2 Claims.
Our invention relates to improvements in cutting apparatus, the principal object in view bein to provide simply constructed, inexpensive, portable apparatus for quickly and easily cutting sheet material such as commercially designated Transite, which is of a texture such that sawing of the same is impracticable and frequently results in irreparable injury to saws.
Other and subordinate objects are also com- Figure l is a view in perspective illustrating our improved cutting apparatus in its preferred embodiment,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section, drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 3 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a similar view in transverse section taken on the line l4 of Figure l, and
Figure 5 is another similar view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, in the preferred embodiment thereof, our improved cutting apparatus comprises an elongated, rectangular platform I, of any suitable size, embodying longitudinally extending, tongue and groove planks 2 suitably secured to and adapted to be supported by end and intermediate cross cleats 3, A, a pair of contiguous planks 2 being spaced apart in the longitudinal center of the platform 1 to provide a central, longitudinal slot 5, and said cleats being notched, as at 6, below said slot. A pair of angle iron bars I are mortised into the before mentioned contiguous planks 2, respectively, to extend down through the slot 5 and provide metal sides for the same. Screws 8 secure the bars I in place. The corner edges of the bars 1 form ribs 9 at the top of the slot 5 for a purpose presently seen. -A pair of spacing collars, on of which is shown at ID, are provided in the slot 5 between the bars 1 adjacent each end of the slot 5, with bolts extended through the same and said substantially oval shape, and extending lengthwise downwardly through the slot 5, and which is provided at its upper end with a fiat shank l6 extending obliquely from the head. A bifurcated handle bar I! straddles the free end of the shank l6 and is bolted thereto, as at Hi, to extend therefrom. Above and below the slot 5, which is to say the bars 1, the head I5 is provided with upper and lower pairs of aligned, lateral studs I9, 20 extending from opposite ides of said head. Intermediate th pairs of studs 19, 20 said head is provided with side bosses 2| fitting loosely between the bars 1. The shank l6, intermediate the head l5 and the handle bar I1, is provided with a toothed lower edge, the teeth 22 of which are pitched forwardly and are fiat faced, as best shown in Figure 5.
In using the described apparatus, the sheet 23 i placed on the platform I, as shown in dotted lines in Figure l. The described tool I4 is pulled along the slot 5 until the teeth 22 overlie the near edge of said sheet. The tool I4 is then rocked downwardly to force the teeth '22 through the sheet with the lower pair of stud 20 fulcruming against the lower edges l3 of the bars I. Said tool is then rocked upwardly with the upper pair of studs [9 fulcruming on top of the bars I to withdraw the lower edge or teeth 22 out of the cut, then pulled along the slot 5 to position the teeth 22 for another cutting operation and then again rocked downwardly, as previously described, to effect another cut in said sheet. The operations described are repeated until the sheet is completely, or partially, severed, as desired. The bosses 2| and the ribs 9 prevent the tool from wobbling sideways during operation thereof, the advantage of which will be clear.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of our invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within thescope of the appended claims.
What we claim is:
1. In apparatus of the class described, a platform structure comprising supporting cleats, said structure having a central slot therein extendin from side to side thereof, metal bars lining the sides of the slot, and a cutter tool including a handle, and a head slidable in said slot and adapted to be rocked vertically by said handle, and upper and lower pairs of studs on said head overlying and underlying'said bars, respectively.
sides of the slot, and a cutter tool including at.
handle, and a head slidable in said slot and adapted to be rocked vertically by said handle, and upper and lower pairs of studs on said head overlying and underlying said bars, respectively, for engagement with the bars to form fulcrum members during rocking of the head, said too] including a shank extending from the head and provided with a toothed cutting edge overlying said, slot, said teeth being fiat faced, and pitched 10 toward thetheadi BOBBIE Mi JAN SEN.
