My invention relates to railway traflic controlling; apparatus and more particularly to trackway apparatus for governing automatic train control devices.
Railway signal systems frequently employ train control or train stop apparatus, the tracktherein a stretch of railway track. through which traff c normally moves in the direction indicated way elements of which are controlled to a clear or a stop position in accordance with traffic conditions and which cooperate with train carried elements for controlling train carried apparatus in accordance withthe condition of the trackw-ay element. 1 When a train is to move in the direction reverse tothe. normal direction of traffic, means must be provided to insure that the train contrcltrackway elements assume an inoperative condition.
One object of my invention is the provision of railway traflic controlling apparatus incorporating improved directional means to insure movement of train control trackway devices to an inoperative. position when a train is moving over the associated. stretch of track in the reverse of the; normal direction of traflic.
A further object of the invention is to provide improved apparatus of the type described which is arranged so that control of the trackway train stops on movement of a train through the track stretch in' the reverse direction is effected without the. use of apparatus other than that which is required for the control of these devicesand of the. wayside signals on movement of a train through the. track stretch in the normal direction. i
Other objects of the invention andfeatures of novelty will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

As. hereinafter explained these signals, except signal [3S for section l 3T, are controlled to provide a two-block three-indication signaling system having a full block overlap. As illustrated in the drawing the signal includesa green lamp G which may be employed to indicate traffic conditions in advance of section I3T. The circuit of lamp G of signal its may be controlled by appropriate means well known in. the art, but the control of this lamp is not a part of this invention and has been omitted in order to simplify this disclosure.

Each train stop device has associated therewith contacts I8, I9 and 24 which are governed in accordance with the position of the arm of the device. The contacts I8 are controlled so as to be closed when and only when the associated trip-arm is in its lower or inoperative position, while each contact I9 is closed in all positions of the associated trip-arm except its lower or inoperative position, and each contact 24 is closed in all positions of the associated trip-arm except its raised or operative position.
Each track section is provided with a home relay designated H with an appropriate prefix, and a distant relay designated D with an appropriate prefix. The home relays H are of a type the contacts of which are slow to release. The relays H and D are controlled by the track relays and cooperate to control the wayside sig-' nals and the train stop devices in the manner hereinafter explained in detail.
The energy for operating the equipment other than the track relays is supplied from an appropriate source, not shown, the terminals of which are designated B and C in the drawing. Separate sources of energy may be provided at each signal location, in which event the common terminal C of the sources at various locations may be connected together by a common wire, not shown, or energy from a single source may be distributed throughout the track stretch by a transmission line, not shown.
The equipment is shown in the condition which it assumes when the track stretch is vacant and the lever K is in its position N in which it conditions the track stretch for movement of traffic in the normal direction.
As lever K is in its position N the lever contact 32 establishes the circuit of the red lamp R of signal I3SL to prevent entrance into the track stretch of trains moving in the reverse of the normal direction, while contact 34 establishes the circuit including front contact 38 of track relay I3TR for supplying energy to relay I3H, and interrupts the pick-up circuit of relay I 3D. Accordingly, relay I3H is picked up and its contact 28 additionally interrupts the circuit of, relay I3D, while energy is supplied to the winding of trip stop I3V over the circuit which includes front contact of relay I3TR, front contact 2| of relay I3H, and wire 22, and the arm of the trip stop I3V is held in its lower or inoperative position so that contacts I8 and 24 are closed and contact I9 is open. As contact of relay I3H is picked up, and as contact I9 of the trip stop is open, the supply of .energy to the red lamp R of signal I is out off, while energy is supplied over front contact 30 of relay IBH and trip contact iii to the yellow lamp Y of signal [33.
As section IZT is vacant track relay I2TR is picked up and its contact 26 establishes the circuit of relay I2D and energy is supplied to this relay over the circuit which includes front contact 20 of relay I3TR, front contact 2I of relay I3H, wire 22, trip contact 24, wire 25, and front contact 26 of relay I2TR.
As sections I2'I and I3T are vacant energy is supplied over front contact 31 of track relay I3'IR and front contact 38 of track relay IZTR to relay I2H so that its contacts are picked up so that energy is supplied over front contact 20 of relay I2TR, front contact 2I of relay [2H and wire 22 to the winding of trip stop I2V. The trip-arm of the device I2V, therefore, occupies its lower or n0n-tripping position and contacts I8 and 24 are closed, while contact I9 is open.
As relays I 2TB, I 2H and I2D are picked up energy is supplied to the green lamp G of signal IZS over front contact 40 of relay IZTR, front contact 36 of relay I2H, trip contact I 8, and front contact 4| of relay IZD.
At this time energy is supplied to relay IID over front contact 20 of relay I2TR, front contact 2| of relay I 2H, wire 22, trip contact 24, wire 25, and front contact 26 of track relay I ITR,
The equipment associated with signal IIS is identical with that associated with signal I 28, and at this time operates in the same manner as explained in detail in connection with signal I2S to cause signal IIS to provide its green or clear indication, to cause the arm of trip stop IIV to occupy its lower or non-tripping position, and to cause energy to be supplied to the distant relay for section HIT.
Operation of system on movement of a train through the stretch in the normal direction of traflic When a train moving in the normal direction of trafiic enters section IOT the track relay, not shown, for section IOT releases and its contact 26 (similar to contact 26 of relay IITR) connects wire 25 to terminal B of the source and thus establishes a stick circuit for trip stop I IV. This circuit includes wire 25 for section IOT, contact 24 of trip IIV, and wire 22, and provides means for maintaining the arm of the trip stop IIV in its lower or inoperative position when the train enters section IIT so that track relay II TR releases and its contact 20 interrupts the circuit controlled thereby for supplying energy to the winding of this trip stop.
When the train enters section HT and relay IITR releases its contact 26 interrupts the circuit of relay II D and establishes a stick circuit for trip stop I2V, while contact 40 of relay] I TR interrupts the circuit of the green lamp G and establishes the circuit of the red lamp R, of signal Us. In addition, contact 38 of relay I ITR interrupts the circuit of relay IIH, but the contacts of relay IIH are slow in releasing so contact 23 of relay III-I remains picked up and interrupts the stick circuit of relay I ID until after the contacts of relay IID release. This insures that contact 2'! of relay IID will interrupt the stick circuit for the relay before it can be established by contact 28 of relay III-I, and therefore insures that the contacts of relay IID will be released at this time so that contact 35 of relay IID interrupts the circuit which it controls for supplying energ to the winding of the trip stop IIV.
When the train vacates section HIT the track relay for that section picks up and its contact 26 interrupts the circuit of the winding of trip stop IIV and the trip-arm of this device moves to its upper or operative position, while contact 24 is opened to interrupt the circuit of the trip device winding and to also interrupt the circuit traim over. thee. device including: front contact: 40;; oil relay. On release of relay IZH as a result of occupation of section IST, contact 2! of relay IZH interrupts the supply of energy over wire 25 to relay HD and relay HD releases with the result that its contact 4| interrupts the circuit of the green lamp G and establishes the circuit of the yellow lamp Y of signal I is.
When the train advances into section |2T track relay l2TR releases and contact 26 interrupts the pick-up circuit for relay I 2D, but this relay is energized by current supplied over its stick circuit so its contacts remain picked up and establish the circuit for supplying energy to the winding of trip l2V and to relay l ID.
When the train vacates section EST track relay I3TR picks up and its contact 2i] interrupts the circuit including front contact 35 of relay ISD for supplying energy to the winding of. trip stop I3V and the arm of this device moves to its upper or operative position.
Similarly, when the train vacates section I2T track relay IZTR picks up and its contact 20 interrupts the circuit including front contact 35 of relay l 2D for supplying energy to the Winding of trip stop 12V and the arm of this device moves to its upper or operative position unless the com tacts of relay I'ZH pick up to establish a circuit for th winding of trip stop 12V.
The apparatus for section HT is operated in response to the train moving in the reverse direction in the same manner as the apparatus for section [2T and a description of such operation need not be repeated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the relay D for each section serves as a distant relay to select between the caution and clear ignal indications of the associated signal on movement of a train through the track stretch in the normal direction, while on movement of a train through the track stretch in the reverse direction the relays D serve'as directional stick relays and are progressively-controlled by the track relays to cause the train stops to be progressively moved to inoperativ positions and thus permit a train to pass over the train stops. The relays D are released behind the train moving in the reverse direction so that control of the train stops is restored to the track and home relays.
The equipment is arranged so that on movement of a train through the track stretch in the reverse direction the train stop for each section is energized as soon as the train enters the associated section. Accordingly, each train stop will have ample time to complete its movement to the inoperative position before the train passes through the track section and reaches the train stop.
Although I have herein shown and described only on form of railway traffic controlling apparatus embodying my invention, it is understood that various changes and modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination, a stretch of railway track having a normal direction of trafiic and formed with consecutive track sections each of which is provided with a track circuit including a track relay, a trackway train control device for each section for use with cooperating train carried apparatus and capable of assuming an inoperative or an operative position according as an associated control circuit is closed or open, a home relay for each section which is picked up when and only when the associated section and the adjacent section in advance are vacant, a distant relay for each section, a signal for each section governed by the associated home and distant relays, means including front contacts of the track and home relays of a track section for closing the circuit of the control device for such section, means including back contacts of the track and home relays and a front contact of the distant relay for a track section for also closing the circuit of the control device for such section, a pick-up circuit for the distant relay for each section including a front contact of the track relay of the associated section and a contact closed when and only when the control device for the section in advance is in its inoperative position, and a stick circuit for each distant relay including its own front contact and a back contact of the associated home relay.
2. In combination, a stretch of railway track having a normal direction of traffic and formed with consecutive track sections each of which is provided with a track circuit including a track relay, a trackway train control device for each section for use with cooperating train carried apparatus and capable of assuming an inoperative or an operative position according as an associated control circuit is closed or open, a home relay for each section which is picked up when and only when the associated section and the adjacent section in advance are vacant, a distant relay for each section, a signal for each section governed by the associated home and distant relays, means including a front contact of the home relay for a track section for closing the circuit of the control device for such section, means including a front contact of the distant relay for a track section for also closing the circuit of the control devicefor such section, a pickup circuit for the distant relay for each section including a contact closed only when the associated section is vacant and a contact closed when the control device for the section in advance is in its inoperative position, and a stick circuit .for each distant relay including its own front contact and a back contact of the associated home relay.
13. In combination, a stretch of railway track having a normal direction of trafiic and formed with consecutive track sections each of which is provided with a track circuit including a track relay, a trackway train control device for each section for use with cooperating train carried control apparatus and capable of assuming an inoperative or an operative condition according as an associated control circuit is closed or opened, a home and a distant relay for each section, a signal for each section governed by the associated home and distant relays, means for each control device including a front contact the associated home relay for closing the circult of said control device, means for each control device including a front contact of the associated distant relay for also closing the circuit of said control device, an energizing circuit for each home relay including front contacts of the associated track relay and of the track relay for the adjacent section in advance, circuit means governed by said track relays when a train traverses said track stretch in the normal direction to energize each of said distant relays when and only when the track relay of the associated section and'the home relay of the adjacent section in advance are picked up, and circuit means governed by said track relays when a train traverses said track stretch in the reverse direction to energize each of said distant relays when the associated section is occupied.

In combination, a stretch of railway track having a normal direction of traffic and formed with consecutive track sections each of which is provided with a track circuit including a track relay, a trackway train control device for each section for use with cooperating train carried control apparatus and capable of assuming an inoperative or an operative condition according as an associated control circuit is closed or opened, a home and a distant relay for each section, a signal for each section governed by the associated home and distant relays, means for each control device including a front contact of the associated home relay for closing the circuit V of said control device, means for each control device including a front contact of the associated sociated track relay and of the track relay for the adjacent section in advance, circuit means governed by said track relays when a train traverses said track stretch in the normal direction to energize each of said distant relays when and only when the track relay of the associated section and the home relay of the adjacent section in advance are picked up, and circuit means governed by said track relays when a train traverses said track stretch in the reverse direction to energize each of said distant relays when .the associated section or the adjacent section in advance is occupied.

In combination, a stretch of railway track having a normal direction of traflic and formed with consecutive track sections each of which is provided with a track circuit including a track relay, a trackway train control device for each section for use with cooperatin train carried apparatus, each control device having an arm biased to an operative position and being moved to an inoperative position when a winding associated with the device is energized, a home relay for each section which is picked up when and only when the associated section and the adjacent section in advance are vacant, a distant relay for each section, a signal for each section goverped by the associated home and distant relays, a line wire for each section substantially coextensive with the section, a circuit including a front contact of the home relay for each section for supplying energy to the winding of the'associated control device and if the arm of said control device is in its inoperative position and the track relay for the adjacent section in the rear is picked up to also supply energy over the line wire for the section in the rear to the distant relay for the section in the rear, a circuit including a front contact of the distant relay for each section for supplying energy to the winding of the associated control device and if the arm of said control device is in its inoperative position and the track relay for the section in the rear is picked up to also supply energy over the line wire for the section in the rear to the distant relay for the section in the rear, a stick circuit for each distant relay including its own front contact and a back contact of the associated home relay, and for each control device a circuit for supplying energy to the winding thereof over the line wire for the adjacent section in the rear provided the'tr'ack relay for said section in the rear is is released and the arm of said control device is in its inoperative position.
