SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,021, dated March 22, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED BERNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, 111 the county of Suffolk and State of Mas- 5 sachusetts, have invented certain newanduseful Improvements in Grate-Bars; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,

referen cebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in grate-bars for furnaces, which are to be shaken by levers or gearing; and the object is to facilitate the shaking and dumping of the gratebars, as well as to preserve them as much as possible, while at the same time giving ample facilities for the introduction of air.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts so that the bars will hold the fine coal when using upper and lower sets of bars, which coal generally, when shaken, falls upon the lower set, leaving the good coal to burn more freely, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a cross-section of a furnace with my grate-bars in position. Fig. 2 is a side view of part of my grate bar. Fig. 3 is a section on line as .12. Figs. 4 and 5 are sim- 5 ilar views of a modification.

In the drawings,A represents part of a furnace or fire-box in which are arranged the grate-bars B of the following description: The web or main part b of the bar may be 0 square, flat, V-shaped, or of any other'crosssection, and is provided with anumber of U- shaped or crescent-shaped sections, 0, with their ends pointing upward, and upon the sides of these sections are cast small studs or pro 5 jections, d,by which they are kept apart. the proper distance at their upper ends. These bars may be cast in one piece, or in sections, if desired.

As a modification of the bars the sectionsc may be cast with an eye, 0, (best seen in Fig. 5,) with a projecting hub, f, and strung upon a bar, C, of wrought or cast iron, so as to form, when together, the complete bar, as shown in Fig. 4, and by this means any of the sections that have been burned or broken can be readily 5 5 removed and replaced by new ones.

The ends of the web or bar may be provided with a square end, upon which the operating levers or wheels are placed, and the bars can thus be easily manipulated or dumped.

By arranging the sections in the manner shown the fine coal, ashes, and clinkers, dropping from an upper grate, when used, are better retained, While at the same time the space between the sections allows the air to pass 6 freely up between them, and also aids in the more perfect combustion of the coal upon the upper grate.

I am aware that bars of a similar shape, but inverted, have been used; also, that sections have been strung upon a bar; also, that fiat dumping-bars of different styles have been used; but with these a large amount of good coal or coke has been wasted by being dumped into the ash-pan, and I do not claim such; but,

Having described my in vention ,what I claim,

and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. A grate-bar composed of a central web or bar having U or crescent shaped sections with their ends turned upward, substantially as'shown and described.

2. A grate-bar composed of a central web or bar having U or crescent shaped sections with their ends turned upward, and provided 8 5 with distance projections, substantially as shown, and for the purposespecified.
