STEAM-SU PPLY SYSTEM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,778, dated March 15, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. HAXTEEN, ofKewanee, county ot'Henry, btate oflllinois, and MARK S. FooTE, of Burlington, county of Des Moines, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Supply Systems; and we declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains 'to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention consists in providing a steamsupply system with heating-boilers located at points distant from the principal generator on the line of the mains, the construction being such that the steam or condense-water within the main will, upon arriving at the boiler or heater, enter a steam-space between the inner and outer walls of the said furnace and be there reheated, and the condense-water reconverted into steam, as will be hereinafter more particularly specified, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure I is a sectional view of an apparatus illustrating the principles of our invention. Fig. 2 is a variation of theinvention.
o Heretot'ore in steam-heating systems great difficulty has been experienced by the rapid cooling of the steam and by the accumulation of condense-water in the mains, and to overcome the last difficulty traps of various kinds 5 have been resorted to for drawing offcondensewaterat depressed points in the main, or else the steam -pipes have been so located that condense-water would run back tolthe principal generator; but in both these systems the 40 condensation is so rapid that the system of mains em anati ngfrom the main generator have necessarily been restricted to a very small territory.
We propose to overcome these difficulties by 5 locating secondary heaters at suitable intervals, the said heaters being in the nature of boilers having a steam jacket or space between the outer shell and the inner furnace-space, the outer and inner walls being, like a boiler,
capable of withstanding the pressure of the steam in the mains. so that the steam-spaces of these secondary heaters will form a part of the main at this point, the steam entering at one level and leaving the steam-space of the secondary heater at a higheror lower level, by 5 5 which construction a large heating-surface is presented and a considerable water-space is provided, which may accumulate more or less water without interrupting in any degree the free flow of the steam.

This secondary generator or reheater is provided with an inner shell, B, which separates it from the furnace-space, and an outer shell, B so that the steam passingfrom the main A enters directly the steam-jacket O, and is there reheated and passes on through the continuation A of the main in as fresh condition as when it left the main generator; so, also, any water of condensation which shall have collected at this point is regenerated into steam. There may be one or more of these secondary boilers or heaters, as may be required, and it is apparent that by this means, with a single principal generator and several secondary generators, the steam may be carried over a large territory without losing its effectiveness; so, also, it is apparent that the condense-water in the mains is already at a high t mperature as long as there is steam in the mains, and that a very moderate degree of heat at the secondary heaters will serve to reconvert that condense-water into steam, thus etiecting a great saving in fuel, which would otherwise have to be consumed in heating cold water, which would have to be introduced into the principal generator to supply the loss by condensation. 0 This may be efi'ected either by applying the heat at secondary furnaces directly to the main itself, which forms the subject-matter of another application filed by us, or, as in this instance, it may be accomplished by causing the 5 mains to empty into and lead from the steamspace of a secondary boiler, the former case dispensing with the necessity of a furnace which should resist the steam-pressure, while that element of strength would be required in the latter case.
Instead of having the main enter the boiler directly, the main may pass and be tapped at the location of the boiler, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to lead the condense-water to the boiler, reconvert it into steam, and lead it off again into the main.
We are aware that it is not new to employ superheated steam to heat air for heating and cooking purposes; further, that it is old to employ a secondary heater for heating air 5 further, that it is old to heat water by eausin g it to flow into the lower portion of a heatingchamber and escape from the upper portion thereof; further, that it is old to reheat exhaust-steam for heating purposes, and hence we would have it understood that we make no claim to such subjects-matter.
Again, we make no claim in this patent to the combination, with the main of a steam- 1 supply system, of a secondary heater, the main extending through said heater, as such subject-matter is shown, described, and claimed in another patent granted to us, the application for which was filed of even date with this.
hat we claim is- The combination, with the main pipe of a system of steam-supply, of one or more secondary boilers, each having a steam-space of larger dimensions than the conducting-pipes, and located in the line of main pipe, the latter communicating with the steam-space of the secondary boiler or boilers in diiferent vertical l planes, substantially as set forth.

Correction in l Affidavits having been filed showing that the name of one of the patentees of Le Patent No. 238,778, granted March 15, 1881, for an improvement in Steam Su System is, and should havebeen printed, William E. Haxtun instead of Wii E. Haxteen and that the original Letters Patent have been lost, and therefore ca be returned to the Patent Office for proper correction. I hereby append a certit of correction to a certified copy of said Letters Patent that said original Letters Pa should have been issued to William E. Haxtun and Mark S. Foote, patentees, and the records of the Patent Off ce have been changed accordingly.
