FAUCET.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,81*?, dated May 3, 1859.
T 0 all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SILAs BAKKER, of the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mode of Construct-ing' Faucets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being' had to the accompanying drawing' and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the formation of `a faucet with a horizontal. slide, and vertical discharging orifice.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation.
In the drawing Figure l is a side view of the faucet. Fig'. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a view of the bottom reversed (with orifice open). Fig. 4 an end View.
My improvements are in the direct downward formation of the discharging' orifice A, of the fluid passage B, whereby the horizontal direction of the fluid striking the solid end C, is compelled to flow vertically through the orifice A into the vessel placed to receive it.
The cut off slide E, moves horizontally along the bottom, actuated by the handle F, and the pin K, in the slot L, and is held in position by the band G, which is turned over at each end and catches on the slides, H, H. The set screw I, is to adjust the cut off slide E, by tightening' the same to make a perfect joint on the face. The outer end of the cut off slide E, is finished with a circular or indent corresponding' with the curve of the orifice A and beveled to a shear' edge, so as to cut off the passing fluid by the gradual concentration of the flowing stream, preventing the spreading of the same sidewise, which is always the case when the end of the slide is made convex, instead of concave, also in opening to draw off the fluid it has the same effect.
I do not claim as new the causing' of the fluid to flow vertically, or the slide for cutting off and stopping' the same.
I claim as new the mode of constructing slide faucets in the manner described, to obviate the objection to the old way of allowing the fluid to shoot straight out, and spreading sidewise, particularly when used as a molasses gate when there is a high atmospheric pressure on the same, which is frequently the case in hot weather.
This faucet is simple and durable and economical in construction.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The vertical discharging orifice A, as herein described, and the concave end cut off to the face slide E, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
