HOLD-DOWN CLIP FOR CARTON CLO SURE FLAPS Filed NOV. 1, .1943
Patented May 8, 1945 HOLD-DOWN CLIP FOR CARTON CLOSURE FLAPS William H. Lepp, Afton, Mo., assignor to Diagraph-Bradley Stencil Machine Corporation, St. Louis, Mo., a corporation of Missouri Application November 1, 1943, Serial No. 508,474
1 Claim.
The conventional shipping carton has closure,
flaps at the upper edges of its side walls that extend inwardly, upwardly or outwardly before the carton is closed and thus interfere with the packing thereof. The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and economical, quick attachable and detachable clip for temporarily holding the closure or sealing flaps of such cartons down close to the outside faces of the side walls thereof where they are out of the way of the packer. The invention consists in the closure flap hold-down clip hereinafter'described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a comer portion of a shipping carton provided with a clip embodying my invention for holding down the closure flaps of the two adjacent side walls alongside the outer faces thereof,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1: and
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line 3-8 in Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawing, my invention is illustrated in connection with a conventional shipping carton comprising side walls A having flaps 13 along the upper edges thereof that are adapted to be bent inwardly one over the other to close or seal the carton. For convenience in packing the carton, it is desirable to fold the top closure or sealing flaps B down on the outside of the carton so that easy access may be had to the carton by the packer.
According to the present invention, the closure or sealing flaps B of two adjacent side walls A of the carton are held down on the outer sides of said walls adjacent to the corner formed thereby by means of a wire clip C. As shown in the accompanying drawing. the closureflap hold-down of said hooks incline inwardly and downwardly towards the said straight outer branches thence outwardly and downwardly away therefrom and terminate slightly below the level of the branches l in rounded ends 6.
In use, the closure flaps B of two adjacent side walls A of the carton that is to be packed are folded down on the outer sides of said walls 1 and the clip 0 is positioned over the corner of clip 0 comprises two right angularly disposed horizontally diverging branches I connected by a horizontally ofl'set finger-grip or handle portlon in the form of an outstanding loop 2.v The diverging branches terminate at their remote sends in downwardly opening upstanding hooks 8 that are disposed on the sides of said branches opposite from the side on which the finger-grip the carton and moved downwardly to engage the hooks 5 over the respective walls and their downwardly folded flaps, thus holding said flaps close to said walls and out of the way of the packer. The outstanding loop 2 serves as an outstanding finger grip for use in attaching the clip to and removing it from the carton, while the reversely inclined portions of inner branches 5 of the hooks 3 limit the contact between said. branches and the side walls A of the carton to the knees 1 formed by such reversely inclined portions and thus enable said branches to bear resiliently against said walls. The flared open ends of the hooks 3 facilitate engagement there of with the carton; and these flared ends together with the rounded ends 6 of the outer branches of said hooks prevent tearing of the side walls of the carton when the clip is mounted thereon. The clips may be attached to each corner of the carton or at two diagonally opposite comers only thereof, depending on the length of the carton.
What I claim is:
A quick attachable and detachable wire clip for temporarily holding the downwardly folded closure flaps of a carton along the outer side faces of the two adjacent side walls thereof adjacent to the corner formed by said walls, said clip comprising a wire bent to form two angularly disposed branches adapted to extend from said comer one along the outer face of each of said downwardly folded closure flaps, upstanding downwardly opening hooks at the remote ends only of said branches adapted to straddle the respective side walls and their downwardly folded flaps, and an outstanding loop connecting adjacent ends of said branches and adapted to project outwardly from said corner far enough to provide a central handle portion foruse in attaching said clip to and removing from said carton.
