Description
v UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE W. SWIFT, OF OXFORll-MISSISSIPPI.
iMPROVEMENTv IN PORTABLE HORSE-POWERS.
To all whom it may concer-r1,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SWIFT, of Oxford,in the county of Lafayette and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful machine, being a Portable Horse-Power for Driving and Giving Speed to Thrashers and other Machinery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in Which- Figure l is abirds-eye View, and Fig. 2 an elevation.
Lever A has a mortise I, through which the anchor or perpendicular post G is inserted, the latter being rmly set in the ground and furnished with a shoulder one foot or more above the ground for the support of lever, as seen in the drawings. Roller B revolves on and supports-the opposite end from mortise of lever A. Band-Wheel F consists of a larger and smaller diameter and revolves on anchor G between lever A and the ground. The shaft C, attached to under side of lever A, is furnished at each end with idlers D and E. Cord or chain H connects with the smaller diameter of band-wheel F and also retained in groove on roller by means of idlers D andI E, idler D having a groove or fiange extending suiiciently over groove on roller B for cord H, after passing under idler D, to fall into groove on roller B, and idler E aiding in retaining it there until its passage under the latter idler to band-wheel. The larger diameter of band-wheel has connection with machinery by belts or cords passing just under the surface of the ground outside of circle formed by roller B from band-wheel F, as represented by cord K, it being partly covered, so as to admit of the passage of the power and roller.
To operate this machine the power is attached to end L of lever A and moved to the left hand, or direction indicated by arrows m, where by the rotation of roller B upon the ground around anchor G an accelerated Inotion is given to band-wheel F by cord or chain Set forth.
