EGG-BEATER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,843, dated May 3, 1859.

T o all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, S. F. JONES, of St. Paul, in the county of Decat-ur and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Device for Beating Eggs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a vertical section of my invention taken in the line a?, Fig. 2. Fig. 2, a plan or top View of do.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it. l

A, represents a mug or cylindrical vessel, in the upper end of which a cup B, is fitted, the upper edge of the cup being provided with a flanch a, which rests on the upper edge of the vessel A, and sustains the cup.

C, is a shaft which passes through the bottom Z), of the cup B and has its upper bearing 0, at the center of a cross bar or strap d, attached to cup B, the bottom b, of the cup having a short tube c, attached to it to serve as a proper bearing for the shaft. The lower end of the shaft C, rests on the bottom of the vessel A. The shaft C, is allowed to turn freely in its bearings and it has a series of horizontal rods f, passing through it to form beaters, said beaters being placed in two rows, one row passing through the shaft at right angles to the other.

To the upper part of the shaft C, just above the cup B, two cords g, 7L, are attached. These cords are secured to screws in the opposite ends of a shaft bar D, which is fitted and allowed to slide or work freely in guides z', z', attached to the cup B. The

upper end of shaft C, passes through the slot in the bar, said slot, designated by j,

being sufliciently long to permit of a properdegree of play or vibration of the bar. Vhen the cords become slack they may be readily tightened by turning the screws to which they are attached. The cords g, L, are attached to the shaft C, and are wound on it inv opposite directions.

The implement is used as follows: The cup B, is lifted from the mug or vessel A, the shaft C, and the bar D, being connected therewith, and the eggs to be beaten are placed in the mug or vessel. The cup B, is then adjusted in the top of the mug or vessel A and the bar D, moved back and forth by hand, the cords g, 7L, giving a reciprocating rotating motion to the shaft C, and the beaters F, acting on the eggs properly beating them in a short time.

From the above description it will be seen that the lower end of shaft C, requires no step, it merely resting on the bottom of the mug or vessel. The mug or vessel may be readily cleaned, by merely placing some water in it, and agitating it for a short time by actuating the shaft C, as when beating the eggs.

An egg-beater having a cup B, shaft C, strap (d) tube (e) slotted bar D, cords (g, lz.) attached to shaft C, and to adjusting screws in bar D, and otherwise made as herein shown and described.
