LOCK FOR PIANOFORTES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,833, dated May 3, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, P. F. DODGE, of fest Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Lock for Pianofortes and for all Purposes Vhere a Lock of Like Const-ruction May be Needed, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a new method of moving the bolt of a lock as above, whereby the operating parts are much simplified, rendering the same more effective and less expensive to manufacture.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and mode of operation.
Figure l represents the interior of the lock with the bolt in place or unlocked. Fig. 2 presents a view of the lock with the bolt raised to its highest position and Fig. 3 a view of the same when the bolt is carried forward or locked.
A in the drawings denotes the bolt; B, the tumbler which actuates the bolt, and C, the spring which steadies the bolt in its motion and keeps it in place when locked or unlocked. The tumbler is provided on one side with a projection F, (against which the spring C bears) and on the other side with a tooth or arm E which is the lever to move the bolt in the following manner: The bolt has a recess D, (shaped substantially as seen in the drawings) cut in it in such a manner that as the arm is turned up or rot-ated by the key placed in the center of the tumbler (the bolt being down) the bolt will be irst raised to its full height as"` seen in Fig. 2 and then pressed forward or locked as seen in Fig. 3, the bolt A, being restricted to a vertical and horizontal movement by the guide pins Gr and H.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Actuating the bolt by means of the arm E of the tumbler B and the recess D in the bolt A.
