MARKING ROLLER Filed March 6, 1942 INVENTOR MARK ANDREWS UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE 7 a MARKING ROLLER I Mark Andrews, Kirkwood, Mo.
Application March 6, 1942, Serial N0. 433,619
4 Claims.
amount of time required to apply the proper. marking, in fact, previous marking methods have been so unsatisfactory that they have not been fully applied, with the result that many piecesof valuable material are, lost, because, unless the marking is given, there'is no way of distinguishing different materials which may have identical surface appearance. By the use of my invention, such materials may be fully marked from end to end at negligible cost. i
It is the object of the invention to produce a new and improved marking device.
The invention will be better understood upon consideration of the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a sectional elevation device, and
Figure 2 shows a plan view.
The reference numeral I indicates a frame made of sheet material, preferably fibre or Bakelite. The two substantially identical frame members are separated by bushings 3, 4, 5 and 6, and the assembly is held together by a rivet l, which passes through the bushing 3, and bolts 8,
19 and Ill whichpass through the bushings 4, 5
and 6, respectively. The bolts and their respective bushings form spacer axles for the wheels II, l2 and 13.
But, these methods have been unsatisfac of the i the type roller by means of the transfer roller I2 on which is mounted the rubber tire l9 to which While these is attached the transfer ring 20. members are quite durable and seldom'need replacement, they may be detached for cleaning purposes by removal of the spacer axle 8-4, and it will be understood that the bushing may be made integral with the roller l2, if desired.
In operation, the ink is'applied to the ink reservoir or felt member I! in liberal quantities.
The marking device is held in the hand and.
dragged over the article to be marked, using the type roller I ll5 as a supporting tire;
reservoir and transfer roller are rotated by contactwith the member l5, which is the only member to contact the material being marked. In
cluding side plates a plurality of removable pins extending through said plates and having intermediate axle portions, removable bushings on said axle portions for holding said plates in spaced relation, hub portions fixed on said bushings, and a marking roller, a reservoir roller and The wheel ll carries a rubber type roller or the printing characters or type. This tire is resilient and detachable by removing the spacer axle 5-9 which is accomplished by merely unscrewing the 'nut It. A separate tire is provided for each marking which it is desired to use, and these tires are interchangeable'on the roller H by the removal of the spaceraxle -95. In this tire l4, and a tread l5 of the tire is formed of a transfer roller, each including a relatively thick inner layer of resilient material for removable frictional engagement with said hub portions, and being detachable with their. hubs upon removal of said pins.
2. A marking device comprising a frame including spaced side plates, a pivot pin extending through said plates adjacent one end thereof, a plurality of removable spaced pins extending through said plates, each of said spaced pins including intermediate axle portions, removable bushings on the axle portions of said pins and,
hub portions fixed on said bushings, a marking roller, reservoir roller and transfer roller mounted on said hubs, each of said rollers including resilient inner portions for frictionally engaging the hubs and surface portions, the surface portion of said rollers being in peripheral contact with each other whereby movement of the marking roller will transmit motion to the transfer and reservoir rollers.
3. A marking device comprising a frame including spaced side plates, a pivot pin for connecting said side plates adjacent one end, a plurality of removable pins extendingthrough said plates, each of said pins including intermediate axle portions, a marking roller mounted on one of said pins, said marking roller including a resilient removable tire portion and an inner hub.
The
portion rotatably mounted on the axle, and means for feeding and transferring ink to said marking roller. I
4. In a marking device, a frame constructed and arranged to be held in the hand, a marking roller, a reservoir roller, and a transfer roller carried by said frame in peripheral contact with each othenwhereby movement of the marking roller will cause rotation of the transfer and reservoir rollers, said reservoir roller having a rubber-cored felt-covered tire and said marking roller including a, cushioned core removably mounted on a detachable hub portion.
