LOC-OMOTIVE.
SPECIFICATION fdiming part of Letters Patent No. 237,938, dated February 15, 1881.
Application filed November 12,1880. (No model.)
.the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a substitute for the usual style of springs supporting a locomotive-engine on driving-wheels and trucks, whereby the engine will be free to swing laterally as well as from front to rear, and will consequently ride more easily and with less wear upon the rails.
The invention consists of a frame supported on standards that rest on the boxes of the driving-wheels of the engine and itself supporting the engine,
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the device attached to an engine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on line a; a}, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the boiler; B B, the driving-wheels thereof; B B, the journal-boxes of said driving-wheels B B.
D D represent the outer side sheets of the fire-box, and E is the platform in front of the fire-box.
The frame supporting the boiler A consists of the parallel side timbers F F, extending nearly the entire length of the engine, and on either side of it, above the level of the fire-box platform E, and secured to the tops of the standards G, that are suitably secured on the tops of the journal-boxes B. From the rear ends of said timbers F F depend the hangers H H, in the lower ends of which are secured the ends of the cross timber 1, whose center is projected upward, and is provided with a groove, a, in which rests a corresponding triangular lug, b, that is secured on the under side of the platform E. Across the front ends u of the timbers F F is secured a yoke or tim- The frame consists, further, of two heavier and longer parallel side timbers, L L, ar-
ranged beneath the timbers F F, and straddled by the hangers H H, and having their rear ends bolted up to the platform E by-bolts d d and their front ends held in hangers M M, that depend from either side of the boiler, near the. front thereof. Said timbers L L are also held against the sides D D of the fire-box by clamps or bands N N. Hence it will be seen that the engine is supported on the frame at eight points, a, c, d d, M M, and N N, while the frame itself is supported on the four driving-wheel'boxes B. 7
With this device as a substitute for theordinary supporting-springs, the engine is securely held, while at the same time it will more readily move or roll from side to side and longitudinally in conforming with the irregularities or unevenness of the track, and because the engine is thus less rigidly connectedor more yieldingly connected-With therunning-gear the engine-wheels will run with more elasticity over the rails, and consequently will hammer and wear the rails less than is done by engines mounted in the ordinary manner. Less power will also berequired to obtain a given speed, and hence the consumption of fuel will be less.
The device is cheaper also than the ordinary arrangement of springs, and can readily be applied to all locomotive-engines, with perhaps some slight modifications that will not change the nature of the invention.
Suitable springs may be substituted for the cross-timbers I K, if it be desired to have a more elastic frame.
This device can also be applied to cartrucks as a substitute for the ordinary arrangement of springs, with the advantage of economy and of making the cars run more easily.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a means for mounting locomotives, a frame constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of parallel side timbers, F F, standards Gr, hangers H H,
cross-timbers I K, parallel side timbers L L, K, side timbers L L, bolts 01 d, hangers M M, hangers M M, and clamps N N, arranged as and clamps N N, arranged substantially as set forth. herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the boiler A, pro- HECTOR RANSOM WILSON. 5 Vided with lugs b b and clamps N N, ofjonr- Witnesses:
