The invention is principally' characterized by the provision in a lock of the type above referred to of a straight guide for the cross vbar and of an eective key device for connecting the adjusting arm and the lock spindle.` i
In the' accompanying drawing one embodiment of the invention` is illustrated by way of example.
Fig. 1 is 'a View of the lock viewed from the inner side of the door, the cover plate being removed n and the members being set for unlocking. Fig. 2 is a sectionA on line II-II in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the device viewed from above with a corresponding cover removed and a portion-of the bolt in section. Fig. 4 shows some members in the position when the lock is unlocked. Fig. 5 isa detail plan'view of the key connecting the spindle and actuating arm and Fig. 6 isa section on line VI-VI in Fig. 4.

The lock comprises a lock house with lock members. The lock spindle 48 is rotatably mounted in the bottom plate 2 of the lock house and the lock bolt 55 extends through a side wall 4 of the house. To the spindle is attached an angular arm 42 which by means of intermediate toothedrings acts on tumblers I9 which are rotatably mounted on a bolt I8 and provided with notches 2|. The lock bolt 55 is displaceable in an aperture in the'side wall 4 and extends to the left in Fig. v1 into the lock house, terminating in a bolt shank 56. The upper portion 51 of the lock bolt is bent inwards toward the plate I5, and is provided with an oblique edge 58 (Fig. 4) corresponding to and coacting with the edge 83 of the plate 11. A boss 9 to the left (Fig. 1) is by means of screws 63 fastened to the bottom plate 2 which also has a corner boss II to the right. The boss 9 has a channel 62 acting as a guide forthe bolt shank 56 which is covered by a plate 6I iixed to the same boss by means of screws 60. A lever 3I is by means of a bolt 30 swingably mounted on the right comer boss II and is provided with two abutments 32, 33 adapted to cooperate, respectively, with the abutment 19 and the portion 51 of the bolt.
The angular member 42 is formed with a central hub 43 which is screwed onto the end of the lock spindle 48. In the angular arm 42 (which in Fig. 2 is turned downwards) and the central is inserted into the slot and into a corresponding slot 5I in the spindle 48, the latter slot being of a. greater length than the slot 44, to afford adjustment such as required for variation in the thickness of doors.
The angulararm 42 is on each side provided with a notch' 46 somewhat narrower than the thickness of the arm, so that at each notch an extending edge 41 is formed which edges as well as the notches are divided into two portions by the slot 44.
The key 45 has T-form as seen in Fig. 5 with two extensions 49, one on each side which are bent into the notches 46 after the key is inserted, by which the key is held in position and prevented for sliding axially. At 'the inner end the key has a central extension. 50 o! the same breadth as the diameter of the spindle which extension enters the inner portion of the slot 5i in the spindle to guide the key. The key 45 can in this manner be given a breadth as great as the diameter of the central hub 43 as well as a great length and goes through th'e spindle 48, so that the key is resting on both sides of the spindle and no play can arise when the key is correctly in serted. To insure tightness in spite of imperfections in the manufacture of the parts, the key may be slightly fbent so as to develop a degree of binding action tending to maintain the key and spindle in proper relative position.
The operation of the devices is as follows.
In the position of the members in Fig. l the tumblers I9 are adjusted according to the right combination and the angular arm 42 is disposed to engage the bolt 55 and withdraw the same into the lock. Upon further turning of the angular arm the edge 51 of the bolt will be pressed against the oblique edge 83 of the plate 'i1 (Fig. 4), so that the cross bar I8 is forced downwards into the notches 2| of the tumblers permitting the inward movement of the lock bold which would not be possible, if the plate 'l1 wouldbe held in the upper position on account of any one of the notches of the tumblers not being placed correctly underneath the cross bar. At the downward movement of the cross bar 18 the abutment 19 will press against the abutment 32 turning the lever 3|.
When the lock bolt is fully pushed into the lock, the members are in the position shown in Fig. 4. On account of the rectilinear guiding of the cross bar the width of the notches in the tumblers can be substantially the same as the thickness of the cross bar, so that even a minor error in the adjustment of the tumblers will prevent the downward movement of the cross bar into the notches. Every force from the cross bar directed sideways against the tumblers is eliminated.
When locking the lock, the bolt 55 is pushed outwardly and the bent portion 51 of the bolt will engage the abutment 33 and turn the lever 3l, whereby the abutment 32 will push the cross bar 'I8 upwardly out of the notches 2| of the tumblers, so that these can be turned back to locked position in known manner.
The details of the arrangement may obviously be subjected to different modifications within the scope of the appendedclaims. The cross bar 'I8 can be spring actuated and thus held in the upper position in order to eliminate the effect of a possible play between the lever 3| and the lock bolt.
What I claim is:
1. In a combination lock a movable spindle extending through the door. an adjusting ann attached to the spindle, a pivot pin, tumblers ro- 58 (Fig. 4) of the bent portion tatably mounted on said pin to be adjusted by said arm into unlocking position and provided with notches in said position being underneath a movable cross bar of corresponding width coacting with the lock bolt, and a rectilinear guide for said cross bar extending radially of and held in position by said pivot pin.
2. In a combination lock a movable spindle extending through the door, an adjusting arm ata movable cross bar of corresponding width coactlng with the lock bolt, a rectilinear guide for said cross bar held in position by said pin, and
