BARREL-HEAD FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,790, dated March 15, 1881.

Application filed February 13, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STORY B. LADD, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenin gs for Barrel-Heads and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of the present invention is to furnish a simple, cheap, and effective fastening device for barrel-heads, which can be easily inserted between the barrel-body and the head for the purpose of firmly securing the latter. and which can be removed without requiring the hoops to be loosened.

In the drawings, Figures 1 to 5, inclusive, illustrate different forms of the fastening. Fig. 6 is a vertical section illustrating the manner of inserting the head and applying the fastening shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a vertical section showing a barrel-head closed and secured by the fastening illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a barrel-head closed and fastened by the device shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 9 is a vertical section showing the manner of applying the fastening shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 10 is a perspective view illustrating the fastening shown in Fig. 2 closed down upon the barrel-head.

A A are the side segments of an ordinary barrel-head, and B B are the halves of the middle straight section.

0 is the cleat nailed or fastened to the section. B, and made so as to reach almost to the outer end of the section B. In Fig. 7'the oint between the sections B B is beveled so I 7 that the sections may mutually support each other, or it may be arabbet-joint for the same purpose, previously stated. In Fig. 6 the joint between the sections B B is shown as a square butt-joint, and the joints between the sections B B and A A is rabbeted.

The fastening may be made of either wire or sheet metal. The lower part, D, of the fastening is bent so as to form a shoulder, which projects under the part B of the barrelhead.

E is the arm or prong which is bent down over the cleat 0, and there may be but one prong, or two, as shown in Fig. 4.

The hook F is for the purpose of suspending the fastening from the chine of the barrel while the head is being inserted, and it also holds the shoulder D against the under side of the head while the arm E is being hammered down. In the form of a double fastening shown by Fig. 2 the hook F is also a prong, and after the prong E is bent down the hook F is bent over also.

The form of fastening shown by Fig. 5 is not intended to be hung from the chine of the barrel, but it is attached to the edge of the section B of the barrel-head by slipping the edge of the head between the shoulder D and the point F, or by jamming the point F into the edge of the head, while the extension G bears against the side of the barrel below the head and holds the shoulder D up against the under side of the head.

The fastenings fashioned from sheet metal are preferably made so that the shank will present its edge to the end of the barrel-head, and it is crowded into the head when the head is closed; but they can be made with 'the side toward the head, and it will then be pressed into the groove when the head is closed. The wire fastening can have the shank at the point where it comes opposite the head flattened, with a knife-edge toward the head, for the same purpose.

To open the head the prongs E are first pried up, then the cleat O is raised, and the sections of the head are easily removed.

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as my own, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A barrel-head fastening having a bottom shoulder, a support for holding said fastening while the head is being inserted, and one or more prongs capable of being bent over or driven into the top of a barrel-head, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a barrel and barrel-head, of a fastening device having a prong or shoulder which engages with the barrelhead, and one or more prongs or spurs extending above the head and capable of being bent over or driven into the top of said head, substantially as set forth.
