The invention relates to milling machines and `the like, vand has for its object to provide a novel attachment capable of being readily combined with the machine and designed to increasethe operative sphere of the latter.
The invention contemplates further the provision of a novel attachment for turning, facing and boring, arranged for easy and eflcient combination with the milling machine orthe like, to become an operative part thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple attachment which may be readily com bined with a milling machine or the llike to perform operations therein, heretofore, requiring velaborate and complicated equipment set up in a lathe.
Other objects will appear from the description hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the claims.

The novelattachment inthe form illustrated in Figs. 1 to 10 inclusive .comprises a'bracketl5 having its upper end split at I3 and provided withan opening l1, and a bolt 1 8 and nut I8.-a

An externallyethreaded clutch ring 21 is mounted on the annular bearing section 23 and is rigidly clamped thereon, between the annular Ashoulder 25. and the face of the depending portion I9 of the bracketf l5, and an internally-.threaded.clutch sleeve l2 8 is rotatably mounted on the clutch ring 21 inthreaded engagement therewith. The
threads of the ring 21 and sleeve 28 are of the quick-acting type to enable said sleeve 28 to `function. as .a feed clutch in the manner to be more fully set forth hereinafter. Any suitable `means ,may be provided .to facilitate the opera' tion oflthe clutch sleeve 28, as for instance by providing thevsame with an outwardlyeprojecting handle'23 Awhich may be detachably threaded into said sleeve 28. An annular feed clutch gear 30 is mountedon the bearingsection 24 and is located between vthe clutch sleeve 28 and the annular flange 26 of themember or pedestal 22 as shown i'n-.Fig 1'.A Dependent upon thev position of the clutch sleeve 23, the feed clutch gear 30 is either xed `against rotation on the bearing vsection 24 or is freeto rotate thereon. To facilitate the .lockingof the gear 30 by-'theolutch sleeve 28,
the latter preferably ispprovided on its one `face with an annular rib 28-a arranged to frictionally fit into an annular groove 30-.-a formed in the contiguous face ofthe gear 30 vas shown in Fig. 5. To improve the action of the clutch mechanism the rib 28-a and groove 30-a may be beveled in complemental relation to each other.
.The attachment further includesa. compound, `comprising a block 3| provided on one vface with an annular shoulderl 32fromwhich a preferably vtapering stem 32-a projects inv perpendicular relation preferably ras an integral part of the block 3|. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the block 3| includes a recess 3l, the opposite end walls of which are provided with threaded openingsfor the reception of threaded bearing bushings 38. A Acompound feed-screw 39 is rotatably mounted in said bushings 38 and at one end projects outwardly beyond the block 3| and is screw-threaded for the accommod'atio'n o'fa. nut-dwhere'by said' feed screw 39 is fixed 'against relative lengthwise movement without interfering with its rotation relatively to said block 3|. The clutch member 42. is keyed uponthe feed-screw 39`in any suitable-manneras by means of projections42--a or a conventional key ortlie like carried' by the` feed-screw 3.9 andextending into a. groove 45 extending lengthwise .interiorly of'the'clutch member 42. For the purpose ofl'xing the clutch. member 42 in different positions on the feed-screw 39, the lattermay be provided with a plurality ofindentations 46 designed to receive the inner Vend of a setscrew 4.1 carried by the clutch member 42`as shown in'Fig. 7.
The clutch member 42 is suitably designedfor cooperation with an associate male clutch member 48, and for this purpose may have theinner end portion ofthe sleeve 43 provided-interiorly witha pluralityof open-ended recesses 49' as illustrated in Fig. '7. The associate male clutch member. 48'is loosely mounted'on the feed-screw. 39 within the chamber 4| and. at its inner end carries aV worm gear 59, which preferably constitutesr an' integral `part of the male clutch member 4B' and in any,

To enable the feed-screw 39 to be manually operated at will, an operating handle 39-a may be' provided as' shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and re- 39 and coupled thereto in 'any conventional manner as by means of pins 39-b on the feed-screw 39 and cooperating recesses on the. handle 39-a into 'which said pins 39b are arranged'. to fit.
-In the operative assembled condition of the compound the slide 34 is slidably mounted upon the guide rib 33 ofthe block 3| as illustrated in Fig. 6.. In the preferred arrangement a metal' or other *strip 51 is located between the. one edge surface 35 of the rib 33 and the contiguous surface of one rib 36 of the slide 34. For the purpose of adjusting the strip l to take up wear and to adjust the braking effect thereof, the block 3| may be provided with a plurality of set screws 5B bearing against said strip 51 and fixed in adjusted positions by lock-nuts 59. If the latter occupies-its left hand position in Figs. 1 and 5, in which the annular rib l2li-a kof the sleeve 281sv disengaged from the annular groove Sli-a, the feed clutch gear 30 will be free to rotate on the bearing section 24. Under such conditions the pinion 55 being in mesh with the gear 3th will simply cause the latter to rotate on vvbearing section 24 without bringing about any rotation of the pinion55 on its own axis. As a result the worm shaft 53, and worm .pinion 52 ralso do .notrotate about their common. axis and no rotative operation of theworm gear 50 on its .own axis takes place, with the result that the feed-screw 39'also remains stationary, insofaras relative rotative movement on its own axis is con cerned. .The slide 34 consequently does not move relatively to the block 3| and the tool 65 re.-

If the operation being performed by the tool B5 requires it. the feed-screw 39 may be relativelyrotatedon its'axis'in the following manner. A downward pressure on the handle 29 rotates the clutch sleeve 2li-on the relatively stationary clutch ring 21 which, Athrough the cooperation ofthe screwthreads of said ring 21 andv sleeve 28 shifts the-latter to the right to the posii tion shown in Fig. 5andforces the annular rib 2S-a into the annular groove 3ft-c in frictional engagement therewith; As a result the feed clutch gear 30 is lookedagainst relative rotativemovement on the bearing section 24.
Under such conditions. as the compound is rotated as previously described by the operation of the driving spindle A and stem 32`-a, the pinion 55 isv caused torollupcn and travel circumferentially of the stationary gear 30.

An attachment for milling machines and the like comprising a bracket adapted to be removably mounted in the machine, a feed-clutch gear rotatably mounted on said bracket, means for selectively locking said feed-clutch gear against rotating, a compound movably carried by said bracket for connection with the driving means of said machine, a feed-screw carried by said com` pound, tool-carrying means movably mounted on said compound in operative connection with said feed-screw, a tool removably carried by said toolcarrying means, a pinion on said compound operatively connected with said feedfscrew, a main gear .on vsaid compound meshing withV said feedclutch gear and operated thereby when vvsaid clutch gear is locked against operation, a train of gearingy connecting said main gear with said' bracket for connection with the driving of said machine, a feed-screw carried by said compound, tool-carrying means movably mounted on said compound in operative connection'with said feedscrew, a tool removably carried by said tool-carryconnected with said vfeed-screw, a main gear on said compound meshing with said feed-clutch gear and operated thereby when said clutch gear is locked against operation, a train of gearing connecting said main gear with said pinion, and a lever pivotally mounted on said compound and carrying said train oi gearing for selectively ad justing the latter to reverse the direction of operation of said feed screw.
