adapted to abut against an adjacent end of said coil, an internally threaded ring threaded on said bracket ring and having an end surface abutting against an adjacent surface of said plate so that rotation of said ring relative to said bracket ring will cause movement of said plate to adjust the pressure on said coil, and means cooperating with said plate and bracket so as to prevent rotation of said plate upon rotation of said ring.
2. An adjustable coil support for an electric induction apparatus having a core and coil structure including a bracket member having a threaded portion adapted to be supported on said core, a plate adapted to abut against an adjacent surface of said coil, ring means having threads adapted to cooperate with said bracket threaded portion and a surface abutting against said plate so that rotation of said ring will cause movement of said plate relative to said core to adjust the pressure on said coil, and stop means asosnee for limiting the extension of said plate relative to said bracket.
3. An adjustable coil support for an electric induction apparatus having a core and coil structure including a bracket member having a threaded portion adapted to be supp rted on said core, means adapted for adjustably attaching said bracket to said core, a plate for abutting against an adjacent surface of said coil, ring means having threads adapted to cooperate with said bracket threaded portion and a surface abutting against said plate so that rotation of said ring will cause movement of said plate relative to said core to adjust the pressure on said coil, and stop means for limiting the extension of said'plate relative to said bracket.
4. A coil support for an electric induction apparatus including a bracket member adapted to be supported on a core clamp structure, plate means adapted to abut against an adjacent coll surface, adjustable coupling means between said bracket and said plate for extending said plate relative to said bracket to adjust the pressure on the coil, and means cooperating with said bracket and said plate for preventing relative rotation between said bracket and said plate and for limiting the extension between said bracket and said plate.
5. An adjustable coil support for an electric induction apparatus, including a bracket member adapted to be supported on a core clamp structure, said bracket having a threaded member, plate means adapted to abut against a coil, is second threaded member adapted to cooperate with said bracket threaded member and upon relative rotation causing extension of said plate relative to said bracket to adjust the pressure on the coil, and means cooperating with said bracket and said plate for limiting the extension of said plate and preventing rotation thereof upon relative rotation of said first and second threaded members.
6. An adjustable coil support including a bracket member, means for adjustably attachin said bracket to a supporting structure, said bracket having a bolt member, a plate member adapted to abut against a coil, a nut member threaded to said bolt member and adapted to abut against said plate so that upon rotation of said bolt said :plate may be extended, a slotted U shaped strip attached to said plate, said bolt member having diametrically opposed openings, and a pin passing through said slot in said U shaped strip and extending into said openings so as to prevent rotation of said nut.
7. An adjustable coil support including a bracket member, means for adjustably attaching said bracket to a supporting structure, said bracket having a bolt member, a plate member adapted to abut against a coil, a nut member threaded to said bolt member and adapted to abut against said plate so that upon rotation of said bolt said plate may be extended, a slotted U shaped strip attached to said plate, said bolt member having diametrically opposed openings, and a pin passing through said slot in said U shaped strip and extending into said openings so as to prevent rotation of said nut, said nut member having openings which are in registry with said openings in said bolt when said nut is out of engagement with said plate so that said pin may be inserted into said slotted U shaped strip through said openn in said nut.
