HAMMOCK Filed Dec. 1a, 1942 2 She'ets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR BY @W ATTORNEY Patented June 12, 1945 UNITED" STATIES'V'PATEN I I: f HAMMOCK Harry Robertson Dillon, Richmond, Va. Application ec mber 18, 1942, Serial No. 469.7140 s 7 claims. (01. -422) V invention relates to hammocks and the like constructed in a network manner. Y
One of the objects of this invention is the provision of a hammock provided with a plurality, of
links interlocked in such a manner astoretard raveling and limit actuation of said links.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an adjustable hammock.
A'further object of this invention is the l rovision of a plurality of links, bands, circles or loops secured to one another and interwoven. so as to forma network for hammocks.v
Astill further object is the methodof securing together a plurality of links or loops to; form a j material for use in connection with 'ashammock or other useful articles. I I
. Other objects and features will more'ffu lly appear from the following description and accomspanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plane broken view of the invention; Fig 2 a distorted schematic top plan view;
Fig. 3 a transverse cross sectional view taken along lines 3-3 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 a transversecross sectional :view along lines .4--4 Of'Fig- Z...
Referring to the drawings .a hammock I consists of a head. .bar 2 to which are respectively secured guy lines 3-4. that pass through a tool; bar 5 and are secured bycleats 6. tozaringl'.
and such interlocking "method. is continued throughout the desired Width of the body. I Transverse members are secured toguy lined by turning endliiik' so asfto form an eyelet through which guyline l i passed to provide securing means of said transverse members.
longitudinal member 9;'while link 15 of the adjacent longitudinal member 9 is, disposed in the central opening of the'link adjacentto link I9 'of the transverse member Iii." Thereforawhen The body or bed 8 of the hammock consists of a plurality of longitudinal and transverse or warp and woof members 9-40 respectively comprised of links interlocked with one another as hereinaiter more fully explained. 1 1,
The longitudinal and transversemeinbers consist of links interlocked in series fashion. The
links'are preferably constructed of flexible material such as twine, cord or the like.
The body of the hammock is constructed as follows: a plurality of longitudinal links l2 are respectively secured to the head bar and respectively held in spaced relation to one another by filler links I3. Longitudinal links I4 are respectively interlocked with links I2 and links I5 with links M and so on throughout the desired length of the body.
Links I2 and filler links I3 are limited in movement by a series of lock link I6, etc., as follows: lock link I6 is secured to guy line 3 and registers with filler link I3. Lock link I! (see Fig. 3) interlocks link I6 and filler link I3 and this interl-ock ing method is continued throughout the desired width of the body.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 4 the transverse members ID are constructed as follows: Link I8 is secured to guy line 3 and interlock with link I9 the longitudinal or transverse members pass through the links in' alternative fashion their lateral movement is Figs.'23-4. h
Itisalso obvious from the'foregoing description and accompanying drawings that the longitudinal and transverse members alternatively and respec tively pass over and through one'another' so as to provide a substantial continuousinterlocking means which tends: to. prevent raveling.
A plurality of c 1ews or-cords' 2 Ipassthrougha ring 22 and are secured to said head bar, and thereby provides a self-adjusting feature (see Fig. 2) since said clews' may be lengthened or shortened with respect to said head bar and ring.
Referring to Fig. 1 the longitudinal members and locking members 23 are secured as follows: End links 2 3 c)? said longitudinal and locking members are grouped together'in a desired numher and turned so as t provide eyelets through which passes acontinuous adjustable clew or cord 25 secured in ring 1. Adjustable means 25 consists of links disposed upon and slidable on slow 2E and are provided-to lengthen or shorten said body with respect to-said ring and end. oi said longitudinal and locking members. It is to be understood that the foregoing description is one method of constructing the device and applicant is not to be limited in other 4 methods substantially employed within the scope of his invention.
limited; as is bvious' from It is understood that the basic links may be made of any material.
It is to be further understood that the method used in the interlocking of links may be employed in similar fashion in the construction of bath mats, cushions, drapes, sacking, hosiery, and metallic articles, such as netting and the like.
Having described this invention, what is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described consisting of a. plurality of longitudinal members respectively formed of links interlocked with each other in series fashion; each link having a central opening; a plurality of transvers members respectively formed of links interlocked with each. other in series fashion and each link having a central opening; said longitudinal members respectively passing over and through said transverse members in alternative fashion, and said transverse members respectively passing over and through said longitudinal members in alternative fashion.
2. A device of the character described consisting of ,a plurality of longitudinal aperturedmembers; a plurality of transverse apertured members; said longitudinal members respectively passing about and through the apertures of said transverse members; said transverse members respectivley passing about and throughthe apertures of said longitudinal members in alternate manher, and: elongated members to which the ends of said longitudinal and transverse members are secured.
3. A device of the character described consisting of a plurality of apertured longitudinal members each having one of its ends secured to a head bar, and the other of its ends secured to means engaging a ring; said means being held in spaced relation by a foot bar; a plurality of transverse apertured members each having its ends secured to respective guy lines connecting said head bar, foot bar and ring; said longitudinal and transverse members respectively passing over and through'the apertures of transverse and lonof links consecutive woof members, While the second or next succeeding warp member has its links passing alternately between and about the next succeeding row of corresponding links of said woof members, the construction being repeated to form a woven structure of any desired extent.
5. In a device of the character described, a plurality of warp and woof members, each member comprising a plurality of links, each link having an aperture adjacent each end and being folded upon itself to form a bight and substantially parallel arms, each bight passing through the superposed apertures Of the next succeeding link, to form a chain-like member, said members being interwoven so that regularly-recurring links of each warp member, pass between the arms of respective links in a corresponding row of links of said woof members, while the remaining links of said warp members have the corresponding links of the respective woof members, passing between their arms.
6. In a structure of the character described, first and second warp members, first and second woof members, each of said members comprising a. series of links, each link comprising a length of material looped at its ends and foldedupon itself to form a bight and superposed loop portions, each bight passing through the-loops of the next succeeding link, to form a chain-like member,
one link of said first warpqmember passing between said loop portions of one link of said first woof member, the next succeeding linkof said first warp member having its said portions passing on opposite sides of a link of said secondwoof member, and one link of said second warp-meni- 40 time of the next succeeding link of said second woof member, said construction being repeatedto form a woven structure of any extent desired.
7. In a device of the character described, a plurality of links, each link having it ends apertured and being bent upon itself to form a bight portion and superposed arms, each bight portion passing through the apertures of the next succeeding link to form warp and woof members, said members being interengaged so that alterirate links of each warp member, pass between and about a corresponding row of links of said woof members, the construction being repeated to form a woven structure .of any desired extent.
