3 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in bottle capping machines and relates more particularly to improvements in machines for automatically applying screw caps or the like to bottles and jars.
The main object in my invention is to provide an improved machine for applying screw caps to bottles or jars in an efficient manner. It includes an improved means for conveying the bottles to a cap applying position.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate preferred embodiments thereof, it being understood that the above statement of the objects of my invention is intended generally to explain the same without limiting it in any manner.
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of my improved machine.
Fig. 2 is a right side elevational view.
Fig. 3 is a left side elevational view.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view along line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view along line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, B designates a bench member having the vertical front and rear members I, said front and rear members having positioned there between the motor and reduction gear mount 2.
Positioned above said mount and also held between the front and rear members I is the intermediate shelf 3, and positioned above the said shelf 3 on top of the front and rear members I is the top plate 4, said top plate 4 being reenforced by the cross pieces 5, positioned below said top plate and running from the front member I to the rear member I.
Mounted on the motor mount 2 are the motor Ii and the reduction gear I, a belt 8 joining the drive pulley 9 of the motor 6 to the pulley III of the reduction gear I. The output shaft II leads from said reduction gear I and terminates at a point substantially above the top plate 4.
Keyed to shaft II rotatable therewith and positioned on said shaft at a point between the intermediate shelf 3 and top plate 4 is the bevel gear I2, said bevel gear I2 engages the bevel gear I3, which bevel gear I3 is fixed on a shaft l4. Situated on the shelf 3 and secured thereto by means of bolts I5, is a bushing member I6, said bushing member rotationally holding the shaft I4. Positioned on the shaft I4 at the end opposite the end holding the bevel gear I3 is a sprocket member I'I.
Connected to the top plate 4 by means of a pair of bolts I9 is a conveyor holding shelf 20, said conveyor holding shelf having a vertical flange 2I connecting the upper rearwardly projecting arm 22 to the lower forwardly projecting ledge 23. Situated along the horizontal ledge 23 and running along the. entire length thereof are the pair of upright channel members 24, said channel members being substantially separated and having their concave portions facing each other.
Positioned and held at each end of the channel members are the sprocket holding members and shields 26, said members 26 rotationally holding the sprockets 21 and 28, the sprocket 21 idling on axle 29, and the sprocket 28 being rotationally rigid .with the shaft 30'.
Keyed to the inner end of shaft 30 is a sprocket member, said sprocket member being connected to the sprocket member H, by means of the sprocket chain 32.
The conveyor belt consists of a sprocket chain 34 engaged by the sprockets 21- and 28, said sprocket chain 34 having fixed along its entire outer perimeter the series of segmental plates 35, said plates 35 forming the continuous outer surface of the conveyor belt.
The L shaped brackets 36 having their vertical legs connected to the front face of the front vertical member I by means of bolts 31, have positioned on their horizontal legs the conveyor supporting ledge 39, which conveyor supporting ledge prevents the conveyor from oversag ging.
A set of parallel front guide members 40 are secured to the guide holding members M, which guide holding members are adjustably mounted by means of bolts 42 to brackets 43, which brackets 43' are secured to the outer channel member 24. A pair of rear guide members 45 similar to 1 the front guide members 40 and parallel thereto are positioned on the opposite side of the con veyor,
Positioned on the top plate 4 are the bottle clamping and the bottle flow regulating means. Secured to top plate 4 by means of bolts I40 is the guide member I, said guide member slidably engaging the slidable member I42 and said guide member having a longitudinal opening in its left side wall. Laterally projecting from the front end of the member I42 is the horizontalflange I43, said horizontal flange having rotatably pinned to its outer end by means of bolt I44 the lever I45, said lever having a horizontally projecting portion I41 at its front end. A T shaped bottle intercepting member I is removably secured to the horizontal bolt I49 passing through the cross bar of said member into the horizontal portion I41, the indrawn the arm I50 out of thepath of the bottles.

Pivotally mounted on the vertical pin I52 is the pawl type catch member I53, said member having the hook shaped rear portion I54 and the forward 3 portion I56, the counter-clockwise rotation of said pawl member being limited by pin I51 vertically projecting from lever I45 adjacent the forward portion I56.
The bottle flow regulating means above described is activated by the reciprocating arm I60,'
- I64, said projection being of horizontal triangular cross-section and being adapted to engage the hooked end I54 of member I53. The vertical roller I63 mounted on the arm I 60 at point intermediate the ends of said arm engages the circumferential edge of the cam I64a, which cam is rotationally rigid with the shaft II. Tension spring I65 secured between the rear end of arm I42 and the peg I66 projecting above plate 4 impels said arm to its forwardmost position; tension spring I68 whose ends are secured to the arm I 60 and the stationary peg I69 maintains said arm end at its forwardmost counter-clockwise position; tension spring I12, whose ends are secured to peg III projecting from the catch member I58 and to peg I10 projecting from lever I45 causes said catch member to rotate to its most counter-clockwise position; and tension spring I13 positioned between the lever I45 at a point posterior to pin I44, and a point on member I42 causes said lever to assume its mostclockwise position.
The operation of my machine is as follows:
The power is turned on thus starting up the motor, the drive shaft II, and the container conveyor. Rotating with the shaft II is the cam I64a, which cam in turn causes the continuous oscillation of the arm I60, which arm has the upright projection I64, said projection I64 normally passing too far to the left of the catch member I54 to engage the same. Upon placing a plurality of bottles upon the conveyor, the foremost bottle presses against the arm I50, which arm and the connected mechanism is normally kept forward by the tension spring I65. The aforementioned pressure causes the lever I45 to rotate counter-clockwise against the action of the spring I13, thus bringing the catch into the path of the oscillating projection I64 causing the catch member to engage the member I54 thus resulting in the drawing of arm I50 from-the path of the bottles and allowing one to pass. When arm I60 is at its most counter-clockwise position, member I64 is anterior to the catch member I54 and is disengaged by the same, thus necessitating the pressure of another bottle to keep lever I45 in that position where the catch member may again be engaged since said lever rotates back to the position whereby member I64'is again to the left of the catch member I54. The cams II and I64a are so shaped and positioned that when the arm I60 isin its most clockwise position thus having Hence, when a bottle is permitted to pass by the retraction of arm I50, the bottle is stopped by the left side of the clamp 55. The clamp is thence retracted, the bottle held thereby released and carried along by the conveyor, the following bottle conveyed into position and the clamp is then caused to engage the same, the speed of the con- ,veyor being such as to carry a bottle a bottle widths distance while the clamp is in retracted position.
I have shown preferred embodiments of my invention but it is obvious that numerous omissions and alterations may be made without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
1. A means for regulating the flow of articles on a continuously moving conveyor comprising a slideably mounted member, an arm swingably positioned on said slideable member, said arm having articulately mounted and independently movable catch means mounted thereon and having its front end normally in the path of the moving articles, periodically reciprocating means adapted to engage said catch means when said catch means are in the path of said reciprocating means, said catchmeans being brought into the path of said reciprocating means by the pressure of the moving article against the front end of the swingably mounted arm.
2. In a machine of the character described, a continuously moving conveyor adapted to carry containers, a slideable member movable in a direction transverse to the movement of said conveyor; a rotatable arm positioned on said slidevable member, said arm being pivoted about a catch meansare in the path of said periodically moving means, said catch means being resiliently maintained out of the path of said periodically moving means and being brought into said path by the pressure of a moving container against the front end of the rotatable arm.
3. In a machine of the character described, a continuously moving conveyor adapted to carry containers, a slideable member movable in a direction transverse to the movement of said conintermediate the ends thereof, the slideable member being resiliently maintained in forwardmost position, the rotatable arm having articulately mounted and independently movable catch means positioned on its posterior end and having its front end in the path of the moving containers when the slideable member is in its forwardmost position, periodically moving means having a vertically disposed pin substantially triangular in cross section adapted to engage the catch means when said catch means are in the path of said periodically moving means, said catch means being resiliently maintained out of the path of said periodically moving means and being brought into said path by the pressure of a moving container against the front end of the rotatable arm.
