A. BERNEY.
. Spark Arrrester. No. 239,294.- V Patentd March 22,1881.
Ink/Emma WITNESSES UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED BERNEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO NATHIEL A. DUTTON, OF SAME PLACE.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent- No. 239,294, dated March 22, 1881. Application filed January 3, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED BERNEY, ot' the city of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spark-Deflectors for Stacks, which operate in conjunction with a double stack, cone, and saddle; and the objects of my improvements are to provide inclined planes between the inner and outer stacks, so that when the sparks are deflected by the conethey shall slide down the deflectors into the holes in the saddle, into a pipe or pipes, to convey them into a receiver or furl'iace, or to the fire-box, to prevent the sparks lodging between the holes in a pyramidal form, so that by any sudden jar they shall not fall down and fill the holes up, and also to prevent the corrosion that a mass of wet sparks and dust will make when allowed to remain between the walls of the inner and outer stacks, and'furnish a lasting and almost indestructible deflector. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a stack with my invention inclosed. Fig. 2 is a View of the deflectors as cast.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The solid curved deflectors with inclined planes are made of fire-clay, in compact form, burned hard. (Cast-iron can be used made A shape.) These rest upon the saddle B, with hole 0 through it between the outer stack, 0, and inner stack, D, and should fit closely. The solid deflectors A are provided with a recess, a, which fits between the outer shell, G, and the flange b of the saddle B. The deflectors may, however, be made without the recess,
if desired; but to fill up the space between the inner and outer shells a recess should be cast in the saddle, to prevent the deflectors moving over the holes O. On the top of the inner stack, D, are bolted rods E, to which is placed a cone, G. A netting, H, is affixed in the usual place in the stack. Below the saddle is a pipe, I. This pipe can be extended to the fire-box or to a receiver for the sparks outside the boiler.
I. am aware that prior to my invention feathers or guides made of sheet metal have been used, but are practically useless, as they cause the dust to lodge below them, and by the condensation of steam to form a wet mass, that rusts out the stacks, and the guides wear out very quickly. I therefore do not claim them'; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The removable half-circular pyramidalshaped solid deflector, cast of any material and provided with a recess, a-, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the cast half-circular pyramidal-shaped deflector A, constructed as described, with the inner stack, D, and outer stack, 0, saddle B, and pipe I.
3. The combination of the stack having mesh H with inner stack, D, with cone Gr resting on it, saddle B, with openings 0, containing the deflector A, adjacent to and coincident with pipe I, for conveying sparks to a furnace or other receptacle.
ALFRED BERNEY. Witnesses:
