OmRL/ss SEAMAN ATTORNEX Patented June 19, 1945 UNI TED STA -Es PATENT FFlC E 2378,730 SEWING MACHINE ATTACHMENT Charles"Seaman, Jamaica Estates, NiYI Applfic'ationApril 6, 1943,: Serial" No.- 481,971 18 Claims (01. 112-214) This invention relates to 'sewingmachines and.
particularly to sewing machineattachments:
Prior to this invention, when two or'more plies,
formed of a single "fabric or superposed f-abrics;
were fed'through the stitching'position-of asewing machine'fo'r the'purposeof forming a hem 'or seam respectively, the upper ply was not fed at the same rate as the lower'p-ly' which was-in en'- gagement withthefeeddogs. Frequently,as a' consequence, the lower ply" Was gathered or puckered more-0r less 'h'apha'zar'dly. This 'haphazard gathering 'or puckering is-highly undesirable.
In the aforementioned'prionart practice, it was essential for the operator 'to manuallycontrol the feeding of the material to be hemmedand at all'times carefully and visually observe the folding arid stitchingoperation. If theoperation were not so observed, an irregular'row of stitches and also sometimes varying widths'o-f hem, in addition to'the gathering'previously men.-
tioned, would 'b'e obtained. As a consequence, a
blind individual-ocular not be a successful operator on such work;
An object of this invention is a sewing'm'achine an attachment of the typ'epreviouslymentioned which may be quickly rendered-inoperative in the event it is'desirecl'not'to entirely remove'the-attachment' ir'om the-sewing machine.-
Otherobjects will become apparent from the following complete description" of the invention.
In general, the objects of one phaseofthis' invention' are obtained byproviding-meansto engage and 'feed'the topply of a plurality of plies of "material in the travel thereof to the stitching position at sub-stantiallythe'same linear rate of speed as the lowermost ply is fedbythe feeddogs, Other ob'jects of the inventionare achieved by providing means to "disposethegoods in position for stitching-by merely h'andling'the goods without requiring actualobservance thereof. The means =for feedin-g the top ply comprises-a roll positioned in' advance of the' presser-foot: The:
roll is -'adjustably mounted On an arm '"adjustably or loweredwhenthe=presser foot is raised'or-lowered respectively. Because ofthe manner: in which the armr-carryingitheroll is, mounted on the presser--foot'-bar; th roll maybe raised or lowered as desired, independent of the presser:
foot" bar. Theutopi ply-engaging-roll. is driven by means driven from the pulley: end @of 'thesma chine, as willbe more fully described: hereinafter.-
In the preferred embodiment -.of the invention; there is also/provided a' roll at'the' rear: of thehead =and cooperating with. thework support [to engage=and feed the'materiali-after it hasleft thestitching position.- The rollat the rear-ofithe work support is, as will behereaftenmorelfully, explained, also driven fromthe pulley;endi of :the machine;
In advance. of the stitchingnposition, there. is providedv means ,to dispose the goods .in position. for stitching. Thisrneans is provided with a guide whereby, when the raw edgevoffth e goods isman-v ually disposed to abut said guide, the goods .will be properly positionedfor stitching; The guideis so constructedthat the vp-ositioningofv the raw edge of the goods can be expeditiously and cf.- fectively accomplished. solely by the hand without the necessity of .visually observing the same. Thus, the machine can be successfully operated even by a blind individual.
It will be apparent'from the description that the invention can be applied to the-stitching together by a single or multiple-needle machine of a plurality of plies formed of the same or' different materials, the plies being obtainedbyfolding or superimposition of the goods; For convenience and brevity, the invention will be specifically illustrated and described in connection with producing a'hem in which the raw'edge is concealed and preferably also secured between a top and bottom ply obtained'by folding the-goods.

Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals designate like parts, the reference numeral I6 designates a sewing machine head carried on a base l2. At one end, the head I is provided with a needle bar l4 which carries a needle I6. The needle bar I4 is reciprocated by means including a driving shaft [5 which is provided with a pulley H3 in driving relationship thereto. The pulley I8 is driven by a belt from any suitable driving means (not shown). The head In is also provided with a presser foot bar 24 which carries a presser foot 26, which cooperates with feed dogs 28 operated in the usual manner by a four-motion feed drive mechanism (not shown) and passing through slots 30 of a cover plate 32. The presser foot bar 24 can be elevated and lowered by means (not shown) through the manual actuation of the presser foot lever 36. It is to be noted that the needle bar l4 and presser foot bar 24 are on one end of the head [6 and that the pulley l8 and the drive 26 therefor are on the opposite end of the sewing machine head. It will further be observed that the details of the machine thus far described are those of a standard single-needle sewing machine.
In the embodiment shown (see Figure 6), a
fabric 38 is rolled to form a two-ply material, the two plies, for purposes of illustration. being designated by the reference numerals 46 and 42. The raw edge of the ply 42 is then rolled inwardly and disposed intermediate the two plies 40 and 42 to constitute a ply 44, in which condition the goods is fed through the path of travel of the needle l6 for stitching.
The fabric 38 is folded into position for stitching, as above described, by means of a folder 46 disposed in advance of the presser foot. The folder 46 is provided with an arm 48, which is carried on an arm pivotally mounted at 56 on a support 52 secured to the base 12 by means of screws 54. In Figure 1, the folder designated in full lines illustrates the folder in operative position; and the folder illustrated in dotted lines illustrate the folder in inoperative position. The folder is secured in position by means of the screws 55 cooperating with the slots 56 and holes (not shown) in the support 52. A pin 51 serves to engage the arm 48 and constitute a stop therefor. To move the folder 46 into inoperative position, the screws 55 are disengaged from the holes in the support 52 and the arm 46 is moved in the appropriate direction about the pivot 56.
The folder 46 is provided with an edge guide control 60 adjacent a curved depression 6|, for
reasons which Will become apparent hereafter.
In operation, the goods 38 is manually folded to form the plies 46 and 42 and, in this condition,
fed into the mouth of the folder 46. The lower ply 40 is fed into the mouth, as at 62, and the top ply 42 is positioned on the top of the folder and manually adjusted so that the raw edge thereof i in abutting relationship to the edge guide 66.
The folder 46 is of a construction which will roll the raw edge of the original ply 42 and dispose it. as a ply 44, intermediate the top and bottom plies, as above described and as shown in Figure 6.
At the exit end of the folder, there is provided a tongue or guide 63, over which the folded material is fed in its travel from the folder 46 to and through the stitching position. As shown in the drawings, the guide 63 terminates in close proximity to the presser foot 26.
A roll 66 is disposed in cooperative relationship with the tongue 63 and is adapted to engage and feed the top ply 42 at a linear speed substantially equal to the feed of the lower ply 46 by the feed dogs 28. The roll 66 is rotatably mounted on the lower horizontal member 61 of an arm 68, the upper horizontal member 69 of the arm being rotatably secured in a block 16 adjustably and securely mounted on the presser foot bar 24. The roll 66 is provided with a pulley 12 whereby, upon rotation of said pulley 12, the roll 66 will be rotated. In the specific form shown, the arm 68 for the roll 66 is formed of a single member bent into a form having the lower member 61 and the upper member 69 connected by a vertical member.
The roll 66 is positioned in cooperative relationship with th guide 63 and particularly the forward end thereof is in close proximity to the presser foot. As shown in the drawings (Figure 1), one end of the roll 66 is substantially in alignment with the short member of the presser foot, and the toe of the long member of the presser foot is in a vertical plane which is substantially tangent to or slightly passes through the roll. The roll 66 will also be raised or lowered upon raising or lowering-of the presser foot bar 24. The roll 66 can be raised or lowered with respect to the guide 63 by adjusting the position ofthe block 10 on the presser foot bar 24. The roll 66 can also be adjusted transversely of the guide 63 by positioning the roll on the member 61. A shown in Figure 2, a member H, secured to the horizontalmember 69, is provided with projection 13 and 15 which cooperate with a pin 19. In operative position, th projection 13 is in engagement with the pin 19 and maintained in that position by the tension of an elastic belt 13. Upon rotary movement of the member 69 in the block 10, the roll 66 is moved toinoperative position independent of the presser foot bar 24. In inoperative position, the projection 15 is in engagement with the pin 19 and so maintained by the belt 18.
The roll 66 may be formed of any suitable material, and, in the event the material of which it is formed does not have sufiicient tractive force, the latter may be imparted thereto in'any convenient manner. A hard rubber roll and a cork roll are illustrative examples of rolls which will give satisfactory results.
In the embodiment shown in the drawings and now being described, there is provided a roll 14 formed of any suitable material and provided with a tractive surface, such as cork. This roll 14 i positioned to the rear of the stitching position and is so disposed that it will engage the stitched material after leaving the stitching position, preferably at the seam thereof, and in cooperation with the work support (base of machine, table, etc.) will feed the material across the work support. The peripheral speed of the roll 14 is substantially equal to the feeding speed of the feed dogs 28.
The roll 14 is secured to a shaft '16 rearwardly of the head and extending transversely of the work support, which shaft, as previousl mentioned, is driven from the pulley end of the machine. It is to be noted that a pulley TI is secured to the shaft 16 and which, by means of a belt 18 formed of an elastic material, such as rubber, drives the pulley 12, thereby imparting rotary motion to the roll 66.
