Description

- APRON Fiied March 1, 1943 IN V EN TOR.
Patented June 5, 1945 .UNTED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,377,747 i e APRON` Benjamn Berkowitz, Philadelphian. Application March 1, 1943, ScrialNo. 477,549 (ci. 2-48) 1 Claim.
My invention relates to an apron of the type shown in my Patent No. 1,579,629, wherein a tunnel for retainingor protecting the strings of the apron during laundering operations were embodied with the apron.
My present 4invention relates to providing two pockets at each side of the apron whereby a pencil or other suitable marking device may be retained. The apron embodying my invention also contains side tunnels whereby the strings may be inserted within the tunnels during the laundering operation. i
It is any object of my inventionito provide a strings I8, I8 are permitted to remain within the tunnels in lapped relationship upon the with` plurality of pockets along the upper side edges of the apron which does not entail the use of additional material in manufacturing the apron.
Another object of my invention is to provide in an apron embodying side tunnels, a pocket at each side edge of theapron whereby the pockets may be made very easily during the manufacturing process of the apron.
Other objects of my invention are to provide an improved device of the character described, of simple and economical construction and of a sturdy construction.`
With the above and related-objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully understood from the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a rear view of an apron embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged rear view of a portion of the apron pockets embodying my invention.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig, 2. e i
Referring now to the drawing, I show an apron, generally designated as A, having an integral skirt I and bib l2 has tapered side edges I4, I4 converging toward of fabric, wherein the bib I2 operations.4
` As each string is separately housed there is no danger of entanglement with one another and no bulk impeding laundering or mangling is formed `When the apron has been` at any one place, laundered the strings may be readily extracted from the tunnels by pulling thereon with the 1ingers. i
A'n end 24 of the bib portion I2 being turned to overlap the bib portion I2 forms the tunnel I 6. The end of the neck band .22 is inserted between the overlapped' portions I2 and 24 of the bib so i that two rows of vertical stitches 26, 28`through the top in order to properly fit the wearer so that the wearer may have free arm movement.
Tunnels I6, I6 along the tapered edges I4, I4 are formed preferably by hemming over such edges as in Fig. 3. The tunnels I6, adapted to receiveholding strings I8, I8 during the laundering of the garment extend from near the neck band 22 to approximately the waist line of the apron. The holding strings I8, I8 are attached, by stitching, adjacent and within the lower open ends of the tunnels.
A` exible rod (not shown) has' on the ends thereof open eyes over which the strings I 8, I8
may be looped and pushed into the respective tunnels I6, I 6 indicated on the drawing; the
the neckband 22 and' the bib I2 and its end 24 hold the neckband 22, the bib, and the bib end 24 i together. i i 20` It can be seen that a pencil pocket 30 is formed between the end of the neckband 22 and the overlapping portion 24 of the e venient pencil pocket 32 is formed between the neckband 22 and the bib I2. The lower ends of each of the pockets 36 and 32 is sealed by a horizontal row of stitches 34 whereby the pencil or other analogous article inserted in either of the pockets 3D, 32 will be supported inv a definite position.
Although I have described four pockets as being constructed in eachlapron I may desire to use one, two or three pockets only.
Although my invention has been described in considerable detail the description is illustrative rather than limiting, since the invention may be variously embodied, and the scope of the invention is to be 'determined as claimed.
I claim as my invention:v e
Aj fabric apron having a pencil pocket and an apron 4string tunnel therein comprising a body portion, an overlapping side edge of the apron at each side of said body portion; a, neck-band `having an end lying between the body 'portion and the overlapping side edge; a row of stitches holding the side edge of said neck-band, the edges of said over-lapping side edge and `the body portion of said apron together; a second row of stitches substantially parallel to said first named row of stitches and holding the other edge of said neck-band to the overlapping edge of said apron body; `holding a portion of the neck-band end and a portion of the overlapping side edge together to define the bottom of the pencil pocket, and an apron string connected to the end of said apron` tunnel.
