EDGE-TRIMMING MACHINE FOR BOOT AND SHOE SOLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,671, dated February 15, 18.81. Application filed December 31, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZOTIQUE BEAUDRY, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts,ha've invented certain new and useful Improvements in Edge-Trimming Machines for Boot and Shoe Soles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a certain formation of the edge-trimming knife; in mechanism to carry the knife forward and backward across the edge of the solo; in the suspension of the stock or handle of the trimming-knife; and in other details, all of which are hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying plates of drawings the present invention is illustrated.
Figure 1 is a part side elevation and'a part central vertical longitudinal section 5 Fig. 2, a cross-section on line 00 m, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, ahorizontal section on line 1 y, Fig. l Fig. 4, an end view; Fig. 5, a side elevation; Fig. 6, a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. 1; Figs. 7, 8, 9, and 10 views in detail of the edge-trimming knife Figs. 11, 12, 13,14, and 15, views in detail, Figs. 13 and 14 more particularly being made to illustrate the application of this edge-trimmer to the edge of a boot or shoe sole to be trimmed by it.
In the drawings, a represents a knife for trimming the outer edge of a boot and shoe sole, and b its cutting-edge, shaped and operating as will be hereinafter particularly described.
a c is the shank or stock of knife or, which shank is fork-shaped, and is secured by screwbolt d and nut f to the end of the flat side of a bar, A, arranged to slide along the length of a guideway inside of a casing or stock, B, which exteriorly at one portion is shaped to be conveniently grasped by the hand, and at its end h for the cutting-edge b of the knife to to project therefrom, and otherwise to carry the various portions of the mechanism constituting the present improved edge-trimmer. This knife-carrying bar A has a frictional roller, 0, which lies within a peripheral camslot, D, of a drum, E, arranged to turn on a central shaft, F, secured at each end by screwbolts 1, one of which passes loosely through an ear-piece, m, of the stock B, and both screw into the ends of the shaft. This shaft F is parallel to the length of and above the knifebar A, and the cam-drum E has a grooved pulley, G, for receiving a belt to connect it with any suitable driving mechanism or power.
H is a square frame, which is suspended by two of its parallel sides, at n, and turning for a center upon the retaining screw-bolts lfor the shaft F, and which at its other two parallel sides, p 19, has the arms 0 0 of a yoke, J, pivoted to it, which yoke terminates in arod, K, which is in a plane coincident with the axial plane of the shaft F, carrying drum E and pulley G, and that of the central line of knife-carrying bar A. The yoke-rod K projects through the open slot L of a vertical frame, M, fixed to the sides at of suspended square frame H, and it has a loose collar, N, on it, which is pressed by a coiled spring, 0, around the rod K to a hearing at and against the face 1" at each side of the open slot L, and which bearing-faces have a curvilinear direction coincident with the pivoted points of the yoke J, hereinbefore referred to. The upper end of this yoke-rod K is suspended in any suitable manneras, for instance, by aball-and-socket joint-in a vertical position, so that the stock or handle B may be swung around in a horizontal plane and be swung forward and backward in a vertical plane.

Q Q is a guard or guide, made in two parts, one part, Q, after adjustment unyielding, and the other part, Q after adjustment yielding, and both secured to the head I of the stockB just in advance of the open end h of the stock at which the edge-trimming knife a projects.
R is a knife secured to head I of stock B, and t the cutting-edge thereof, which cuttingedge is situated relatively to the cutting action of the edge-trimming knife a, to trim the face of the sole lying between the edge of the sole trimmed by the knife to and the upper of the boot or shoe, and it and the two-part guard or guide Q, Q are constructed and arranged in a similar manner to the trimming-knife and the guard or guide shown and described in the schedule annexed to the Letters Patent of the United States dated May 6,1879, No. 215,189,
and operate the guard as a bearing against the upper of the boot or shoe along and in the line of the inner sole, entering between the upper and the outer sole and the trimming-knife R, to trim the face of the outer sole which lies between the upper and the edge of the outer sole, all as particularly shown in Figs. 13 and 14 of the drawings.
T is a pad at one end of an arm, U, hung upon a fulcrum, u, of the stock B, and provided at its upper end, 12, with a spiral spring, V, hung to a fixed arm, WV, of stock B, so as to swing the pad toward the guards Q Q and to exert a yielding and elastic pressure upon the pad. This pad T is below the cuttingplane of the edge-trimming knife a, and in the operation of trimming by the said knifeitbears and lies against the treading-face of the sole. (See Fig. 14.) As more clearly shown in Fig. 4., the pad T is made quite broad and bears mostly on its two outeredges. It is made wide and extended beyond two sides of the knife, and during operation it will have not only a yielding action perpendicular to the treadingface of the sole of the boot being trimmed, but also, by reason of its broad bearing-surface, keeps the tool squarely to its work.
Through the connection of the knife-carrying bar A with driving mechanism, as hereinbefore described, said bar is given a rectilinear reciprocating movement in its guideway, and thus the knife a, if the edge of the sole to a boot or shoe be presented to it, is made to travel forward and backward across the same, and thereby to cut by its edge b the edge of the sole. In this presentation of the edge of the sole the treading-face of the sole is against the pad T, the guards Q Q enter between the upper and the outer sole and lie or bear against the upper at the line of the inner sole, and in this way the sole-edge is presented at all parts to the action of the knife by a proper handling of the boot or shoe, either directly with the hand or indirectly through a suitable carrier or other mechanism, while at the same time the stock or handle B, herein described, is raised, depressed, and swung around and otherwise operated, as may be necessaryfrom time to time, to keep the guards Q, Q? in their said bearing on the upper, and through the upper on the inner sole, and between the upper and the outer sole, and the knife to its work on the edge of the outer sole.
The stockB,byits suspension within aframe, H, and by the suspension of such frame within a yoke, J, as herein described, is capable of being manipulated by the operator as follows: first, to raise and lower the cutting-edge of the edge-trimmin g knife, and, second, to roll or rock such knife-edge in and across its width on the edge of the sole; and by its suspension through the rod K of yoke, such as herein describedto wit, a ball-and-socket joint, which is not shown, as it forms no part of this invention-is capable of being manipulated by the operator as follows: to swing the cuttingedge of the edge-trimming knife forward and backward in a vertical plane and in a circular direction in a horizontal plane. Each of the above-described movements of the cuttingedge to the edge-trimmer is independent of the other movements, and the other parts of the trimmer at work or bearing on the boot or shoe which is being operated upon are moved in conjunction with the said movements of the cutting-edge b of knife 11. as the stock B is handled to cause the same.
The edge-trimming knife to is adjusted on its carrier A, so that its cutting-ed go, in its movement over the edge of the sole, will pass beyond the corner of the sole which is toward and nearer to the upper; and, in this connection, the faces of the guards Q Q which are toward the knife are shaped so that the knife can so pass by such corner of the sole without coming in contact with the guards Q Q for instance, as shownin Figs. 13 and 14-which consist in having each face set back from the said corner of the edge of the sole, as shown at W, Fig. 14.
The cutting-edge b of the edge-trimmer a rounds in the direction of its width-that is, from one side to the other (see Fig. 9)and this presents a cutting-edge like the cutting edge to a chisel-gouge. This convex or curved cutting-edge has its one side, f in advance of its other side, f and this latter side, f, is curved upwardly, as shown. (See Fig. 9 more particularly.) This upward-curved portion f of the edge-trimming knife cuts into the sole for a portion of the outermost portion of the width of the edge of the sole between its treading-face and the upper, and the forwardprojecting portion f of the knife finishes the cutting of the sole-edge-that is, it cuts the edge of the sole for the remainder of its width; and the knife is so adjusted on its carryingbar that in the forward and backward play of the knife across the edge of the sole its said forward-projectin g part f always is within the thickness of the edge of the sole. (See Fig. 13.) Between the forward projection, f and curved portion f 3 of knife-the cuttin g-edge to the edge-trimming knife-such cutting-edge inclines from the one to the other.
By making the cutting-edge of the edgetrimming knife of a curvilinear shape across its width, as described, in rocking such cutting-edge upon the edge of the sole no corners to the cutting-edge are presented to gouge or cut into the edge of the sole.
The arrangement of the bearing-collar N on the guideway L and its spring 1? steadies the handling of the stock, while at the same time it allows the stock to be freely raised and lowered.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with the stock or handle B and the longitudinally -reciprocating knife a, herein described, of the broad yielding pad T, extending beyond the sides of the knife, and arranged to bear against the tread ing-face of the sole while the said knife plays across and trims its edge, whereby the said pad, While having a yielding action perpendicular to the treading-face of the sole, also affords a broad bearing-surface, and thus keeps the tool squarely to its Work, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the stock or handle and the reciprocating knife a, of the guard Q, having its lower edge shaped, as described, to stand between the inner margin of the sole, below the corner of said sole, and the upper, and in contact with both sole and upper, and its body portion above its lower edge set outward in a different plane from said edge, to permit the longitudinally-reelprocatin g knife to play beyond said edges, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 3. The edge-trimmin g knife a, having a curved or rounded cutting-edge, b, a forward projection, f and an upward projection, f substantially as described.
4. The combination of the stock B, the longitudinally-reciprocating bar A, carrying at its forward edge a trimming-knife, and the drum E, having the cam-groove embracing a pin projecting from said bar, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the stock B, frame H, yoke J, having the upward projection K, and the slotted frame M, embracing said upward projection, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the stock B, frame H, slotted pivoted frame M, pivoted yoke J, having the upward projection K, passing through the slot in said frame, and the adjustable s pring-pressed collar N, bearing upon the top of said frame, substantially as described.
