UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM L. ZOBKOWSKI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO ISAAC NEWMAN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 238,072, dated February 22, 1881.
Application filed September 22, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABRAHAM L. ZORKOW- sin, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to dispense with the use of bones or steels on the sides of corsets by substituting therefor piping or cording, and in having the same so arranged in groups or layers running at or nearly at right angles to each other, so as to form sufficiently stiff sides for the corset, and at the same time allow the same to more evenly and snugly fit the body of the wearer than would be possible if bones or steels were used. They also afford the wearer more freedom and comfort by their use.
My invention consists in the arrangement of one or more groups or series of vertical cords on the sides of corsets and one or more groups or series of lateral cords, preferably on bands stitched over the same and into the corset at their edges, with a space between each of said bands. This will give suflicient stiifness to support thecorsetin position and keep it in shape, while the space between the bands affords the corset sufficient elasticity or flexibility to conform to the shape and add to the comfort of the wearer, as well as make the corset last longer than it would if bones or steels were used, as there will be nothing hard to cut the fabric at the point where the bones usually project; and where bones or steels running laterally at the bottom or hip portion of the corset are used, as in some corsets, for support, they invariably break or permit the corset to warp and our], which my improvement will prevent.
The drawing represents a side view of a corset showing my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
In the case here presented A A represent a series of parallel cords arranged vertically on the sides of the corset in the usual manner of piping.
B B represent a series of bands, strips, or zones, each having a group or series of parallel cords, C C, running lengthwise therewith.
over bone strips which run vertically.
These bands are set over the vertical cording A A, and are secured in their several places by stitching along their edges D, and the extremities are stitched between the front and back sections, E E. These cordings may be made of any soft, fibrous, flexible material.
I preferably make they corset with one wide band or zone at the middle of the corset, with two or more smaller bands or zones above and below, all running laterally. Instead of the bands the groups of horizontal cords may be on continuous cloth, and the bands might run vertically instead of horizontally; or both the vertical and horizontal cords might be on bands somewhat separated from one another.
I am aware that bones, horns, and steels have been used laterally and diagonally on the sides of corsets. This I do not claim. Neither do I claim the use of the vertical cording alone, as I am aware that this has been used in corsets.
I am also aware that in skeleton-corsets simple bands have been arranged crosswise These I do not claim; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A corset provided at its sides with vertical groups of cords with intervening spaces extending from top to bottom, and separated groups of cords crossin gthe said vertical groups at right angles, or nearly so, the respective vertical and horizontal groups of cords being stitched to separate bands or strips of cloth, and the outer strips being stitched to the under strips, and both stitched to or joined with the front and back sections of the corset, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. A corset provided with groups of cords extending in vertical and horizontal directions and crossing each other at the sides of the corset, the said groups, one or both sets, being stitched to bands or strips of cloth somewhat separated, and the said bands stitched to the corset, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
