Description

NOISE MAKING DEVICE Filed Aug. 3, 1944 lmvemfor Patented June 26, 1945 UNITED STATES 'iATENT OF E NOIS EMAKING DEVICE Truman Gile,'Miami Springs, Fla,
Application August 3, 1944, Serial No. 547,831
4 Claims. (Cl. 46 -191) My invention relates to improvements in noisemaking devices, of the percussion type, for toy guns, the primary object in view being to provide simply constructed, inexpensive devices for incorporation in present day toy guns to produce a sound similar to that resulting from the discharge of a cartridge, and which are doubleacting for maximum speed of sound production, and proof against mis-operation tending to damage or impair the efficiency thereof.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a, fragmentary view in longitudinal section of a toy gun equipped according to my invention with the combinedtrigger and cocking plate in substantially the forward limit of movement thereof,
Figure 2 is a similar view with said plate in an intermediate position, I
Figure 3 is another similar view showing said plate in the rearward limit of movement thereof.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, my improved noise-making device has been shown therein as embodied in a toy gun having a stock I surmounted by a barrel breech section 2 from which a hand grip post 3 depends forwardly of the stock I. A T-shaped, through slot 4 is provided in the breech section 2 extending longitudinally in the plane of the gun.
The slot 4 opens onto the top of said breech section 2 and onto the bottom of said section, between the stock I and the hand grip post 3, and forms in said section a pair of flat front and rear stop ledges 6, 1 at the front and rear ends of said slot 4, respectively.
A fiat percussion bar 8 of resilient material, such as suitable wood, extends flatwise along the breech section 2 at the top of the slot 4 and is fixed intermediate its ends in said slot to provide upwardly flexible front and rear ends 9, H! on said bar adapted to react downwardly when cocked and to impact the breech section 2 upon opposite sides of the slot 4 to produce a, loud noise. A transverse pin ll extending through a central block It! on said bar 8 and into the breech section 2 fixes the percussion bar 8 to said section.
A combined cocking and trigger plate l3 of substantially T shape is pivotally and slidably mounted, as presently described, in said breech section 2 and slot 4, below the percussion bar 8, for vertical rocking in opposite directions, respectively, and sliding in opposite directions in the plane of the gun into forward and rearward limits of movement, respectively. The mounting forsaid plate l3 comprises a longitudinal slot I 4 therein and a cross pin I5 extended through said slot M with its ends suitably anchored in the breech section 2. The combined cooking and trigger plate I3 comprises a pair of front and rear, right angled cocking dogs l6, H; a trigger grip l8 depending through the bottom of the slot 4, and a finger hole l9 therein forwardly of the trigger grip l8. The front and rear dogs I6, I! are spaced apart a distance slightly less than the length of the percussion bar 8 and arranged to abut the front and rear ends 9, ID of said bar a1- ternately, as will presently be clear.
Referring now to the operation of the described invention, when the combined cocking and trigger plate I3 is moved forwardly by means of the trigger grip I8 and finger hole l9 into its forward limit of movement as established by the slot and pin I4, I5, said plate is rocked counterclockwise, as viewed in Figure 1, to swing the front dog I6 upwardly in front of the front end of the percussion bar 8, and to position the rear dog l6 beneath and engaging the rear end I!) of said bar 8, the rocking movement being limited by engagement of the rear dog I! with the rear ledge I. By rearward pull exerted against the trigger grip l8, the front dog I6 is caused to abut the front end of the percussion bar 8 and then swing downwardly against the front ledge 6 to release said front end of the bar. During this operation, and until release occurs, the rear dog l1 flexes the rear end III of said bar 8 upwardly into cocked position, as shown in Figure 2. As soon as release occurs, the plate l3' under the pull on the same slides rearwardly until the rear dog I! moves from under the rear end ID of said bar 8, whereupon said end 10 reacts downwardly out of cooked position, impacts the top of the breech section 2 and produces a loud noise. By pushing forwardly on the trigger grip It, or in other words, plate 13, the described operation is reversed to cause cocking of the front end 9 of the percussion bar and the subsequent release thereof by the front dog Hi, all in a manner which, it is believed, will be clear.
As will now be seen, the device is double acting and cannot be accidentally cocked so as to impair its operation, and is well adapted to rapidly produce loud sounds resembling that of a cartridge being fired. As will also be apparent, the inven- 1. In a toy gun, a breech barrel section having a longitudinal through slot therein, a percussion bar fixed in said slot to extend along the top of said section and having front and rear ends flexible upwardly into cocked position for reaction downwardly against said section to produce a loud sound, and manipulative means for flexing said ends of the bar into cocked position and releasing the same alternately.
2. In a toy gun, a breech barrel section having a longitudinal through slot therein, a percussion bar fixed in said slot to extend along the top of said section and having front and rear ends flexible upwardly into cocked position for reaction downwardly against said section to produc a loud sound, and-manipulative means for flexing said ends of the bar into cocked position and releasing the same alternately comprising a combined cocking and trigger plate pivotally and slidably mounted in said slot.
3. In a toy gun, a breech barrel section having a longitudinal through slot therein, a percussion bar fixed in said slot to extend along the top of said section and having front and rear ends flexible upwardly into cocked position for reaction downwardly against said section to produce a loud sound, and manipulativ means for flexing said ends of the bar into cocked position and releasing the same alternate comprising a combined cocking and trigger plate pivotall and slidably mounted in said slot, and including a pair of front and rear dogs for coaction with aid front and. rear ends of said bar to cock and release the same.
4. Ina toy gun, a breech barrel section having a longitudinal through slot therein, a percussion bar fixed in said slot to extend along the top of said section and having front and rear ends flexibl upwardly into cocked position for reaction downwardly against said section to produce a loud sound, and manipulative means for flexing said ends of the bar into cocked position and releasing the same alternately comprising a combined cooking and trigger plate pivotally and slidably mounted in said slot, and including a pair of front and rear do s-for coaction with said front andrear ends of said bar to cock and release the same, said slot having front and rear ledges therein for coaction with said dogs to limit pivotal movement of said plate.
