ENGINEER-ARCHITECT SCALE Filed sept. 27, 1944 2 sheets-sheet 2 ATTO RN EVS Patented Aug. 14, `1945 Wesley Dale Weeks and Ludwig Kube, Phillips Tex.; said Kube assignor to said Weeks Application September 27, 1944, Serial No. 556,032 y 3 claims.- (fcl. 33-10'1) The invention relates to a changeable scale rule, and more especially rto changeable triangul lar rule.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a rule of this character, wherein it has nested reversible scale bladesadapting these for immediate use by engineers, draftsimen, architectsor others, the rule being a. combination in strument, and is compact, sothat it can be conveniently transported, stored in the least possible space, and is handy for the purposes intended thereof.
Another object of the invention is thel prvision of a rule of this character, wherein there is involved the grouping of different scale blades, which are reversibly connected together for selected use with dispatch and convenience.
A. further object of the invention is the'provision of a rule of this character, wherein the scale blades are hinged to each other' in a novel and unique manner, so that a selected blade can be promptly brought into a working position, without interference by the other non-working blades, and all of such blades are held in a xed relation to one another, either in a working or non-working position.
A still further object of the invention is theprovision oi a rule of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eicient in operation, strong, durable, readilyv and easily adjusted, changeable with dispatch, conveniently operated, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as Will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which show the preferred embodiment of the invention,
` and pointed out in the claims hereunto `ap Figure 2 is a vertical cross sectional view.
through the rule, the blades by full lines being shown folded relative to eachother and by dotted lines unfolded.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken lon the line 3 3 `of Figure 2 looking in the direction ofthe arrows, an arrow being indicated therewith for showing the direction of folding and unfolding` movements of the blades.
Figure. 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal sec-` tional .view through therulel at its capped end.
Figure `5 is a -fragmentary plan view of the capped .end shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line x Figure'4 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 7 is .a perspective view of the end looking toward its outer face.
vFigure 8 is a view similar to toward its inner face.
cali` Figure 'I looking Figure 9 is a perspective view, partly broken away, showing the blades arranged for the use of the rule as an architects scale.` x Figure 1,0 is a view similafto Figure 9 showing the rule changed for use as an engineers scale.
Figure 11 is a vertical transverse sectional view showing in detail the hinge connections betweenthe blades, such being a modificationover that shown in Figure 3.
Figure 12 is a sectional view taken on the line ill-l2 of Figure l1 looking in the direction oi' arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally the scale rule constructed in accordance'V with the invention, and comprises a series of three ruling blades lll, il, and i2, respectively, each having on one face an architects graduated scale markings i3, while on the opposite face are the engineers graduated scale markings lil." It is designed that the architects scale markings i3 of all of -the blades l0, il and l2, be .visible at one and the same time, this being also true with respect to the lengineer-s scale markings Id' and. to accomplish this, the
ends of the blades adjacent to each other are swingably connected by hinges l5 to a substantial;
the drawings.
. To hold the blades w, Il and |2,'in the trian-V gularly related reversed positions with respect to each other, there is provided a removable substantially triangular shaped latching cap or end head I9, which at the marginal edges thereof is formed with counterseats 20 for the ends of the blades to be engaged by this cap or head for fricreleasing lips or tongues 20, which overly the outer faces oi the blades IU, II and I2, when such cap or head is engaged on the latter.
In Figures 11 and 12, of the drawings, there is shown a slight modification, wherein the cap or head 2l carries the hinge straps 22 which are loosely looped about the hinge pintles 23 formed assegna gageable with the other ends of said blades to latch the same in their triangular relation to one another.
2. A rule-of the kind described, comprising a plurality of blades having scale markings on the inside and outside faces thereof, an end cap hingedly connected to the blades for the reverse swinging of the latter into reverse triangular reon the ends next to this cap or head 2l of the blades 24, the latter being identical to the blades I0, II and I2, with respect to with this exception.
What is claimed is:
l. A rule of the kind described, comprising av plurality of bladesV having scale markings on the inside and outside faces thereof, an end cap hingedly connected to the blades for the reverse swinging of the latter into reverse triangular relation to each other, and a second end cap enthe scale markings,
lation to each other, a. second end cap engageable with the other ends of said blades to latch the same in their triangular relation to one another and counterseats formed in the second end' cap of receiving the ends of the blades therein.
3. A rule of the kind described. comprising a plurality of blades having scale markings on the inside and outside faces thereof, an end cap hingedly connected to the bladesvv for the reverse swinging of the latter into reverse triangular relation to each other, a second end cap engageable with the other ends of said bladesY to latch the same in their triangular relation to one another, counterseats, forms in the second ,end cap of receiving the ends of the blades therein and lips on the second end cap.
