This invent-ion.relates to pertain, improvements in the tipping gravity davits-tor lifeboats, as disclosed in United IStatesPaten-t Number 2,305,457, granted December15, 194 2..
One of the objects of thisiinvention -to:dis pense .with the guy. ropes :for. the auxiliary beam ofeach .oftthe davits, and to dispense; with the small. removable tackle serving to causetheinward tipping movement .of thebeam and davit..-
Another object .of .these improvements .isto provide a better support for the. auxiliary beams when the companion of .the (ship. is sufficiently nearthedevicea A further object of .the --,inv,ention..is toprovide a more suitable shape o f;. davit, said shapebeing such as .tocause .the boat, when fully withdrawn from the ships "side, to be kept in anupright position and not inclined.
In .--addition :to the -main- -objects as hereinbefore described, this invention provides a lighter davit device, both in the single boat types and in the types for two superposed boats.
In the annexed drawings:
Fig. 1 shows a side view of an adjusting screw system for controlling the auxiliary beam of each elementary davit;
Fig. 2 shows a front view of the system of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 shows a side view of a different shape of davit, as well as a different arrangement of the screw system;
Fig. 4 shows a side View of a davit formed by tubes located beyond the ends of the boat, instead of being placed laterally of the boat as shown in the previous figures;
Fig. 5 shows a front view of the arrangement of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 shows a side View of another embodiment, two boats being gravity operated;
Fig. 7 shows a front view of the arrangement of Fig. 6.
It will be understood that the kind, shape and arrangement of the parts which make up the devices according to the improvements herein disclosed may be largely varied, Without departing from the scope of the invention, provided that the essential features, as set forth in this specification, are not altered.
The first of the improvements consists in the auxiliary beam I, for each of the two davits 4 (Fig. 1), adjusted by the screw system 2 which is mounted on a trestle 3 on the deck l3 on which the beams I and davits 4 are pivoted on pivots 22. This screw system 2 serves both as a tension and compression member for the beams l, and
the position of the latter is controlled by screw.- m or u scr in uth ewemb ment shown in Fig-,1 .the normaltr-impf the davits tin which 47116 boat. 5 is. suspended and partially protrudes .iremthe ships side .6, is main.- tain' hen h sce i sully u s r w dth latte; on the contrary beingscrewed in rte-Eacempl js -thezin ea d t pin mo me t eam l and-davit (dotted lines). Thereverse: takes place in the embodiments-of Figs. .3 and; 6, .accordin t which bo im n s h ts e fully withdrawn from the ships side in their normal trim; -I n-. the.-latter instance, :the screw has to be unscrewed only when-the ship is unfavorably listed... The embodiment shown in :Fig, 6 :will bedealt with more particularly;hereinafter, -..It will vbe apparent,.,therefore, that-.thepse tot-fill cables ;forthe. aukiliany; beams I, as set forth ;in P t n ie-305 7. i no l n e quir dw e using the support screw system as hereinbefore disclosed, so that the first of the objects of the invention, as described in the introductory paragraphs of this specification, is fully achieved.
A further improvement according to this invention relates to the shape of the davit 4 (Fig. 3), which has been made sufficiently curved, so that the davit beam unit keeps bending inboard as in the withdrawn boat instance of Fig. l (dotted lines). It follows that the boat keeps upright and fully withdrawn from the ships side 6; the boat may be gravity tipped outboard when the vessel is on even keel, as gravity slightly prevails in this case, viz., by 5 degrees on the suspension point of the davit head with respect to the rotation axis of davit. Should the ship be unfavorably listed, it will be necessary to actuate the screw system 2.
From Fig. 3 it will also be seen that when a companion 1 is available, the trestle 3 of Fig. 1 may be dispensed with, and the companion 1 serves as a support for the screw system 2. Moreover, the operating crank of the screw system 2 may be controlled from the deck [3 through suitable transmission members.
A further improvement has been brought about by placing the two elementary davits 4 of the pair beyond the ends of the boat 5 (Figs. 4 and 5). In this case the davit 4 (Fig. 5) is formed by straight tubes which are preferably reduced at their end. As in the previousinstances, the beam I is still formed by tubes and is provided with an engagement bracket I9 to keep a proper inclination of davits with respect to the beam.
The davits according to the improvements are fitted with gravity saddles 26 (Fig. 4); Two of V such saddles are provided, to keep the boat 51 properly raised at its ends. Each of them comprises a saddle proper ZBand a forked foot 21 the two branches of which are integral with the saddle at the top and are pivotally connected to the deck l3 (Fig. 4) at their lower ends, while a second simple foot 28 (Fig. 4) which is pivoted under the saddle 26, rests on deck I3, where it is stopped by a stop 29. Both the forked and the simple foot are properly held apart'with respect to the vertical direction passing through the centre of the'saddle, so that on removing the stop 23 thesaddle will fall down on the deck I3 owing toits own weight and will leave the boat 5 free to accomplish its gravity-tipping movement.
Still another improvement according to this invention relates to the operation of two superi posed boats by means of davits formed by tubes of the kind just described. An embodiment of this improvement is shown in Figs. 6 and '7 and according to this embodiment both of the boats are ready to accomplish gravity outboard swinging movements"simultaneously; The lower boat 30 rests'on the. gravity saddles 26 already described, and the upper one 5' rests on the half saddles 3 I, which are supported by the lower boat 30 and are easily taken away on the fallingdown of the gravity ones. own tackle which serves to lower the'b'oats to Each boat is fitted with its 5 the sea successively, viz. the lower one 30 first, beams adjacent its top, and its other end mountand the upper one 5 lines) r In the arrangement shown afterwards (Fig. 6, dotted in Figs. 6 and '7, the davits 4 are provided at their bases with forks 4',
and the 'beams I at their bases with forks l,
the davits 4 and beams I lie in the same vertical plane. The screw system 2 mounted on the these forks 4 and I- being mounted on the horf iz'ontal pivot 22' so that the longitudinal axes of trestle 3 on the companion (Fig. 5) has one end of its rigid rod 2 pivoted on the beam I and its 7 other end pivoted on its support, the longitudinal axis of the rod 2' lying in the common plane of the longitudinal axes of the davits 4 and .Trod 20, fitted with a hand crank and supported by a trestle 2| provides for control system 2. V
The screw system 2, when arranged in front of of the screw the beam5, requires a forked support 25 (Figs.
4 and 5), between the two branches of which the davit 4 may swing.
' What'I claim is? In a tipping davit device for life boats, the combinationiof a pair of davits mounted on horizontal pivots on the deck of the ship, and spaced from each other along-the deck; a pair of beams mounted on horizontal pivots on the deck, the longitudinal axis of each beamflying in the vertical plane in which lies the longitudinal axis of one of said davits; a block and tackle connection between the upper end of each beam and the upper end of its associated davit; a pair of longitudinally adjustable, rigid rods, each having one end mounted on a horizontal pivot on one of the ed on a horizontal pivot on the deck, the longitudinal axes of the rods lying in the common planes of the axes of their respective beams and ANTQN'INO PAMPINELLA.
