G. ROPER DIE ySTOCK Filed March 13, 1944 Patented Nov. 6, 1945 IlJNiTlaio' STATE s PATENT OFFICE assazem` Y DIESTOCK Y George Roper, Washington,` D. C. Application March '13, 1944, SerialkNo. 526,249
` r (c1. 1o-123) i y,
1 a die of large outside diameter? received in the 3' Claims.
This invention relates-to a die stock particularly adapted for threading dies.
Its object is to provide a single die stock' which will iit dies of different outside diameter.
While dies of practically all `makes are standardized as to outside diameter, there may be one size of outside diameter for dies of a certain range of threading capacity, and another size of outside diameter for another range of capacity. Moreover, there are frequently two outside diameters for dies of the same cutting capacity.
At the present time, when tools are scarce, it is v frequently difficult to obtain a replacement die having the same outside diameter as the one replaced. This makes it necessary to provide an additional die stock to carry the replacement die.
The'subject invention simpliliesthe situation by providing a single die stock adapted to t dies of different outside diameters.
,Other objects of the invention will appear as the following `description of a preferred and practical embodiment thereof proceeds.
In the drawing'which' accompanies and forms a part of the following specification, and throughout the several figures of which the same reference characters have been used to denote identical parts: i
Figure 1 is a plan View of a die stock embody- A ing the features of the invention, th'e outer portions of the handles being omitted;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical diametrical section taken seated upon the lip 4 and itself having a socket .i 6 with a peripheral underlying lip 1, and an adapter 8 fitting the socket of the adapter 5, seated upon the lip 1 and itself being provided with a socket 9 having the peripheral underlying lip I0. The sockets are all coaxial and the upper and lower faces of all of the underlying lips as well as the opposite faces I I and I2 of the body I, lie in planes perpendicular to the common axis of the sockets.
With all of the adapters in place, as shown, the die stock will take a die I1 of small outside diameter, received in the socket 9. With the adapter 8 removed, it will take a die of intermediate outside diameter received in the socket 6 and with both adapters removed, it will take socket 3. The Aselection of two adapters, as shown, rather than more or less than two, is purely arbitrary.
Substantially all dies are standardized to the extent that fora given outside diameter all'have the same thickness, also th'e thickness is proper; tional to th'e 'outside diameterso that dies of smaller outside diameter are less thick than those of larger outsidediameter. These factors are of important consideration in the design and construction of the subject die stock. The body I is provided at quadrantly spacedy intervals with radial threaded `bores I3 receiv ing the set screws I4. The axes of the set screws i are in a common plane perpendicular to the axisr of rotation ofthe die stock and spaced from theV plane of the upper face of the lip 4 a distance equal to one half the thickness of the die which fits the socket 3. Since all dies are provided with external diametricallyopposite h'olding pits equi-f distant from the opposite faces of the die, for receiving the ends of the set screws, a die se-` cured in the socket 3 is reversible, for whichever side of the die is against the lip 4, the pits will be coaxial with the set screws. I
'Ihe adapters are provided with' `quadrantly spaced bores I5 and I6, which may be unthreaded, and which are adapted to be brought into alignment for the passage of set screws, and the 5f: axes of which bores are in the plane of the axes of the set screws when the adapters are in place.
Since the die which fits the socket 6 is of less' thickness than the die which fits the socket 3, its o lower face will lie in a plane above the plane of Ti the upper face of the lip 4 when the die is supported with its holding pits coaxial with the set screws I4. Thedistance apart of these planes is the thickness of the lip l. `The rule is, therefore, th'at the thickness of the lip of each adapter Il is one half the differencebetween the thicknesses of dies whose outside diameters are respectively the diameter of the socket of the adapter and the outside diameter of the adapter.
The purpose of the lips is to provide a support for the inserted adapter or die so that it is automatically stopped in a position in which the axes of the set screw bores in the adapters and/or the holding pits of the die are in the plane of the axes of the set screws, it being only necessary to orient the adapters and die to bring the bores and pits into circumferential registry with the set screws, whereupon the latter may be tightened against the die in the customary manner. Usually, only two opposite set screws enter Der face of the die flush with the upper face I' I2 of the body. Since the smaller dies will be of less thickness than the largest die, it is not necessary to make the adapters come iiush with the upper face of the body I, as` shown. They It is. customary to present the lower face Il of the, die stock to the work.' However, the lower face oi the Vdie' is more d'eeply'in-setj` with respect to the body l than the upper face, on account of the thickness of the lip 4, in threading close to the head of a bolt, Afor example,V the upper Vface l2 ofthe body!! is presented to the work,` in which case, the die is reversed in the stock. Y
The upper and lower faces of the die stock are` preferably made plani'form throughout, so thaty they serve as efcient eye gauges in determining the` perpendicularity of the die stock with respect to the` bolt or rod being operated upon. v
l While I haveY in the above description disclosed what I believe toy be a preferred and.v practical embodiment of the invention, it will be. under'- stood to.V thoseskilled in the art that the specic detailsA of construction and arrangement of parts,V
as. shown and described,l are by vway ci illustration and not to be. constructed as limiting the' scope of the. appended claims. c
