2 Claims; (Cl. 266-41) The invention relates to a tuyere construction of the kind adaptable for use in regulatingthe amount of air admitted to the fire zone of a gas producer apparatus.
The tuyre construction of the invention has been found particularly useful in connection with a'gas producer apparatus of the type which is shown in Letters Patent No.,2,278,7i98, issuedApril 7, 1942, to A. Riccardi, and which apparatus is used to. generate and, supply a combustible gas to the internalcombustion enginevof an automotive vehicle. In such an apparatus, the tuyre which is ordinarily used is cast in one piece from a nickel chrome alloy which is resistant todestruction at high temperatures and is installedion the apparatus so that theftip: portion thereof pro J'ects into the fire zoneof the apparatus. The high temperature present in this fire zone, which usually reaches a temperature as high as. 2750 F.,. effects a rapid oxidation of the tip portion of the tuyere and in due time the length of said tip portion becomesso short that the entire tuyere becomes useless and has to be discarded and an entire new tuyre substituted.
It is the main object of the present invention to improve upon the construction of tuyeres used in such an apparatus as well as upon the construction of tuyres generally, and to provide a tuyre in which the tip portion thereof is made so that it is removable from the body portion of the tuyere and so that when the tip becomes unusable due to the action of the heat it is subjected to in the fire zone of the apparatus, it can be removed from the body portion and a new tip installed without the necessity of discarding the entire tuyre.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tuyere construction wherein the body portion thereof which is not subjected to the heat of the fire zone of the gas producer apparatus is made of a comparatively inexpensive metal and the removable tip portion which projects into the fire zone is made of a material which isespecially adapted to resist high heat temperatures.

Referring more particularly to the drawing it will be seen from the several views thereof that the tuyere construction is composed of three separate elements, namely, a body portion indicated generally by the letter A; a tip portion, indicated by the letter B; and a retaining collar designated by the letter C. These three elements when assembled together as shown in Figure 1, comprise a somewhat conical shaped tuyre or nozzle having a central opening therethrough which is indicated at D.
The body portion A, comprises a hollow cylindrical body and is intended to be made of a semisteel metal or of any other suitable inexpensive metalv The lower end of the conical shaped opening extending through the body portion is of a diameter which will coincide with and register with the diameter of the opening which is formed 1 through the tip portion B when the said tip is in assembled relation with respect to the body portion. The body portion has its upper free end formed with a flanged portion I which is adapted to be connected in any suitable manner to an air supply source. The exterior circumference of the body portion is formed with a reduced portion 2 which terminates at its lower end in a horizontally extending bottom 3, which at its inner end has a downwardly extending inclined face 4. The body portion also is provided with a screw threaded opening therein which is adapted to receive the collar retaining screw 5 therein, as will be more fully referred to hereinafter,
The tip portion B, of the construction, is intended to be made of a suitable refractory material which is resistant to destruction by heat such be replaced it can be readily taken from the assembly and a new tip substituted therefor. Secondly, by making the body portion and collar of a cheaper metal the cost of manufacture of the tuyere is greatly decreased. Also, by providing a removable tip to the tuyre construction it is possible to use tips made of different heat resistbottom'face portion 3 and inclined face 4 of the 7 lower end of the body portion A when said body portion and tip portion are in assembl'ed'relation with respect to each other. The exterior circumference of the enlarged head of the tip is formed I with an inclined portion 8 which extends between the head and the main body portion thereof indicated at 9.
The retaining collar C of the tuyre construction is made of steel tubing and has its interior circumference formed with an inclined face 16. The collar is also provided with a screw threaded openingtherethrough indicated at ll in Figure 1 and which opening coincides with the opening formed in the body portion A when the collar is in assembled relation with said body portion and the tip portion and said collar is held in position with respect to said body portion and tip portion by means of the screw 5. When the collar is in respect to the body portion and the tip as shown in Figure 1, it surrounds the lower end of the body portion and the head of the tip, and its interior surface abuts against the surfaces 2, 8 and 8, of the body portion and the tip, and when it is screwed in place by the screw 5, it clamps the body portion and tip portion securely together. V
It will be seen from the above description and by reference to the drawing that we have provided a tuyre construction which has several advantages. In the first place, it is comprised of three independent and separable parts which can be disassembled so that if the tip portion needs to ing materials and especially tips made of refractory materials'which do not wear out or oxidize as easily as tips made of other heat'resisting materials. In addition to the above advantages, the
operator of a gas producer apparatus when utilizing such a tuyere construction can keep on hand an extra supply of tips for use and can substitute the same in the tuyre without having to install an entirely complete tuyere when a tip becomes worn out.
While we have described the tuyre construction' of our invention as adaptable for use in a gas producer apparatus of the type shown in the aforesaid LettersPatent No. 2,278,798 it is obvious that it may be used in connection with any apparatus where air is introduced into a fire combustion zone. We therefore do not desire to be restricted to the use of the tuyre construction in connection with any particular type of gas producer apparatus.
What is claimed is:
1. A tuyre construction comprising a body portion made of a semi-steel, and a removable tip portion made of material resistant to destruction by heat, and a metallic collar secured around the body portion and the tip portion for holding said tip portion in position with respect to the body portion. A tuyre construction comprising a body portion made of a metallic material, and a separable tip portion made of an alloyresistant to destruction by high temperature, and a metallic collar means surrounding the outer end of the body portion and the inner end of the tipportion to hold said tip portion to the body portion.
