HAND FIRE EXTINGUISHER Filed May 14. 1942 Patented'May 8, 1945 Stewart Boal, Chicago, Laboratories, Inc.,

` 1 claim. (o1. 169-31) Thls/ invention relates .to a portable fire extinguisher using carbon dioxide' as the extinguishing agent, and which is so designed and constructed that the extinguisher may-.be` carried, directed, and operated' by one hand, leaving the vother hand entirely free.
One of the objects of my invention is to produce a xed self-directing outlet as an integral part of the device and located in alignment with the thumb-actuated trigger and handle so that the extinguishing fluid may be accurately directed and controlled by the use of but one hand.
Another object is to provide for bettercontrol of the direction and quantity of the extinguishing fluid by mounting the trigger directly over the handle so that it may be readily actuated bydownward pressure of the thumb which would be in its natural position when the hand grasps the handle. I
Another object is to provide a horn for controlling the proper admixture of the discharged carbon dioxide with a minimum entrapment of air, and means for mounting the horn in a fixed position upon the extinguisher and opposite the handle or grip and the trigger.
Further objects are to provide a construction i of maximum simplicity, efciency, economy and ease of assembly and operation, and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently possessed thereby. l
The invention further resides in the vconstruction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the same is the purpose of accurately controlling the liberating mechanism, a horn, one end of which surrounds the nozzle and which is anchored in operating position by the nozzle itself.
Referring more particularly to the novel illustrative embodiment disclosed in the drawing, the numeral I represents the usual tubular or cylinder container having a threaded opening 2 at the top of the cylinder. A valve assembly 3 made of brass or other suitable material is provided with a threaded portion 4 which screws into the threaded opening 2. The valve assembly or housing 3 contains a valve mechanism comprising a plunger 5 having a detachable valve 5a carrying a packing ring 6 or washer, which is adapted to be raised and form sealing engagement with the valve seat 1. The valve is designed to be held in closed position by an expansible spring 8 and the pressure of the carbon dioxide until the plunger 5 is manually depressed by a downward motion on the trigger 9. Trigger 9 is attached to a lever I0 which is pivoted at II. Intermediate the pivot II and the trigger 9 is an aperture I2 forreceiving a locking pin I3, which when in place, prevents the lever from being suiiiciently depressed to actuate the plunger 5 and unseat the valve. It will thus be seen that when the pin I3' is removed and the trigger 9 is pushed downwardly, a downward pressure is exerted upon the plunger 5 which opens the valve and permits apassage of the uid upwards around the\ valve and out through the nozzle aperture I4 which connects through adjoining openings with interior of the susceptible of modincation and change,l and comprehends other details, arrangements of parts, features and constructions without departing from the spiritof the invention. a
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side Yview of the fire extinguisher.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in vertical cross-section of the upper portion of the fire extinguisher showing the operating mecha- 1 nism and mounting of the horn in xed position upon the extinguisher.
I have embodied -the foregoing objects in a construction which affords an easily portable nent position and readily noticeable to make the aiming obvious, aI convenient thumb-actuated Y, trigger or lever immediately over the handle for valve assembly. The handle I5 is screwed into the housing 3 at an opening I6 in the housing, which opening is placed at a suitable distance directly below the trigger 9 to facilitate oper--v ation. A fixed stationary horn I1 is positioned on the housing directly opposite to or in alignment with the' handle I5, and is so designed as tol be held in place by screwing the cap or nozzle I 8 over the nozzle connector I 9 against an in turned an'ge 20 on the base o f the horn and thereby anchoring the horn in fixed position.` It will thus be seen that when the cap or nozzle I8 is screwed tightly against the inwardly projecting annular flange of the horn I1 that the horn is held in a fixed position and is in a straight line with the handle I5 and the trigger 9.
Having thus described the invention,.I claim: A one hand operation portable re extinguisher comprising a cylinder adapted to containv carbon dioxide under pressure, a valve for releasing the contents of the cylinder, a nozzle and a rigid 2 2,375,615 and stationary horn in xed position for directcharge of the contents when the trigger is deing and controlling the discharge of said conpressed and means comprising a. locking pin extents, a handle for carrying the fire extinguishtending through said trigger for preventing acer, said handle being located diametrically oppo-A eidental displacement of said trigger when said v site said horn and nozzle, a thumb-actuate 5 valve isclosed. trigger located immediately above said handle.
