D. KEETHLER.
came Car. No. 238,786. Patented March 15,1881.
NJE ERS, PHOTO-LIYNOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL KEETHLER, OF MOUNT ORAB, OHIO.
CATTLE-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,786, dated March 15, 1881.
Application filed December 17, 1880.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL KEETHLER, a citizen of theUnited States, residingatMount Orab, in the county of Brown and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Oars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in cattle-cars; and it consists in constructing the same with removable partitions that separate one stall from the other,'whereby the same (the partitions) may be removed and the car converted into a freight-car, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my improved stoclrcar, taken through line 2 2, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal sectional view of the same, taken through line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a side view of one end of the car, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
The letter A designates the car, constructed with slatted sidesct and ends a, and having the usual roof a and door a Said car has openings or doorways I) b b b, two on each side and near the endsof the car A,which are provided with sliding doors I) b b b; and near or at the center, and on both sides of said car are similar doorways b 11 having also sliding doors 1) b through which stock may enter and leave the car, as well as through the doors I) b b b.
B designates the partitions that separate the stalls o 0 c c a a, which are, removably applied to the car A by means of the projections ccon the posts 0 resting within mortises 0 0 made in the floor a and the upper portion thereof resting in slots or mortises d d, made in the cross-beams d d of the car-roofed. Said (No model.)
partitions are cut away at 61 01 and are provided with vertically-beveled edges 61 (1 that enter vertical grooves e 0, made on the front of the troughs O.
D designates narrow passages formed between the troughs O, and running from side to side of the car. The ends or openings c e are provided with hinged doors 6 6 opening outwardly. Said passages D are formed not only by the back of the troughs C, but by cross-slats e 0 extending from side to side of the car aforesaid.
It will be observed by referring to the drawings that the partitions B B, which separate one stall from the other, run lengthwise and parallel with the sides of the car A, while the troughs O at the head of each stall run cross' wise the same, and, with the slats e 6 form three compartments, fff, in said car, while the spaces between said troughs and slats e i form the passage-ways D D, by means of which the troughs on either side thereot can be conveniently reached and the stock watered and fed without the attendant going in the rear of or in the stalls with the stock. The latter may be fastened in the stalls by any well-known means. Furthermore it will be seen that the partitions B B, being removable, they can be taken out and the car may be converted into a freight-car.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a stock-car, the removable partition B, constructed with projections 0, adapted to the mortises 0 made in the floor a the beveled edges d, that enter the grooves e in the troughs (l, and the upper portion of the post 0 resting within the slots d in the roof a whereby the partition is secured in position, as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL KEETHLER.
