To stop themoperation of the feeding means, the drive connection 20, 2| between the pot I and rod l3 may be automaticallydisconnected. The detent 2| .carriesra shoe .oran'anti-frictionroller 24 which normally runs on a surface 25,,suitably secured to or formed :on vthe. bracket 32 behindthe .shoulder zflt A lever 25 pivoted at 21 at the end of the surface 25 has one end pivotally connected with the spindle 28 of a float 29. The spindle 28 is slidable in a bearing 30 secured to said pot. When the level of the metal'in the pot rises or lowers the float will lift and fall thus rocking the lever. The free end of the lever 26 is inclined at 3| and normally the inclined end 3| is positioned above the roller 24. However, when the metal in the pot reaches a predetermined level the float 29 will rise to swing the inclined end 3| into the path of the roller 24 and cause it to run up the incline 3| and along the lever 26. The detent 2| is thus moved to an inoperative position relative to the shoulder 20. The rod l3 and the follower l4 are thus not moved whereby additional slugs will not be fed to the pot l until the level of the metal therein drops sufiiciently to cause the lever 26 to be moved out of the path of the roller 24. When this occurs the feeding means will again'resume its function.
What we claim as our invention is:

Apparatus for charging a melting pot of a typesetting machine comprising a movable melting pot; means for carrying charging material and for discharging it into the pot; means for feeding the material from the carrier into the pot comprising a reciprocating rod operable by the movable pot in one direction; a follower slidable on the rod and having a one-way drive connection therewith for advancing the material towards the pot on each forward movement of the rod; means for returning the rod; and means carried by the follower having a cramping engagement with the carrier to resist movement with the-rod during its return stroke.

Apparatus for charging a melting pot of a typesetting machine-comprising a movable melting pot; a guide on said machine, a galley having an open end for directing used slugs from the galley into the pot, the galley being carried by the guide; bearings carried by the guide; a reciprocating rod slidably and removably mounted in said bearings; a shoulder carried by said pot;

Apparatus for charging a melting pot of a typesetting machine comprising a movable melting pot; a guide on said machine; a galley having an open end, for directing used slugs from the galley into the pot, the galley being carried by the guide, bearings carried by the guide; a reciprocating rod slidably and removably mounted in said bearings; a shoulder carried by said pot; a detent engaged'by said shoulder and adjustably connected with the rod to vary'the movegalley into the pot, the galley being carried by the guide; bearings carried by said galley; a reciprocating rod slidably and removably mounted in said bearings; a shoulder carried by said pot;

surface carried by thepot behind the shoulder; an anti-friction roller on the detent normally running on said surface; a lever having an inclined end; a float in the not connected with the lever for positioning the inclinedend thereof in the path ofthe roller when the level of the metal in the pot rises above a predetermined point so that the roller will run upthe inclined end of the lever and along it to move the detent out of position for engagement with the shoulder.

Apparatus for charging a melting pot of a typesetting machine comprising a movable melting pot; means for carrying charging material and for discharging it into the pot; means for feeding the material from the carrier into the pot comprising a reciprocating rod having a oneway drive connection with the pot; a follower slidable on the rod and having a one-way drive connection therewith for advancing the ma terial towards the pot as the rod is moved thereby; means for returning the rod to its initial position; and means for retaining the follower in its advanced position at the end of each stroke thereof.

Apparatus for charging a melting pot of a typesetting machine comprising a movable melting pot: means for carrying charging material and for discharging it into the pot;,means for feeding the material from the carrier into the pot comprising a reciprocating rod having a disengageable drive connection with the pot; float controlled means for engaging and disengaging said drive connection; a follower slidable on the rod and having a one-way drive connection therewith for advancing the material towards the pot on each forward-movement ofthe rod; and means for retaining the follower in its advanced position at the end of each stroke.
