In.. order to hold themed; injuprght-position,
locking means isprovdefl fols lokrlgeneaeement with the. 199mm edge I3 0f the locking recess Il in the hingeplate; and to accommodate such` lockthrough the hinge plate and attaching portion I6 of the locking member into the seat.
The locking portion I5 of the spring plate is yieldable into the recess I4 and provided with top and bottom laterally extending guiding flanges I 8 that engage the top and bottom surfaces ofthe recess I4, as shown in Fig. 5, to hold the locking member in proper relation and guide its movement, while I9 designates a locking projection formed on the locking portion and arranged to engage the bottom edge I3 of the locking recess II in the hinge plate when the back is in upright position and thus hold the back firmly with the rubber bumper 6 compressed between the lower edge of the back vand the top surface of the seat.
The outer surface vof the locking projection I9 is tapered and bevelled upwardly, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, to permit the back 3 to be elevated readily during which the hinge plate I rides downwardly over the tapered bevelled surface of the locking projection I9, forcing the locking portion I inwardly of the recess I4, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, until the locking recess II of the hinge plate is coincident with the locking projection I9. Thereupon the locking portion I5 moves back to the full line position of Fig. 4 and projection I9 enters the recess II and is held in contact with the lower edge I3 thereof. 1 In this position, the locking projection holds the back rmly and securely in upright positionin such a way that it cannot. be accidentally lowered, and in order to releasethe back to permit folding, the locking member is provided with means to facilitate pressing the locking vprojection I9 inwardly out of engagement with the locking recess II in the hinge plate.
This is accomplished by a forwardly extending operating or,nger portion that preferably overlies the locking projection I9 and is spaced therefrom. This operating portion is designated at and is vconnected to the locking portion of the spring plate by a wall 2I which is arranged so as `to be flush with the rearedge of the seat. The
wall 2I does not project rearwardly beyond the rear edge of the seat, and hencethe seat when folded can be packed in a minimum space determined by the outside dimensions of the seat and folded side arms.
When the back is to be folded,A the operating portion 20 is pressed toward the'side edge of the seat, forcing the yieldable spring locking portion I5 and locking projection I9 inwardly of the recess I4 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 until the locking projection I9 is clear of thelocking recess II, whereupon the back 3 can be swung forwardly and folded on to the seat in the manner shown in Fig 2. This operation can be facilitated by pressing the back slightly rearasf Wardly to compress further the resilient bumper` 6 at the same time that operating portion 20 is pressed toward the sideedge -of the seat, and while this operation is not necessary to the release of the back, it eases the-operation by slightly decreasing the resistance to inward movement of the locking member through moving the'edge I3 of the locking recess in the hinge plate slightly downwardly with relation to the locking projection I9, so that the latter can be pressed more readily away from the hinge plate and into the recess I4.
