Description
July 10, 1945. J. A. L A BILLE INHALER Filed April 8, 1940 INVEbgFOR ATTORNEYS Patented July l0, 1 945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE INHALER Joseph A. La Bille, Chicago, Application April s, 1940, serial No. 328,555
1 Claim.
My invention relates to inhalers for the treatment of nasobronchial disorders and the like.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide an inhaler so constructed and arranged whereby a suitable medicant may be readily inserted therein together with means for subjecting the medicant to heated moist air whereby vapors or fumes mixed with the medicant may be drawn into the lungs through the nasal passages by the respiratory action of the person being treated.
Another object of my invention is to provide a nasobronchial inhaler which is simple in construction, durable in use, ecient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claim and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in condition to be applied to the nose.
Figure 2 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the medicant supporting element. f
In practicing my invention, as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing, I provide an elongated tube 5 formed at one end with a counterbore 6 defining a seat 1 on which is positioned a disk 8. The disk 8 has centrally fixed thereto one end of an axially extending pin 9, the opposite end of which is cuspidated as at l whereby said pin may be inserted through a body Il impregnated with or formed of a suitable medicant for a purpose hereinafter set forth. The disk 8 and pin 9 constitute a medicant supporting or anchoring element which is readily removable and insertable through the counterbored end nf the tube. Opposite sides of the disk 8 are deformedto provide sector-shaped flanges l2 for embracing the lower end of the body Il and said disk is of a latticed construction preferably formed of a screen-like material.
Mounted on the counterbored end of the tube and having frictional engagement therewith is a nipple I3 adapted to be inserted into the nostril of a user whereby fumes or vapor, mixed with the medicant, may be drawn within the lungs by the respiratory action of the user. The
v tube is heated by winding a hot towel I4 therearound with one end of said towel being arranged adjacent the nipple to permit exposure of the latter and the opposite end of said towel extending an appreciable distance away from the opposite end of the tube and completely enclosing the same. Obviously, a towel suiivciently saturated with hot water or the like when thus applied about the tube serves to provide heated moist air for within the tube during operation of the device, thus enabling the user to inhale the vaporized medicant in a highly heated state with beneficial results.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current knowledge,v readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. Moreover, it is. not indispensable that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and sub-combinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not conlined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose te which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in various forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claim. Also, while I have set forth my invention as being utilized for effecting inhalation through the nasal passages, it is to be understood that the nipple may be so modied to permit inhalation through the mouth.
What I claim is:
In an inhaler, a tubular body member having lthe bore thereof enlarged in the forward end portion so as to form an annular seat therein, a nipple attached to the forward end of the body member having a reduced bore co-axial with the bore of the body, a at open mesh disk mounted transversely within the tubular body having diametrically opposed marginal portions seated on the said annular seat, the said disk having opposite marginal portions bent to form forwardly directed anges, a pin having its inner end fixed to the center of the disk and extending axially of the tubular body, the said pin having its outer end tapered to a point disposed` to project into the reduced bore of the nipple, and a porous medicament saturated body impaled upon the said pin and pressingly held thereon within the tubular body between the nipple and the disk.
JOSEPH A. LA BILLE.
