Still another object is to provide an improved bitholder comprising a pair of cooperating Ahinged holder parts. A further object is to e provide an'improved cutter bit holder which is simple Vin design and rugged in construction.
showing another modified form 'of the invention. Fig. 9 is a sectional view, similar to Fig. 3,
showing still another modified form of the inl socket is preferably generally rectangular in cross section 'and at its inner end opens into a, transverse opening d. .'The chain block is threaded at" 5 for thev reception of a standard set screw 6.'
The improved Vbit holder, in the embodiment of the invention'shown in Figs. 1 to 6, inclusive,
Other objects and advantages of the invention will, however, hereinafter more fully `appear in the course of the ensuing description.
In the accompanying drawing there are shown for purposes of illustration several forms which the invention may assume in practice.
In this drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a cutter chain with which an illustrative embodiment of the invention is associated.
Fig. 2 is across sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view in central longitudinal section ltaken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the improved bit holder.
Fig. 7 is' a sectional view, similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of the invention.
'Fig'. 8 is a sectional view, similar to Fig. 3,
is generally designated l and has a head 8 and an integral `shank 9, the latter being of rectangular cross4 section for reception in the chain block socket 3. Extending .obliquely through the holder headvis a socket l0, herein vpreferably of polygonal 'cross' section, adapted-to receive a cut'- ter bit, generally designated! I, of a convention-l al design. 'l Secured within the holderfhe'ad and traversing' the bit-re'ceiving'sooket is a hardened metal cross ypin l2, and `pivotally mounted on projecting ends yoi this pin are the side arms I3 ofy a front h'older'par't l4,'hereinin the form of a bit clamp, Aand thefsides of the holder. head are preferably cut away at l5 to receive the side arms i3, in themanner shown. The ends of the cross pin are preferably'headed or peene'd. over to retainth'e side arms of the hinged front holder partin position thereon. l
The' cutter bit lhshownmost clearly in Figs. 3 andY 4, may be of, the same general type as that 'shown .inthe'patent to Ross 2,020,215, although the bit shaDL may assumevarious conventional forms'without departing from the spirit of the invention. A'Ifhecutter bit disclosed herein isof triangularpsliape iniside elevation and of Vpolygona'l' cross section and'has plane cuttingfaces I6, t6' formed, so tO speak, one at each'of the equal sidesof the triangle; andthe cutting faces, at lthe, extremities of the `cutter bit, -t'err'ninate in cutting points l1, l1. ",Ihe plane cutting faces I6, IB A.are 4of elongated diamond shapeand are individually symmetrical as to, both major and minor axial lines. This cutter bit is. of the'gsocalled .throw-away type Jand, when yboth cuttingpcints become dull, may be discarded due to its extremely inespensive design.
The cutter bit is insertible in the socket I f the holder head with its inner, inactive cutting face resting against the cross pin I2. The cross pin therefore serves two purposes in that it acts both as an abutment for the cutter bit and a pivot for the front holder part I4. The pivoted front holder part I4 has a surface I8 engageable with the inner portion of the active cutting face of the cutterbitiand a surface I9 ,engageablewith the exteriorsurface of the chain block outside' of the block socket.
When the holder shank 9 is inserted in th'echain block socket 3, the surface I9 of the hinged front holder part I4 engages the exterior block surface 2D, so that upon further insertive movement 0f the holder shank in the block socket, the
surface I8 of the front holder part engages the inner portion of the active front cutting face of the cutter bit to hold the latter in cutting position in the holder head socket with its inner, inactive cutting face ,resting firmly against 4the cosslpi I2. Thesetscrew 6 is'then adjusted intoefr'lagelne'nt'with' the holder shank for firmly securing theY holder in position onA the chain block. It is accordingly evident that the hinged front holder part I4 is swingable outwardly into engagementwith the front 'cutting face of the bit to' prevent exit ofthe cutter'bit from the holder head socket, and is swingable inwardly out of engagement with the cutter bit to permit for- Wardendwise release ofthe bit from the holder headsocket. Y
The several modified embodiments of the invention 'shown in Figs. '7; 8r and 9 are broadly similarto that described above; In these embodiments, however, the 'set screw opening 2l in the chain block22 vis' inclined with respect to the path'oftravel'of the cutter chain to enable the inner endof Vthe set Vscrew to engage an'inclined surface 23.v on a, holder Vshank 24 so that when the setjvjscrew .'is tightened Vthe holder. sh'ank will Vbe forcedl nwardlywithin the holder block socket. In Fig. 7 "a holderfhead 25 has a front'rcess 26 foi-'receiving a' cutter bit, generally designated 21.` This cutter'bit iso'f trape'zoidal shape in side elevationfand' has cutting ' points 28, 28 at its opi posite end'sf,',thesepoints being formed 'atth'e'e'xtremitiesicfe. front plane, cutting' face 29,. The pivot :pin for'. a front holder part 3l, in this instance,' does not' Vserve as a bit abutment, and
an abutmentsurface'32 on'the holder head. The'V pivot pin -3Ilis' secured within the holder h'ead. and is spaced vrearwardly from` the Vfront bitabutment surface 32 in the' manner shown. The Y hingedfront holder part 3l, asin the form of the invention above described, serves as a bit clamp and has a surface 3.3 engageable-with the frontjbitface Y29 'and a 'surface v34 Vengageable with the exterior of theichain block. When the set screwisitightened., theholder shank isforced inwardlywithin th'e chain block socket and the pivoted front holder part, due to its engagement with the exterior surfaceofthe chain block, engages the cutter ibit to clampthecutter bit firmly against release from 'the holderhead recess. In Fig. 8 thefcutter bit, generally. designated 35, is crescent shaped and h'as acurved rear surface 36 and a plane 'front cutting face 31, the latter terminating at the opposite extremities of thebit in cutting points 38, V 3,8. The forwardcutting face 31 of A,thebit is" notched atV 39 midway lbetween thecutting points, and the pivoted front holder part 40,'which is pivoted. on a cross pin'4I secured Within the'gholder head 42, hase. portion the' inner, ,inactive 'end'ofthe 'cutter bit 'engages bit against endwise displacement from the holder. The rear curved surface of the cutter bit is seated within a recess 44 at the forward side of the holder head. When the set screw is tightened, the holder shank 42 is forced inwardly within the chain block socket and the pivoted front holder part, due to its engagement with the exteriorv surface of thechain block,v engages the cutter bit-Withits portion 43 received4 in the bit notch 39, so that the cutter bit is firmly held in cutting position within its recess 44 in the holder h'ead. In Fig. 9 a bit-receiving socket 45 extends obliquely completely through the holder head. 46, so that the rear, inactive cutting end of a cutter bit, generally designated 41, extends rearwardly through the socket into engagement with the exterior surface of the chain block at the rear side of the block socket. The cutter bit, in this'in'st'ance, is of trapezoidal shape in sideelevation ,and has relatively inclined plane cutting facesj48,`148, lying in the sides of a dihedral angleV and terminating in cuttingpoints 49, 49 at head socket, 'and the pivoted'. front holder part A 'iILwhich is hinged" at "5I on the' holder head,
has a surface 52'engag`e`able w'ith'the inner portion of the active cutting `face`of the bit, Yto prevent forward exit of the'bitffrom theY holder socket." "Thepivoted front clamp part has a surface 53 'engageable With the exterior surface of the chain' block at the forward side of the block '35,4 socket. 'The inner, inactive cutting facefof the V:cutter bit rests firmly against the exterior surface of thejchain block, and ,when the set screwis tightened the holders-'bank 54 isfocd inwardly within the block socketv and,'due to the engage- 4Qqm`ent ofthepivoted front holder part' with vthe exterior Ysurfac'ebf thechain block,"'the surface 52' on'the h'older part'en'gages Vthe inner portion of the active cutting face of the bit to clamp the cutter bit firmly in Ycutting position. As in Figs'.
* '7 and' 8, the 'cross pinjsecured within the holder "'headserves' only asa hinge pin. Alsoi'n" these threemodied embodiments, the set screw when tightenedjeflects automatic clamping 'of the cutterjbitrmly inrcutting position with.a`vise-like y action',V since `insertive movement Vof 4the holderl shank 'within the block socket automaticallyI effects' tightening Yof the front holder part; Otherwise the embodiments' 'of the/invention shown in Figs. 7, Sand 9 are similar to that shown in Figs. Ito 6, incusive.V
As a result; of VVtliiginvention, it will` be noted thatan improved kerf-cutting..cutter` chain is provided having improved cutter,- bit supporting and holding means for firmly ,sii-moorting' and holding aV cutter bit in cutting position` on a chain block. jfItwill further benoted that by the pro`r` vision of the'improvedcutter'bit holder embodying a hinged from;` holder part engageable with the exterior of the chain block wholly outside of therblocksocket, the cutter bit is firmly `clamped in cutting position on the block. It will further be noted that-in the several'jembodiments ofthe invention, .the cutter bit holderis of an extremely simpleV and inexpensive design `4andnlay be used in astandard chain block Other uses and' ad'-- vantages of the invention 'willberclearly appar-fv ent to those skilled in the art.
WhileA there arein this application specifically described'several f orrnsY which the invention may assumeinpractice, ity/illnbeunderstood that 43 receivable in the bit notch to hom the cutter assaggi;
