Application November 16, 1943, Serial No. 510,467
3 Claims.
This invention relates to cribs for infants, and has for its object the provision of a portable crib for housing an infant in which the infant may rest comfortably and be Well protected.
'Ihe invention provides a light, portable crib for housing the infant in any desired natural position and comprises a walled compartment for receiving a mattress and in which the infant reposes, a removable cover by means of which the infant is secured in the crib, one or more windows and Ventilating means. The improved travel crib of the invention provides a comfortable place for the infant to lie and sleep, or even play, in which the infant is fully protected from crowds, animals, insects and the weather. While. the travel crib may have many uses as a portable housing for infants, it is especially important in traveling on busses, trains, aeroplanes, and the like, where large space is not available and excessive weight is a definite hindrance to travel. It is very desirable also that an infant be contentd and quiet while travelling and comfort coupled with a sense of security without a realization of confinement are necessary conditions. To these ends, the invention in its more complete aspects, comprises space for a mattress on which the child may be at full length, means for the free circulation of fresh air and windows which light the crib and permit the infant to see the surroundings and familiar persons. By excluding rain, snow, drafts, noise and other disturbances, while providing a comfortable place without a feeling of close connement, the infant can travel in safety with a minimum of annoyance. In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the removable cover is at tached to the walled compartment by hinges, latches or. the like and is preferably shaped to a central ridge to which a handle is attached and which is strong enough to support the entire load.
The sloping cover not only provides a strong handle attachment, but supports for the windows which are preferably made of a light non-shatterable material such as Cellophane, Lucite and the like.
There are other novel features of the invention which will be better understood after considering the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a travel crib of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the portable crib of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The travel crib illustrated in the drawing comprises two main parts, a walled compartment l and a removable cover 2. The walled compartment is an elongated rectangular Astructure made of metal, plywood, or the like, comprising a bottom 3, end walls 4 and 5 and side walls 6 and l. While it is not necessary, it is nevertheless, advantageous to provide a little more length than necessary for receiving the mattress 8 to permit the use of an end partition 9 which provides a convenient space Ii) for the infants accessories. .At any convenient place in the walls, such asin the end Walls, a num-ber of small holes Il may be made for ventilation.
The cover 2 is shaped like the roof of a house with sloping sides I5 and I6 and triangular end closures l1 and I8. The sloping sides converge to the central ridge I9 which may be suitably reenforced as with the ridge pole or rail 20 for distributing the load supported on the handle 2|. The windows 23 and 24 are preferably mounted in the frames of doors 25 and 2B and are attached by means of hinges 2l and 28 to the sloping sides. The doors may be opened to gain access to the infant or entirely .removed when desired. The windows may be made of re-enforced glass or of any suitable clear sheet material such as Cellophane. In order to give more complete ventilation than is possible with the holes Il, a screen 29' is inserted in the triangular end closure. A similar screen may be installed in the opposite end closure.
The cover is removably attached to the walled compartment by means of four fasteners 30, 3|,
' 32, and 33. These may be hooks, or trunk latches,
which when opened, permit the cover to be detached completely. The two front fasteners may be like hooks on trunk latches and the two back fasteners ordinary hinges or special hinges with slip joints which permit the cover to be opened as a door, or entirely removed merely by opening the cover and pushing it endwise to disengage the two parts of the hinges.
I claim:
