This invention relates to a device for constricting and forming the upper portion or neck of a container made of moist paper pulp or like material.
The principal object of my invention is to pro vide a device that will form a neck by constricting the upper portion oi the upright wall of a paper container while it is still pliable and press or spin the material so constricted smooth and even. Another object is to provide mechanism that will rotate the container while it is being constricted, also the spinner itself, and its individual rolls, that smooth the interior of the container, all simultaneously.
Another object is to so construct said device that it is simple and economical to manufacture and operate.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings and changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosure; -but am enwithin In the drawings: I
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my device, the lower portion being shown in section with the constrictor beginning to be actuated to a position where it is ready to force the upper portion of the container inwardly and the spinner has moved downwardly into the container towards its functional position.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the constrictor and spinner in operative position where they are constricting the container upper portion and smoothing and shaping it at the same time.
Figure 3 is amenlarged sectional view of the spinner in operative position showing its shaft operatively engaged with a vertical rotatable shaft. Figure 4 is a similar view; but showing the spinner in operative position and its shaft disengaged from said rotatable shaft.

As illustrated. a driving gear i2 is driven by a rotatable shaft Hi from any common source of power not shown. A bevel gear ll is rotated by said gear l2 which in turn rotates a vertical, hollow shaft I6 splined to said gear I4. Said shaft l6 has a lower section 16a which is connected to said shaft I6 by screw threads IT.
A smaller, rotatable shaft l8, having a connecting tooth Ian at its lower end, extends through said hollow shaft l6, being rotated by a gear I! that is splined thereto.
A bevel gear 2fl drives said gear l9, both of which 'gears are supported in a bearing 2|. Said shaft [6 is movable upwardly and downwardly by means of an air cylinder head 22. so it can be engaged with or disengaged from a spinner S later described, after downward movement of shaft l6 moves said spinner into the container C.
fhe main supporting frame 24 for my device has an upper standard 25, vertical supporting standards 26 and an intermediate supporting standard 21. Stationary posts 29 are setin standards 2-5 and 21.
A movable slide 30 has a circular, upper sliding member 3i that is slidably mounted on said stationary posts 29 and embodies a loose bearing 3la through which the vertical shaft l6 slidably extends and is rotatable therein. Said slide 30 also has a lower slide member 32 that is like-- wise slidably mounted on said stationary posts 29 and it embodies a loose bearing 32a in which said shaft l6 slides and rotates. Vertical connecting rods 33 connect said slide members 3| and 32. y
Actuating rods 35 which move vertically are slidably mounted in said upper standard 25. These may be actuated by any commonly known means, not shown, and .they are fastened as at 36 to upper slide member 3| so that the slide 30 moves with them. Collars 38 are pinned to shaft l6 and rotate with it. They cause said shaft I6 to move vertically with said slide 30 since they are immediately above and below said bearing An actuating ring member 40 is fixedly attached to the lower slide member 32. It has push rods 4| pinned as at 42 to said slide member 32 and pinned as at 43 to lugs a on push ring 44. Two cam members 46 and two cam members 46a are fixed to ball-bearing, movable rods 41 and 41a respectively. The rods "a are slightly shorter than said rods 41, so in normal position they are spaced 9. little below said push ring 44.
Said cam members 46 have inclined cam surfaces 48 and said cam members 46a have inclined cam surfaces 48a that extend at a lesser angle to horizontal than said cam surfaces 48. Collar portions 48 and 48a respectively are a part of said cam members 48 and 48a. Said cam rods 41 and 41a are fixed to and, therefore, move with their cam members 48 and 48a, and are siidably mounted in a support 58 which has four spring bearing portions 5I against which coil springs 52 bear and they also bear against the lower ends of said collar portions 49 and 49a. Said springs 5| are coiled around said rods 41 and 41a, and they tend to force said cam members 48 and 48a upwardly to inoperative position since they exert pressure against collar portions 48 and 48a.
I provide a constrictor which has two lateral sliding portions 55, and two more 55a, which have inclined cam surfaces 58 and 58a respectively that correspond with said cam surfaces 48 and 48a respectively. When said cam surfaces 48 and 58, and 48a and 58a, come into contact with each other the constrictor sections, later described, are actuated inwardly to perform the constricting operation.
' Said constrictor forms the upper portion of the paper pulp container C while the material forming it is still pliable, to thereby reduce it and form a neck on the container. It has two constrictor sections 58 and twoothers 58a which, with said sliding members 55 and 55a respectively, form said constrictors. Actuation of said cam members 48 and 48a forces said constrictor sections 58 and 58a laterally inward to thereby constrict the upper portion of said container C. Each of said two constrictor sections 58 has an arcuate or shaping surface 58 which preferably measures one-quarter the circumference of said container C to be .constricted;'-and said two constrictor sections 5811 each has an arcuate or shaping surface 58a preferably the same size. Since the paper'pulp container upper portion is distorted and compressed when constricted I find it preferable to time the movement of the constrictor sections inwardly so that said shaping surfaces 59 commence to constrict said container C slightly before said shaping surfaces 5811 do. To accomplish this, said cam rods 41a are normally slightly spaced from said push ring 44 as shown in Figure 7 of the drawings so that said push ring 44 does not act upon said rods 41a as soon as it does upon said rods 41 with the result that said constrictor sections 58 start to move section I81: and it has a shoulder portion 82 formed in it where said neck ring 8| commences which serves to make a seat 82a in the container top edge to receive a cap or the like.
The spinner S supports the interior surface of the portion of said container C being constricted and smooths and rolls it out evenly. It has a stub shaft 53 in the periphery of which an encircling groove 58a is formed. Said shaft 88 has a tooth 84 at its upper end which enables it to operatively engage with said tooth I8a when the two are brought together whereby rotation of said shaft I8 rotates said stub shaft 88.
Said spinner 8 also has a supporting frame having a plate portion 81 and including a head portion 88 on said plate having a hole 88a extending through it and said plate 81 in which said stub shaft 88 rotates. Said frame plate 81 has a screw hole 81a therein extending laterally. Below said plate 81 is a central driving gear 88 to which said stub shaft 83 is afllxed, which gear 88 rotates therewith and it, in turn, rotatably drives Bear 10 on each side of it. A semi-circular, hollow roll member 12 is mounted on said plate 81 at one end and is attached to a said gear 18 bymeans of a pin 14 whereby said roll inwardly before said constrictor sections 58a do.
They complete their constricting movement at substantially the same time, however, since the inclined cam surfaces 48a and 58a cause a more rapid movement of said sections 58a inwardly than the movement the steeper cam surfaces 48 and 56 cause said sections 58to take.
Said constrictor sliding portions and 55a are slidable on a flat base'portion 58b of said sup-: port 58, and each has a slot 5512 through which a headed stud 51 extends, which stud is secured to said support 50. Said sliding portions 55 and 55a are held in normal or inoperative position by springs A which are anchored to said support 50 by pins P.
Since the top edge of said container 0 is preferably beaded over or thickened and a seat to receive a cap or cover made in said edge, I pro-- vide a former 68 to do this which has a lower neck ring 8| that extends into said container C when my device is operated and determines the size and interior shape of the container neck. Said former 50 is attached to said shaft lower 12 rotates with said gear 18. At the opposite end of said plate 81 another semi-circular, but solid roll member 18 is mounted, being attached to a said gear 18 below it by a said pin 14 whereby it rotates with said gear. This solidroll 18 serves as a weight and automatically causes said plate 81 to assume a vertical position as illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings when said shaft I8 and said stub shaft I8a are disengaged.
A machine screw 15 extends into said hole 81a and it has a reduced end 15a which extends into said stub shaft groove 88a to thereby prevent said shaft from falling out of said hole 88a, but permitting rotation thereof. Another machine screw 18 extends into said hole 81a at the opposite side from said screw 15. These screws pivotally hold said spinner S to said shaft lower section I8a.
Within said shaft lower section I8a a bushing 18 is inserted and held in place by a screw 18. Said bushing 18 is slotted as at at one edge and another slot 8I is formed therein opposite to said slot 88. Ears 82 at opposite sides of said slot 8I have holes therein to receive a pin 83 which pivotally supports a, trigger 85 between said ears 82. This trigger normally hangs downwardly with its end pointed in an outward direction as illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings. When said spinner S is in normal position said trigger 85 lightly bears against said hollow roll 12 as illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawings. When said shaft I8 moves downwardly it strikes said trigger 85 and moves it laterally against said hollow r011 12 to thereby force it outwardly through a side opening 88 in the side of said shaft lower section I8a. and said spinner S thereby assumes horizontal or operative position within said container C, being held there by said shaft I8 while in engagement with said stub shaft I8a. When the pressure is removed from said shaft I8 the solid or weighted roll 13 automatically causes said spinner S to move to vertical or inoperative position so it can be withdrawn from the container C after the constrlcting operation.
Said container C is held in position by a container receptacle or holder H which preferably is rotatable so that the container will be rotated during the constricting operation. Said holder H has an adjustable base 8| on which the container C rests, supported by a rod 93. A retaining member 92 supports the outer side wall of said container C, which latter may be maintained in its position by creating a vacuum outside of it so that said container C will be firmly held and will not be distorted at its lower portion during the constricting operation.
A pulley 99 is secured to said support 50 andis rotated by a belt I driven by any well known source of power not shown, thereby rotating said su port 50 and said holder H on a bed plate lfll of my device.
In the operation of my device rotation of said shaft I6 rotates said spinner 8, while rotation of said shaft I8 and stub shaft Ila rotates said rolls 12 and 13 through said gears 09 and 10. Since said holder H with the container 0 is also rotated at the same time, pressure is applied to said container C gradually and uniformly. This is true also of said former 60 which rotates with said shaft l6.
What I claim is:
1. Adevice for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a, holder for holding said container, a movable contrictor embodying arcuate sections that form a complete circle when in operative position to reduce the size of a portion of said container, cam means movable towards said constrictor sections and adapted to actuate them, means to actuate said cam memhers, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support a portion of the interior thereof during the constricting operation, means to move said spinner into operative position, means to rotate said spinner, and supporting means for said elements.
2. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container in upright position, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support a portion of it during the constricting operation, means to actuate said spinner upwardly and downwardly, and supporting means for said elements.
3. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor embodying more than two sections to reduce the size of a portion of said container having inclined cam surfaces, means to move said constrictor sections into operative position having inclined cam surfaces adapted to contact said other cam surfaces upon actuation, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support a portion of it durin the constricting operation, means to actuate said spinner to operative position, and supporting means for said elements.
4. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor embodying four sections to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move two of said constrictor sections into operative position, other means to move two other of said constrictor sections into operative position at a different time than said first two sections, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support a portion of it during the constricting operation, means to actuate said spinner, and supporting means for said elements.
5. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor'to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a former adapted to form the top edge of said container embodying a neck ring adapted to enter said container, means to actuate said former, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support a portion of the interior thereof during the constricting operation, means to move said spinner into operative position, and supporting means for said elements.
6. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said containers, means to rotate said holder, a
movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner embodying a supporting plate ,and two rolls mounted at opposite end portions of said plate adapted to enter said container and support a portion of it during the constricting operation, means pivotally attached to said plate adapted to rotate said spinner, and supporting means for said elements.
7. A device for shapin a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, means to rotate said holder, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the .constricting operation, means for rotating said spinner, and supporting means for said elements, said spinner embodying a supporting frame pivotally attached to said spinner rotating means and embodying a plurality of rolls adapted to support a portion of the inner surface of said container and rotatably attached to said frame, and means to rotate said rolls.
8. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container embodying.
more than two arcuate sections, cam means slidable towards said constrictor and adapted to actuate it embodying a plurality of members that correspond in number with said constrictor sections, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support a portion of the interior thereof durin the constricting operations, means to move said spinner into operative position and supporting means for said elements.
9. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container in upright position, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container embodying a plurality of sections movable laterally with' respect to said container holder, cam means slidable laterally towards said constrictor sections and adapted to actuate them embodying a plurality of members corresponding in number with said constrictor sections, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support a portion of the interior thereof during the constricting operations, means to move said spinner into operative position, and supporting means for said elements.
10. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container in upright position, a former to form the top edge of said container, supporting means to which said former is fixed, means to move said former supporting means downwardly, a movable constrictor separate from said former to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner connected to said supporting 7 means to move said constrictor into operative position embodying an upright rod movable upwardly and downwardly and an inclined cam surface that corresponds with and is adapted to contact said constrictor cam surface upon actuation of said rod to thereby move said constrictor into operative position, said means embodying an actuating member adapted upon actuation to contact said rod and thereby move said cam surfaces into contact with each other, a spinner adapted to support a portion of said container during the constrictin operations, and supporting means for said elements.
12. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor to reduce 25 the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation, means on which said spinner is ,mounted, supporting 3 means for said elements, said spinner embodying a supporting frame pivotally connected to said means on which said spinner is mounted, roll members mounted on said frame at opposite end portions thereof, and means adapted to move said spinner and roll members into operative position with said rolls next to the surface of the container portion that said constrictor reduces in size.
13. A device for shaping a container made of 40 moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation, a shaft connected to and adapted to be movable vertically by said means and on which said spinner is pivotally mounted, supporting means'for said elements, said spinner embodying a supporting frame pivotally connected to said shaft, roll members mounted on said frame at opposite ends thereof, and means adapted to move said spinner and roll members into operative position with said rolls next to the surface of the container portion that said constrictor reduces in size.
14. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation, a rotatable shaft on which said spinner is mounted, means to rotate said shaft, supporting means for said elements, said spinner embodying a supporting frame pivotally connected to said shaft, roll members mounted on said frame at opposite ends thereof, another rotatable shaft, means adapted to move into engagement with and actuate said latter shaft whereby said spinner and roll members move into operative position with said rolls next to the surface of the container portion that I said constrictor reduces in size.
15. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation. a shaft on which said spinner is pivotally mounted, supporting means for said elements, a trigger normally positioned adjacent to said spinner, a support for said trigger attached to said shaft to which sup ort said trigger is pivotally connected, and means adapted to actuate said trigger whereby it causes said spinner to move from inoperative position towards operative position.
16. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor to reduce the size'of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation embodying two smoothing members one of which is heavier than the other, a shaft on which said spinner is pivotally mounted, supporting means for said elements, said spinner normally extending in the same longitudinal direction as said shaft and being pivotally mounted to a portion of said shaft with said lighter smoothing member above said heavier one, a trigger normally positioned adjacent to said spinner lighter member, a support for said trigger attached to said shaft to which said trigger is pivotally connected, and means to actuate said trigger against said lighter member whereby it causes said spinner to move from inoperative position to operative position.
17. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, means to rotate said holder, a movable constrictor to reduce th size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation embodying two rolls one of which is heavier than the other, a rotatable shaft on which saidspinner is pivotally mounted, said spinner normally extending in the same longitudinaldirection as said shaft and'being pivotally mounted to a portion of said shaft with said lighter roll above said heavier one, a trigger normally bearing laterally against said lighter roll, a support for said trigger attached to said shaft from which said trigger pivotally hangs, and means adapted upon actuation to actuate said trigger laterally against said lighter roll whereby it causes said spinner rolls to extend laterally in operative position.
18. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation embodying a shaft, a rotatable shaft on which said spinner is pivotally mounted, means to rotate said shaft, another rotatable shaft, means to rotate said other shaft, instrumentalities to actuate said other shaft to operative position with said spinner shaft, supporting means for said elements, said spinner embodying a supporting frame pivotally connected to said first shaft, roll members mounted on said frame at opposite ends thereof each having a rotatable gear attached,
thereto, another gear in mesh with and between said two roll member gears, said spinner shaft bein rotatably mounted in said frame and attached to said other gear and adapted to rotate it which shaft is normally disengaged with but is adapted to operatively engage with said other shaft when the latter is actuated whereby said spinner is moved to operative position with said rolls next to the surface of the container portion being constricted and said gears are rotated.

A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation, a rotatable shaft on which said spinner is pivotally mounted, means to rotate said shaft, another rotatable shaft, means to rotate said other shaft, instrumentalities to move said other shaft vertically, supporting means for said elements, said spinner embodying a supporting frame pivotally connected to said first shaft and normally extending thereof, semicircular roll members mounted on said frame at opposite ends thereof each having a rotatable gear below and fixed thereto, another gear in mesh with and between said two roll member gears and below said frame, a shaft rotatably mounted in said frame and attached to said other gear and adapted to rotate it which shaft iS adapted to operatively engage with said other shaft when the latter is moved downwardly into engagement therewith whereby said spinner is moved to operative position with said frame extending at an angle to said first shaft and with said rolls next to the surface of the container portion being constricted and said gears are rotated.
20. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, means to rotate said holder, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor laterally into operative position, vertically operated means to actuate said constrictor moving means, a rotatable shaft connected to and operative with said vertically operated means, instrumentalities to rotate said shaft, another shaft, means to actuate said other shaft vertically and agencies to rotate it, a former to form the top edge of said container, said former being attached to and movable with said first-mentioned shaft, supporting means for said elements, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation pivotally attached to said first shaft and movable vertically and rotatable therewith, said spinner embodying a supporting frame and two roll members at opposite ends thereof, rotatable gears attached to said roll members, and another rotatable gear in mesh with said flrst,gears and attached to said other shaft and rotatable therewith.
21. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, means to rotate said holder, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of sa d container, means to move said constrictor laterally into operative position, verticaliy operated means to actuate said constrictor moving means, a rotatable shaft connected to and operative w th said vertically operated means, instrumentalities to rotate said shaft, another shaft, means to actuate said other shaft vertically and agencies to rotate it, a former to form in the same longitudinal direction the top edge of said container embodying a neck ring adapted to enter said container. said former being attached to and movable with said firstmentioned shaft, supporting means for said elements, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation pivotally attached to said first shaft and movable vertically and rotatable therewith, said spinner embodying a supporting frame and two roll members at opposite ends thereof, rotatable gears attached to said roll members, another rotatable gear in mesh with said first gears and attached to said other shaft and rotatable therewith, supporting means fixed to said first shaft, and a trigger pivotally mounted in said supporting means and normally suspended adjacent to one of said roll members in a position where it is adapted to actuate said roll member from inoperative to operat ve position when said other shaft is actuated to operative position.
22. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, means to rotate said holder, a movable constrictor to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container and support it during the constricting operation, means adapted to rotate said spinner, and supporting means for said elements, said spinner embodying two rotatable rolls having a spherical outer surface adapted to support the inner surface of said container, means to move said spinner and rolls to operative position into said container; and means to rotate said rolls.
23. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor embodying a plurality of sections to completely surround said container when in operative position to reduce the size of a portion of said container, said constrictor embodying cam surfaces and shaping surfaces, means to move said constrictor into operative position and embodying cam surfaces that correspond with and are adapted to contact said constrictor cam surfaces upon actuation of said means, instrumentalities to actuate said means, movable means adapted to support a portion of the interior of said container during the constricting operation which are normally in one position, instrumentalities to move said container supporting means angularly into another and operative position, and supporting means for the aforesaid elements.
24. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor embodying a plurality of sections to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said constrictor sections into operative position, instrumentalities to actuate said means, a spinner embodying a plurality of rolls adapted to support a portion of said container during the constricting operation which are normally in one position, instrumentalities to move said spinner angularly into another and operative position, means to rotate said holder, means to rotate said spinner, means to rotate said spinner rolls when in operative position and supporting means for the aforesaid elements.
25. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a holder for holding said container, a movable constrictor embodying a plurality of sections to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move a portion of said sections into operative position and other means to move another portion of said sections .into operative position in timed relation to but at a different time than said first-mentioned means, a. spinner adapted to enter said container and support a portion of it during the constricting operation, means to move said spinner into said container, and supporting means for said elements.
26. A device for shaping a container made of moist paper pulp comprising a, holder for holding l0 said container, a movable constrictor embodying a plurality of sections to reduce the size of a portion of said container, means to move said sections into operative position, a spinner adapted to enter said container embodying hollow and solid roll members to support a portion of said container during the constricting operation, means to move said spinner into said container, and supporting means for said elements.
