FOUNTAIN ATTACHMENT FOR PENS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,244, dated March 22, 1881.

Application filed March 31, 1880.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. GREEN, of the city of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a certain new and Improved Fountain Attachment for Pens, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that kind of fountain attachment consisting of a wire, strip, or plate, which is applied to a pen in such aman- 1o ner thatink in considerable quantity will be held between said device and the pen, thus obviating the necessity of frequently dipping the pen in the inkstand.

The device consists of a metallic strip or plate which has an upwardly-inclined" front end, a, tapering to a point, which isintended, when the attachment is in place on the pen, to be in proximity to the under side of the pen o nib or point, as indicated in Fig. 3. Back-of the part a the strip has straight parallel sides upwardly-turned to form flanges b, which are intended to fit on and clasp the parallel side edges of the pen back of the pen nib or point,

The tapered front portion, a, of the attachment does not, at its side edges, rest against the pen, but along these edges there is, between the attachment and the pen, a narrow opening, as shown at d.

Under the arrangement described the pen can be cleaned and freed from ink by wiping the upper and under faces and side edges of the pen-point on a wet sponge. In so doing the inkwill be drawn off through the slit in the pen, the slit 0 in the attachment, and the side openings or slits 01.

By forming the device with the parallel flanges b it is adapted to be applied to a pen (No model.)

without requiring any change or special construction of the pen, and maybe adjusted 1ongitudinally thereon, according to the exigencies of the case.

The attachment at the rear is provided with a downward projection, e, to facilitate its application to, or removal from, or adjustment upon, the pen. The projection is formed by bending down the rear edge of the plate or strip, as shown.

1t will, of course, be necessary to manufacture the attachment in different sizes corresponding to the different sizes and styles of pens in the market.

The attachment, constructed as described, possesses decided advantages over any others of which I have knowledge. It is inexpensive and easily manufactured. While carried by the pen, it requires no special construction or change of form of the pen. It can be adjusted back and forth on' the pen with ease, while at the same time its parallel flanges, which embrace and clasp the sides of the pen, hold the attachment firmly and securelyin any position of adjustment. The projection or finger-piece e at the rear is of material assistance and advantage, affording a ready means of securing the adjustment, removal, or application of the attachment without removing the pen from the pen-holder and without soiling the fingers.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. The metallic plate or strip formed with a tapered and upwardly-turned front portion, a, the upwardly-turned parallel side flanges back of the part a, for fitting over and claspin g the sides of the pen backof the pen nib or point, and the slit or opening 0, and adapted to be applied to the under side of a pen of ordinary construction, as hereinbefore set forth.

2. The fountain attachmenthavin g thepoint or front portion a, the parallel side flanges, b, the slit 0, and the projection or finger-piece e, 5 as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
