Description

I No Model.)
I CHANGE. v Spring Catch for Doors and Shutters.
No. 239,685. Patented March 22, I881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' WILLIAM M. CHANCE, on DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
SPRING-CATCH FOR DOORS AND SHUTTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,085, dated March 22, 1881 Application filed January 21,1881. (N model.)
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. CHANGE,-
of a flat spring turned up at one end, and provided with a suitable slat and hole for securing it with screws, and operating in conjunction with a screw fastened to the surface of the article opposing the surface it is designed to be secured against, said spring being provided with a suitable knob or projection for the purpose of unfastening. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation, showing a series of shelves in transverse section, and a door with spring attached, showing door secured. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of shelf, showing posi' tion of spring before the door is closed. Fig. 3 is a plan of spring-catch.
A is the door, and B B B the shelves.
0 is the spring-catch, made of a strip of spring metal, and provided with a hole, D, by which the catch is secured to the shelf with the screw (1.
E is a slat, through which a screw, 13, is passed and secured to the shelf, to prevent a lateral displacement of the catch.
The end of the spring is turned at right angles, forming the hook Gr, so that when the door is closed the hook G will engage with the head of the screw H that is secured to the door.
Iis a knob secured to the spring to facilitate the pressing of the spring from the screw H when it is desired to open the door. The spring engages with the screw H, when the door is closed, without any manipulation of the spring.
The spring may be used on window-blinds by securing the spring to the window-sill and having a screw in the blind, and it may also be used to hold doors open by fastening it to the floor and having the screw fastened to the door, so that it will en gage with the hook when the door is opened.
Having thus fully described my invention. what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The flat spring-catch 0, provided with the hole D, slat E, and hook G, in combination with the screws 12 and F and H, and with or without the knob I, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM M. CHANGE.
