In `a railway car truck, a side frame having spaced columns and .an intervening bolster opening, a spring group on said `frame in said opening, a 'bolster member supported from said group and having a pocket 'in at least one side thereof, and a wedge surface in said pocket Vsloping toward the adjacent column, a Wedge member in said pocket'in engagement with said surface and in frictional engagement with said column along a vsurface extending transversely lof ysaid frame, a 'substantially vertical coil spring Vin said 4opening 'and seated against one of said members, `a substantially vertical 'bolt sleeved within said spring, a spring plate on one rend -of said bolt in abutment with said spring, means operatively connecting the other end `of ysaid -bolt with rthe Vother of -said members, and a nut ori-said -bolt for adjustably compressing said spring lplate against lsaid spring, said bolt extending through Aan opening in 'said bolster member and being housed Vtherein for a substantial portion of the length of ysaid bolt. 2. 4. .In a railway car truck, aside frame having vspaced columns .and anrintervening `bolster opening, a spring `group yon said frame in said opening, abolstermember 'supported from said group and having .apocket in at least one vside thereof, and 'awedge surface in'said pocket sloping downwardly .toward .the 'adjacent column, a wedge member ysaid `pocket .in engagement with said vsurface and in frictional -engagement with lsaid column along a yflat substantially vertical surface lying in la plane 'approximately perpendicular to the lllane of Isaid frame, a substantially vertical coil springzin said'opening and seated against one of said members, a substantially vertical bolt sleeved within said spring, aspring plate on one end of said bolt in abutment with said spring, means operatively connecting .the other end 'of said bolt =with 'th'e other of vsaid members, ,and a nut on said bolt for adjustably compressing said spring plate against said spring.

In a Arailway car truck, a side frame having spaced columns land lan intervening bolster opening, `a spring Igroup on said frame in said .openvving, abolster supported from said group and hav- `ingzvvedge surfaces at opposite sides thereof sloping downwardly towardrespective columns, friction lshoes in engagement with respective of said :surfaces and in .frictional engagement with re spective columns, resilient means in said opening .and independent of said group, said means being compressed against a downwardly facing surface on .said bolster, and means for adjustably compressing vsaid, resilient means, said compressing meansincluding substantially verticalrigid means .extending .through said bolster :and operatively connected to saidshoes for transmitting reaction of saidresilientmeans thereto.

In a bolster for a railway cartruck, a box-Y like member havingitopand rbottom walls and spaced transverse walls merging' therewith, said top wall having a4 downwardlyoifset portion intermediatesaid transverse walls, and oppositely sloping diagonal walls merging with said, .offset portion andsaid bottom wall at Yoppositesdes of the bolster, a ,spring seat on the bottom of said offset portion, an opening through saidr` portion centrally of said seat, and an opening through said bottom wall in alignment vwith saidiseat and adapted for th'e receptionv of an associated spring.

In a bolsterfor'a railway car truck, aboxlike memberv having top .and bottom walls and spaced transverse walls merging therewith, said top wall havingr a downwardly offset portion intermediate said 'transverse walls andl defining Vtherewith a recess for the reception of actuating means for anassociated friction absorbing device, and oppositely sloping diagonal walls merging with said offset portion and said bottom wall at opposite sides of the bolster, said diagonal walls presenting wedge surfaces for cooperationV wit associated friction shoes.

In a railway car truck, a sideframe having spacedcolumns andan intervening bolster open-r ing, a spring group on said frame in said opening, a bolster supported from saidv group, said bolster having wedge means at opposite sides thereof, friction shoes in wedge engagement-with re` spective wedge'means and in frictional engagement with respective columns, resilient means in said bolster opening and compressed against aV wallof saidfbolster, and means connecting the bottom of said'resilient means with said shoes.
A16. In a railway car truck, a sidevfr'ame having spaced columns andan intervening bolster opening, a spring group on said frame in said wall of said bolster, and means supporting the bottom of said resilient means from said shoes.

In a railway car truck, a side frame having spaced columns and an intervening bolster opening, a spring group on said frame in said opening, a bolster member on said group h'aving a Wedge surface on at least one side thereof, sloping downwardly toward the adjacent column, a friction shoe member engaging said surface andA also engaging said adjacent column along a surface extending transversely of said frame, and actuating means for said shoe member comprising resilient means in said bolster opening between said columns compressed against one of said members, a substantially vertical bolt and nut assembly connected to said resilient means, and means affording an operative connection beween said assembly and the other of said memers.
18. In a railway car truck comprising a side frame including spaced columns and a bolster member spring-supported from said frame between said columns, the combination of a wedge member in wedge engagement with said bolster member and in frictional engagement with the adjacent column along a surface extending transversely of the frame, resilient means compressed against one of said members, and vertical means extending through both of said members for transmitting reaction of said resilient means to the other of said members.
19. In a railway car truck comprising a side frame including spaced columns and a bolster member spring-supported from said frame between said columns, the combination of a wedge' member in wedge engagement with said bolster member and in frictional engagement with the adjacent column along a surface extending transversely of the frame, resilient means compressed against one of said members, and vertical means extending through said members for transmitting reaction of said resilient means to the other of said members, said resilient means being housed for the major portion of its length within the bolster member.
20. In a railway car truck comprising a side frame including spaced columns and a bolster spring-supported from said frame between said columns, friction means including friction elements in wedge engagement with said bolster and in frictional engagement with said columns, resilient means compressed against abutment means on the bolster, and means for transmitting reaction of said resilient means to said elements including a member extending longitudinally of said frame and operatively engaged with said elements.A
21. In a railway car truck comprising a side frame including spaced columns and a box-section bolster resiliently supported from said frame between said columns, the combination of friction shoes in wedge engagement with said bolster and in frictional engagement with said columns, resilient means compressed against downwardly facing abutment means on the top wall of said bolster, and means for transmitting reaction of said resilient means to said shoes including a rigid member extending longitudinally of said frame and operatively engaged with said shoes.
22. In a railway car truck comprising a side frame including spaced columns and a bolster spring-supported from said frame between said columns, the combination of friction means including shoes in wedge engagement with said bolster and in frictional engagement with respective columns along surfaces approximately parallel with the longitudinal axis of said bolster,
resilient means compressed against the tops of said shoes, and vertical means for transmitting reaction of said resilient means to said bolster comprising rigid members extending through portions of said bolster and respective shoes for connection to respective resilient means.
23. In a railway car truck comprising a side frame including spaced columns and a bolster spring-supported from said frame between said columns, the combination of friction shoes in wedge engagement with wedge faces on said bolster and in frictional engagement with respective columns along substantially vertical surfaces approximately parallel to the longitudinal axis of said bolster, resilient means compressed against upwardly facing abutment means on said shoes, and means for transmitting reaction of said resilient means to said bolster comprising bolt and nut assemblies connected thereto and to' said resilient means, each of said bolt and nut assemblies extending through an opening in said bolster interrupting the associated face.
24. In a railway car truck comprising a side frame including spaced columns and a bolster spring-supported from said frame between said columns, the combination of a friction shoe in frictional engagement with the adjacent column along a surface extending approximately parallel with the longitudinal axis of the bolster, said shoe being in wedge engagement with said bolster, resilient means compressed against upwardly facing abutment means on said shoe and a rigid member extending through overlapping portions of said shoe and said bolster for transmitting reaction of said resilient means thereto.
25. In a railway car truck, a side frame including spaced columns, a spring group supported by said frame, a bolster supported by said group between said columns, a friction shoe having a wedge face in complementary engagement with a wedge face on said bolster, said shoe being in frictional engagement with the adjacent column along a surface approximately perpendicular to the longitudinal plane of said frame, resilient means compressed against said shoe, and a bolt and nut assembly operatively connected to said resilient means and to said bolster, said assembly extending through openings in said shoe and said bolster interrupting said faces.
26. In a railway car truck comprising a side frame including a column and a bolster member spring-supported from said frame adjacent said.
column, the combination of friction means including a shoe member in wedge engagement with the bolster member and in frictional engagement with said column along a surface extending transversely of said frame, resilient means compressed against abutment means on one of said members, and means for transmitting reaction of said resilient means to the other of said members comprising rigid vertical means extending through overlapping portions of said members.
