Description

' (ModeL) 0. P. KBNYON.
. Cotton Planter.
No.. 239,256. r Patented March'2-2, I881.-
lllllllfllll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. EENYON, OF HARES STORE, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO i HIMSELF AND JOS'. S. KENYON, OF SAME PLACE.
COTTON-PLANTER.
.-- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,256, dated March 22, 1881.
' Application filed February 3,1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. KENYON, of Hares Store, in the county of Johnston and State of North Carolina, have invented cer- 5 tain new useful Improvements in Cotton-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of refto erence marked thereon, which form part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a bottom-plan view, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section, of my invention.
'The object of this invention is to provide a 1 simple, inexpensive, yet very effective means of dropping and covering cotton-seed; and to to this end it consists, essentially, in the peculiar construction and arrangement of mechanism by which the stirrer is operated.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A designates the side pieces; B, the seed- 25 box; C, an ordinary colter; D, a wheel of suitable circumference, provided on each side with pins 61, and which is journaled in front of the seed-box, as fully seen in the drawings.
E is the co 'erer, secured to or near the rear end of the frame.
Across the top of the seed-box, and also on a vertical line beneath the frame-work or side pieces, are secured the cross-bars c a.
1) represents a rock-shaft, which passes ver- 3 tically through the center of the seed-box and is journaled in the cross-bars eta. Through this rock-sh aft pass radial arms 0 c, which serve as stirrers to the seed when the machine is on a forward movement, as will be presently 4.0 more fully explained.
The bottom of the seed-box is provided with two slots, extending from the front and rear ends nearly to the opening through which the rock-shaft passes. A little below the under 5 side of the seed-box, and upon the rear side of the rock-shaft, is secured the cross-head g, near each end of which is driven a staple, c, to which are hooked the two pitmen or arms h h. The under side of these arms, near their forward ends, is provided with a notch, which is caught by the pins d when the wheel D is given a forward motion, and alternately drawn forward, thus conveying to the rock-shaft a reciprocating motion. The pins on each face of the wheel are directly opposite each other, 5 5 but so arranged with respect to those on the opposite side that a line drawn between the two pins on one side would intersect at the center a line drawn between those on the other side at right angles.
It will be observed that when the machine has a forward motion the stirrer will perform the desired functions; but in backing no motion is communicated to them, as the pins in the wheel slip under the pitmen or arms without acting thereon.
I am aware that a seed-slide has heretofore been reciprocated in a seed-box by means of pins on a drive-wheel, connected by a pitman with the slide; and I am also aware that a stirrer has heretofore been rocked or partially revolved by similar means and 1 therefore lay no claim to such constructions, which differ from mine in that the stirrers in my construction perform the double functions of stirrers and feeders of the seed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the wedge-shaped frame A, provided with a colter and coverer,
E, of the drive-wheel D, having pins (Z on its opposite faces, arranged as set forth, detachable notched pitmen h, each provided with a hooked rod on its rear end, cross-head 9', se- 8 cured to the rock-shaft and provided with staples 6, vertical rock-shaft I), having the stirrers and feeders e, and slotted seed-box B, the whole constructed, arranged, and operated in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES P. KENYON.
