Claims.
This invention relates to pocket constructions and more particularly to multi-compartment pockets, especially for garments.
An object ofthe invention is to provide a multicompartment pocket so formed or constructed that pocket parts'attached to a backing web or the like, for example part of a garment, can lie flat against the backing web so as to present a. neat appearance, but in which the pocket or compartment-forming parts can be expanded to provide compartments of large capacity.
Another object is to provide a pocket construction of the character stated in'which intermediate and outer'webs are joined to the backing :veb by 'expansible vV-shaped attaching edge seclOIlS.
A further object is to provide a pocket construction having mating V-shaped attaching edge sections joined at a pocket corner in an improved manner. r
Other objects will become apparent from a readingof the following detail description, the appended claims, andthe accompanying drawings, in which: v 17 Figure 1 is a front view'of a pocket construction embodying the invention;
t Figure 2 is a section on the ure 1; V
Figure 3- is a section on the line3 3 of Figure 1; I V
Figure 4 is a fragmentary section of a bottom edge construction drawn on an enlarged scale;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary section of aside edge construction drawn on an enlarged scale;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary section on the line 6-6 of Figure 1; a
Figure 7 is a plan view of a cut blank for forming an outer web member;
Figure 8 is a plan view of a cut blank for forming an intermediate web member;
Figure 9 is a plan View of a binding strip;
Figure 10 shows the blank of Figure 5 after" I its edge sections have been folded;
Figure 11 shows a modified assembly of intermediate and outer webs in which the entire outer web, including V-shaped attaching sections thereof, is disposed outside the intermediate section; and
Figure 12 is a view showing the intermediate and outer webs assembled as shown in Figure 11 with the binding strip added.
The illustrative embodiment shown in the drawings comprises a multi-compartment pocket including an outer web A, and an intermediate web B formed and attached in a novel manner line 1 2 of Figpartments.
to a backing web C which may be, for example; a part of a garment. The pocket construction has a side edge I and a bottom edge 2 along which the outer web A and intermediate web are joined to the backing web C. Along the opposite side edge 3 the intermediate web B is joined throughout its length to the backing web 0 and the outer web A is joined to the web C only adjacent the pocket bottom along the short A diagonal edge 4 of the outer web extends from the top of the line 3 to a central part of the top edge 5 of the intermediate section. The diagonal edge 4 may be hemmed as shown 'at 6 in Figures 1 and 2 but is not joined tom '2 by expansible means, preferably pleats or sections with accordion-like folds enabling all three webs to lie close to each other when the compartments are empty but permitting the webs A and B to move away from the web C to expand or increase the capacity of the pocket oom- As shown in'Figures 1, 3 and v5.5the edge portion of the outer web A along the pocket side I is formed as a V-shaped attaching section 8 including a part 8 folded in under the web- A, and a free edge part 8'" return-folded under the part 8 The free edge of the part 8 is stitched at 9 to the backing web C, and preferably is turned under at 8. The contiguous edge portion of the intermediat web B overlaps and is joined to the attaching section 8, preferably being stitched as at ID to the attaching section part 8. By folding the edge of the web B at H andspacing the line of stitching l0 from the fold H, expansion can take place between the webs A and B along the pocket side I A line of stitching I! may be run, adjacent the return fold between the parts 8 and 8 .for assisting in maintaining the accordion-likenature of the attaching section 8.
As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 the edge portion of the outer web A along the pocket bottom 2 is formed as a V-shaped attaching section l3 including a part [3 folded in under the web A and a free edge part l3 return-folded under the part l3. The free edge of the part l3 is stitched as at M to the backing web C, and preferably is 2 turned under at 3. The contiguous edge portion of the intermediate web B overlaps and is joined to the attaching section B, and may be stitched as at IE to the fold, between the web A and the attaching section part 13*, the extreme edge N5 of the intermediate web B lying against the part I 3* as clearly shown in Figure 4. A line of stitching I3 may be run adjacent the return fold between the parts l3 and 13 for assisting in maintaining theaocordion-like nature of the attaching section l3.
Figures '7 to 12 inclusive show diagrammatically the basic or general forms of the blanks forming the webs A and B, and th binding 1, and indicate the sequence of steps in assembling the parts. Figure '7 shows the cut blank from which the outer web member A is formed. The blank includes a body portion, parts 8 and8 for forming the V-shaped attaching section 8, and parts l3 and l3 for forming the V-shaped attaching section l3. A diagonal edge strip I! is provided for hemming as shown in Figures 1 and 2. A part is cut out at the meeting ends of the edge sections 8 and I3 to provide resultant mating end edges 8 and [3 on the parts 8 and l3 respectively. The cut out also provides resultant mating end edges '8 and I? on the parts 8' and I3 respectively.
After the sections 8 and I3 are folded the end edge E is stitched to the end edge I3 and the end edge 8 is stitched to the end edge I3 This forms a very neat strong corner.
Preferably the lower corners of the intermediate web B are cut off as indicated in Figure 8 in order to avoid bunching of material at the corners when the webs A and B are assembled.
In order that the diagrammatic views, Figures 7 to 12 inclusive, may be as simple as possible so as to show the general organization at a glance, some of the parts shown in Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, for example the turned under hems 8 and 13 have been omitted from the diagrammatic views The pocket construction disclosed embodies the invention in the form now preferred, but it will be understood that changes may be made without departing from the invention'as defined in the claims.
Iclaim:
1. In a multi-compartment pocket construction a backing Web; an intermediate web; an outer web; pleated edge portions on said outer web forming V,-shaped attaching sections; stitching joining free edges of said attaching section to said backing web; and other stitching joining the edges of said intermediate web to said attaching sections.
2. In a multi-compartment pocket construction a backing web; an intermediate web; an outer web; pleated edge portions on said outer web forming V-shaped attaching sections; and stitching joining free edges of said attaching sections to said backing web, edges of said intermediate web overlapping said V-shaped attaching sections respectively; and stitching joining said edges of said intermediate Web to said V-shaped attaching sections respectively.
3. In a multi-c-ompartment pocket construction a backing web; an intermediate web; an outer web; pleated edge portions on said outer web forming V-shaped attaching sections; and stitchmg joining free edges of said attaching sections to said backing web, edges of said intermediate web extending between said outer web and the portions of said V-sh-aped sections immediately adjacent said outer web; and stitching joining said edges of said intermediate web to attaching portions only on the sides of the vs which are adjacent said outer web.
4. In a multi-compartment pocket construction, a backing web; an intermediate Web; an outer web; and means including pleated V-shaped attaching sections joining contiguous edges of said intermediate web and said outer web to said backing web with freely expansible portions of the V- shaped sections being disposed between said'backing Web and the edges of both the intermediate web and the outer web.
5. A multi-compartment pocket construction as defined in claim 1 in which the outer web cornprises a body portion, :two intersecting V-shaped' edge sections each of which includes a first part folded in under the body portion and a free. edge part return-folded under said first part, there being a cut-out at the meeting ends of said edge sections providing resultant mating end edges on the respective first parts and resultant mating end edges on the respective free edge parts; and stitching joining said end edges to the respectively mating end edges.
