FURNACE.
SPECIFIGATION fOrmingpart of Letters Patent No. 239,022, dated March 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED BERNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will- 1 2o escaping out of the stack, and at the same time to provide convenient means for clearing the grates from clinkers and ashes while in operation. It is especially adapted for using bituminous coal, which, as is well known, forms 2 and leaves a large amount of clinkers and ashes, which can be quicklyremoved by my improvement.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a vertical section of part of a boiler, showing a double set of grates with my improvements. Fig. II is a top view of the upper grates with the movable bars closed. Fig. III is a similar view with the movable bars open. Fig. IV is aview of the plate for holding one end of the grate-bars. Fig. V is a view of the plate for holding the other end of the grate-bars. Fig. VI is a cross-section of these bars on an enlarged scale. Fig.VII is a section of my non-combustible bars.
In the drawings, A represents the furnace, having two sets of grates, B C. The upper set, B, is shown hollow and perforatedfor the admission of air, to be forced in by steam-jets from pipe at, having a valve, 01., and leading from the boiler. In the center of the grate B two or more of the bars D are made movable, so that they can be moved apart, and the clinkers can be allowed to drop onto the lower grate, G, where they assist in the combustion with holes 0 and the other with notches or recesses f, so that they can be lifted out of the plates.
I'prefer to use non-combustible grates, as
shown in Fig. Vll, for the movable bars. They are constructed of an inner and outer tube, 6
G H, the space between which and the interior of the inner one being filled or packed with any suitable non-combustible material, such as asbestus, ground burned fire-brick, &c. By this means theinner bar adds greatly to the strength and rigidity of the bar, it being always cool. Instead of the inner tube a solid bar may be used.
The plates or supporting-bars E and F may be arranged in the central part of the furnace 7 5 only, or may extend from side to side of' the furnace, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. II, and all the bars made movable, instead of some fixed bars.
Having thus described my invention, what So I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Batent--is 1 In a furnace, the laterally-movable bars supported on suitable plates secured to the rear and front ends, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a furnace, the non-combustible bars consisting of an inner and outer tube with the spaces packed with non-combustible material, as specified. o
3. In a furnace, the hollow perforated laterally-movable bars B, in connection with a steam and air jet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a furnace, the hollow perforated mov- 5 able bars B, in connection with a steam and air jet,-in combination with a lower set of bars, 0, substantially as specified.
