Description

Des. 25, 1945. J BILAN 2,391,382
HEATING UNIT Filed Nov. 5, 1945 IN VEN TOR.
. shown therein a Patented Dec. 25, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HEATING UNIT John Bilan, Flint, Mich. Application November 5, 1943, Serial No. 509,963 2 Claims. (oi. are- 34) The present invention relates to burners and has for its main object the provision of a burner constructed entirely of glass within which electric wire coil is imbedded, so that when electricity is passed through the coil the entire glass is heated.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a heater including a glass supporting member for electric wire, which supporting member is supportably positioned within.
a cylinder.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views;
Fig. 1 is a top elevationaLview of the burner;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3is a vertical cross-sectional view through the heater;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the glass supporting member; and
Fig. 5 is a. fragmentary cross-sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the present drawing there is glass plate III which is provided on its bottom with a plurality of integrally formed and concentrically arranged annular ridges H which constitute the support for said plate It). Imbedded within said glass plate I is electric wire coil l2, which is distributed throughout the plane of said plate In, the twoends of said coil l2 extending beyond the perimeter of said plate I0 and bound into cord B which connects with a conventional switch Hi and from there connects with the usual socket (not shown) which in turn connects with a source of electricity.
The wire in coil i2 is made of the usual high resistance metal so thatthe same may heat to a great degree of temperature when electricity is passed therethrough. Glass used in plate it is of the "pyrex" type, which does not crack when under the influence of a high temperature.
A plurality of transverse openings i is made in plate ID, in a spaced relation, transversely of the body of plate In and between the several strands of coil I2, for the purpose of providing draft through said plate l0.
When said plate I0 is placed upon a smooth surface, impervious to fire, and rested therein by its ridges l i, and electricity is open by switch it, plate in will form a burner of high intensity upon which pots may be placed for boiling or heating the contents thereof.
Referring to the modified form of the present invention illustrated in Figs. 3 to 5, both inclusive, there is shown therein a glass support l6 which includes a plurality of Wings ll arranged in a relative angular formation. Electric wire coil it is imbedded within grooves 59 made on both faces of said wings E'L'the ends of said coil is connect into cord 20 which in turn connects with a switch such as switch it.
Said support it is placed within cylinder 2!, and there rests by one of its ends upon a cross support 22 made adjacent the lower end of said cylinder 2|. Aifixed to that end of cylinder 2! is a plurality of supporting legs 23. d
When the electricity is open and coil i8 is heated to a great degree, draft is created within cylinder 2! for bringing about a constant circulation' within said cylinder 2| and around wings I! of support i6 for th purpose of constantly drawing off the heated air from the cylinder, thereby providing a very efflcient heater.
If desired,-cylinder 2i may form a support for plate ID, in which case plate In could be rested upon the upper end of cylinder 2|, with the outer edge of the outermost annular ring ll adjacent the inner periphery of said cylinder 2|, by virtue of which arrangement said outermost ring ll would constitute means for preventing plate Hi from shifting laterally and out of said cylinder 2i.
While there is described herein a preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be mad therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
l. A heating unit comprising a plurality o i' glass plates, said plates being of a substantially rectangular formation and by one of their edges said plates being joined to effect radial formation, said plates upon their faces being provided with a continuous groove, and a metallic wire of high resistance imbedded in said groove.
2. A heating unit comprising a plurality of polygonal plates of material having low electrical conductivity, by one of their edges said plates being Joined to effect radial formation, said plates upon their faces being provided with a continuous groove, and a metallic wire of high resistance imbedded in said groove.
