10 Claims.
My invention relates to the art of knitting and more particularly to certain new. and useful improvements in the needles of the knitting machines of the type disclosed in my Patent No. 2,243,850, issued June 3, 1941.
More specifically the present invention relates to needles that have been devised for use with my knitting machines disclosed in my applications for patents led respectively March 4, 1941, Ser, No. 381,717, and March 2, 1942, Ser. No. 433,057, now Patent No. 2,336,455.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1, illustrates. in front elevation, a block of four needles constructed in accordance with the first embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a second embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the embodiment shown in Fig. 3.
The first embodiment of my invention is that of a needle devised especially for use in the machine of my application Ser. No. 381,717 aforesaid. So far as this part of thel present application is concerned it is a continuation in part of the said application.
The second embodiment of my invention is that of a needle which, while especially devised for use in the machine of my application Ser. No 433,057 aforesaid, may also be used with the machine of my application Ser. No. 381,717 aforesaid.
Both embodiments of my invention, namely that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and that shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawing comprise al shank 49 set in a block 48 and include a pointed end having an eye 50 above the point. Above the eye the shank is cut away or thinned on one side, as at 5I. for cooperation with looper hooks of the machines of the applications aforesaid. 1
The second embodiment, shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, differs from that of the rst embodiment of the invention in that the needle is also provided with a slot below the eye, see |30 Fig. 3. The inclusion of the slot |30 permits this needle to be used on two thread machinessuch as that shown in my application Ser. No. 433,057.
So far as the second embodiment of my invention is concerned the present application is a continuation of my application Ser. No. 433,057 aforesaid.
As will be seen, by reference to Figs. 2 and 3, in both embodiments of the invention the longistraight from the point to the block 4l and the longitudinal face opposite (that to the left in Figs. 2 and 3) is straight for a portion of its length from block 48 to where the eye 50 is formed. There it is bulged outwardly (to the left in Figs. 2 and 3) and then tapered to the point. Also, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 both sides of each needle tapers from the eye to the point. This provides for an easy penetration of the cloth being knitted lthrough and makes an elongated opening therein through which a thread lying along the needle above the eye may pass with minimum friction on the thread, an important factor when knitting with nylon or short nber thread.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is thought that the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art, especially to those familiar with the machines of my two applications aforesaid.
What I claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a needle having a shank, and a penetrating end having both an eye and a thread-receiving slot, said slot being located between the eye and the penetrating end of the needle, the eye extending transversely of the needle.
2. As a new arti'cle of manufacture, a needle having a shank and a penetrating end having both an eye and a thread-receiving slot, the shank above and adjacent the eye and slot being reduced in thickness at one side.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a needle having a shank, an eye portion of greater crosssection than the shank, and a penetrating point,
. the shank being reduced in thickness between the eye portion and that end of the shank which is remote from the point.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a needle having a shank, and a penetrating pointed end, an eye portion above and adjacent said end, and a thread receiving slot between the eye portion and the point of the needle, the eye extending transversely of the needle.
5. A knitting needle having a shank and a penetrating end, the shank on one side having a thinned portion, the shank between the thinned portion and Vthe penetrating end being enlarged and provided in the enlargement with an eye.
6. A knitting needle having a shank terminating in a pointed end, one longitudinal face of the shank being straight from the point to the end thereof remote from the point, the face opposite tudinal face of the needle 40 to the right is 55 said one longitudinal face extending parallel to the same for a portion thereof and then bulging outwardly and then tapering to the. point, the
bulging portion of the needle having an eye.
7. A knitting needle having a shank terminating in a pointed end, one longitudinal face of the shank being vstraight from the point to the end thereof remote from the point, the face opposite said one longitudinal face extending parallel to the same for a portion thereof and then bulging outwardly and then tapering tothe point, the bulging portion of the needle having an eye, a side of the shank, between the bulge and the end that is remote 4from the point, being cut away for the purposes described. A
8. A knitting needle having a shank terminating in a pointed end, one longitudinal face of the shank being straight from the point to the end thereof remote from the point, the face opposite said one longitudinal face extending parallel to the samel for a, portion thereof and then bulging outwardly and then tapering to the point, the bulging portion of the needle having an eye, the sides of the shank. between the eye and the point, being-tapered to the point.
20 to approximately the asmsos ,1 that is remote from the point, being cut away for the purposes described, the sides of. the shank, between the eye and the point, being tapered to the point.
10. A two-thread knitting needle having a shank and a penetrating end, said shank adjacent said encik having a transverse eye and havs ing a transverse slot opening through the longitudinal edge or' the shank that lies -opposite the eye.vsaid slot extending from adjacent said eye point of the needle.
