'7 Claims. (Cl.'242110) v This invention relates to reels, and has reference more especially to reels useful in the textile industry to revolvably support yarn supply packages or skeins, for example, annular "cakes of rayon as they come from the manufacturer, incident to spinning and spooling operations or other subsequent processing.
In connection with reels of the kind referred to, I aim to provide for the firm support and positive retainment of the yarn packages throu hout the period of unwinding, and yet permit quick and easy application of the packages without necessitating disassembling of any of the parts of the reels or the use of any tools for the purpose.
One Way in which the foregoing and other objects and attendant advantages may be attained in practice with economic use of readily available materials and at relatively small cost of manufacture will appear from the following detailed description of the attached drawings,
wherein Fig. l is a fragmentary view in top plan of a portion of a creel frame with a reel conveniently embodying my invention, journalled for free rotation thereon.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the reel in end elevation.
Fig. 3 is an axial section of the reel.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the reel prepared for application of a yarn package.
. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the hub member of the reel;
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken as indicated by the angled arrows VI-VI in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 7 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1, of a modified reel constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention for non-rotative support and over end delivery of the yarn from the yarn Package. a
With reference first more particularly to Figs. 1-4 of these illustrations it will be noted that my improved reel, in the form there shown, has a core or hub member ID, and a skeleton body or drum II. The hub member in may be of wood and in the present instance is provided at opposite ends with gudgeons or trunnions l2 adapted to be received in the open bearings of the creel frame l3 as shown in Fig. 1. In accordance with my invention, the skeleton drum of the reel is constituted by a plurality of radially-arranged counterpart components which are fixedly attached to the hub member in a manner presently explained. Each component l5 of the skeleton drum II is fashioned from a single length of spring wire so bent as to provide a relatively sharp angled horizontally elongate U-shaped yarn package engaging portion I6 which normally xtends substantitally parallel to the reel axis as in Fig. 73, and a similarly disposed sustaining spring portion ll of hair spring configuration, whereof the legs are outwardly bowed in relation to each other, also as clearly shown in Fig. 3. In each of the elements l5, one end of the wire is finished 01f with a closed eye as at 18 at one side of the U-shaped portion l6, while the latter at its other side merges with one leg of the sustaining springportion I! through a fiat outstanding retroversion or loop IS. The other or anchorage leg of the spring portion ll of each elementv l5 connects through a multi-turn spiral 20- with the first mentioned leg of said spring portion, and is flattened somewhat as at 2| and has its end bent at right angles to provide an anchorage lug 22.
In assembling the reel parts,. the anchorage lugs22 of the skeleton drum components I5 are individually inserted into radial socket holes 23 provided for their reception around the hub member ID adjacent one end thereof as shown in Fig. 3, and the fiattenedsegments 2l-of the anchorage legs of the spring portions l1 lodged in longitudinal recessions or flutings 25 likewise provided on said ,hub member and aligned with said holes as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. Finally a tight fitting slip ring 26 is forced over the hub member [0 so as to embrace the anchorage legs of the spring portions ll of the components l5 at the region of their embe'dment and so rigidly hold said components definitely ositioned relative to said hub member.
In preparation for the application of a yarn package P, the skeleton drum H is inwardly compressed, that is to say, the package-engaging portion It of each of its components I5 is depressed toward the hub member [0 and locked laterally beneath the coil 20 of thehair spring sustaining portion l1 as shown in Fig. 4. With this accomplished, the collapsed drum H is thrust, contracted end forward, into the hollow of the annular yarn package. whereupon the portions iii of the components l5 are released into engagement with the inner periphery of the yarn package.
The springs I l are so designed as to constantly.
exert gentle pressure upon the yarn package from within until the yarn is completely run off. and will moreover adapt themselves to internal "irregularities or variations in the internal diameters of different packages. The package is thus firmly supported with the reel running freely in the bearings l3 (Fig. 1). its retainment being assured by the end guards jointly formed on the skeleton drum l I by the sides l8 and IQ of the U-shaped portions iii of the several components l5.
In Fi 7 the reel of my invention. sli ht y modified for use in the over end delivery ofthe yarn Y from the packa e P. is i lustrated. For the support of the reel I have shown a bar or rail 21 which is provided with an aperture 28 for the snug reception of one of the gudgeons l2, i. e., the gudgecnadjacent the region ofzanchorage of the radial components 15 in the hub I 0. The
modified reel is identical with the first described one except in that the free ends of the yarn package engaging portions [6 of its radial com ponents I5, which portions are in the form of cantilever extensions of the :lspringrpoirtions 1:1,,
are bent outwardly at an angle of aboutmwenty five or thirty degrees as at |8a instead of at right angles. In order to keep the yarnX running outward during over end delivery, I have provided, for association in concentric-relation with the reel, a yarn deflecting disk 29 which 'm'ay'beof fib'eiprfthelikewithja smooth rounded edge "and pf a iiiameterfsomewh'at larger than that of thereel body'whereby the yarn *Yiis deflected as shown {to clear ,the g'uard projections Hla untilthe 'last round is removed. shown, the deflecting-disk 2-9 iscen'trally'apertured as at '30 tofit snugly'over th-e'upperm'ost g d eon'f f 'In "all other respects fthe'modifie'd' 11861 of Fig. "'7
is identicalwith'thatj featuredin {Figsi 71 4:, and z accordingly, in order 'tofpreclude repetitive description,' all ,corresponding parts in the modification have been. identifie'chwith the .same I111- meralspreviouslyemployed; I
