Description

V. F. EVERY WELL SCREEN Oct; 30, 1945.
Filed Jan. 28, 1944 INVENTOR V/ee/L E EVE/2) BY M kw" ATTORNEYS Patent ed Oct. 30, 1945 TED PATENT GF-FJCE -WEI1L SCREEN vir 'ilrfinverm Rochelle Park, N. J. Application sanitary 2s, 1944,-SerialNo.'52 0,'0 14 solaiins. (01.1664) This invention relat'esto well-screens and the same has particular'i eferenc'eto'an improved well screen-composed 'of parts adapted 'to interfit for "retaining the same in assembled relationand Which may 'be expeditiously assembled "and installed vand"disassmb1ed when required for feplacing worn' ordamaged parts 'and' the invention is "an improvement 011 Letters Patent No. 2,101,537 issued December 7, 1937. o
The invention lhas in view a we11'scren adapted "to be constructedin various lengths which ma rings or hands disposed intermediate the ends thereof'arid'which obviaitesthe necessity ofwlding or epeaning "the bars "and bands for securing the same :in ajssembl'ed relation.
With the foregoing and 'othe'r dbjects i'n viw, reference is now "made 'to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred 'embo'dimeritfof the "inventio'n.
In the drawirrg:
Fig. lfiS *a'side view of awell screen constructed in accordance Withthe i'nvritibh and I illu$traffirig the same partly in section so'as -to discldse the underlying structure.
'Fig. 2 "is a transverse "Sectional View ltakn approximately on the line 2- 2 of Figure 'Fig. "3 Li's a fra'gmentary perspe'ctive 'view illustrating "the retaining "ring assembled with the screen bars. i i
Fig. "4 is'afragmentary'perspective vie'w' of one 'of theretaining rings.
:Fig. *5 is 'a fragmentary perspective view of one-lend of-one of the sc'reenrbajrs.
:Figufi is a'frag'r'nentary perspective view of a section of one of'the "screen 5 bars illustrating the notched portion for receiving 'the retaining ding.
"Referring :to the drawing by' characters? of reference, the well screen includesvoppositely 1 disposed tubularendrmembers l D and zl I a'ea'c'h formed with ia-peripheral groove i H in its outer rface disv ing inwardly converging opposite 'side faces 15 so as to provide "inwardly 'fiaringor diver gi'n'g water pasSagesI-B betweehadjaent bars.
The'bar's Mare formedwith'notches I?! in their inner edges which are disposed adjacent 'to their opposite ends respectively and'of a width to snugly receive therein the annular heads 3 or the endmembers 1'0 and H 'with'the ends of the'bars arranged externally of "the inner end portions of said end membersand withvthe extremities lc8'of saidbars which lie between the notches "l1 and the ends of said bars being disposed in s'aid' pripheral grooves l2. of said bars are externally rabbeted'as at l9 thereby forming the s'ho'uldersi-flwhich" are spaced from thenotches l1 respectively; iCollars'zZl are provided for each'end member I0 and III FWhi'Ch slidably fit thereupon andare adapted "toenga'ge in said notches "I 9 and. to i'abut 'a'gainst said; shoulders 2'0 so'as'to'overlieiaportion 'of the extremities l8 of the'ba'rs M 'to therehyretain tliefbars l4 and the endinembers'tfland 'l'l i n interfitting notched're'lation. v l
'The collars 21 are formed with 'chamfers 22 at the juncture of their inner endsand 'i'nner peripheriesso that the s'ar'n'esnugly eng'age against 'the shoulders 20 respectively. A coupling member 23 is provided foreach end 'memben'lfl and H which coupling membe'rs are internally threaded throughourttheir'extent and are adapted to threadedly engage over the threaded =out'r ends of the end members 10 "and 'H and tobe tightened against the outer "end edges of the collars 2! for retaining'the collars inpos'ition-lon the end members and said couplin members 23 providing means for lth'read'edly coupling the well screen at its opposite ends ina pipeline.
In order to reinforce the ba rs [4 intermediate the end members 10 and H and to retain the same in circumferentially spaced relation, one or more bands 24 are provided which fit in transverse notches "26 opening throughtheinner edges 21 of the bars l4 at l'on'gitudinally spaced intervals to thereby dispose the inner faces of the bands 24 flushwith theinn'er edges of the bars. One end wall 28 of each ofthe nQtchesZB is disposed in substantially right angular relation withthe plane of theinner edgesllfof the bars M while the opposite end wall 29 of each of the notches is disposed at substantially f30 degrees to the plane of the 'bottom wall of th'e notches. The opposit'eannular end walls "3! and 32 of each of the bands 24 are shaped to conform with the end Walls 28 and 29 of the notches 26 so as to snugly interfit therewith and retain The extremities '18 at ea'ch'end i the bands and the bars in assembled relation since the undercut formation of the end wall 29 of the notches 26 necessitates the bowing of the bars M in order to spring the same into engagement with the bands. The bands are provided with radially disposed outwardly projecting ribs 33 having outwardly converging opposite side faces 34 conforming to the inwardly convergingside faces I of the bars l4 so that the ribs interfit between the bars andspace the same in said circumferential relation. The ribs 33 extend the full width of the bands 24 and are of lesser depth than the thickness of the bars I4 so that the outer faces of the ribs are recessed inwardly of the outer faces of the bars.
