Definitions
- rlhe principle of my invention is to take off the steam-pressure of slide-valves for steam-engines, which is done by having the following attachments made to a common slide-valve:
- A is the body of a common slide-valve
- B B B B are four columns placed one on each corner on the top of slide-valve A
- C is a plate or top resting on columns B B B B
- D is a cap fitted steam-tight on the plate or top C, but so as to allow the same to move freely up and down;
- four holes are in the top or plate which run about half way into columns B B B B, to be used for spiral-springs E E E E.
- spiral springs are intended to press against cap D, which will bring cap D to bear against the top or cover of the steam-chest and at the same time valve against the Jface of the cylinder.
- the valve A, columns B B B B and top or plate C can be cast a solid piece or fitted together, and cap D tted to it as above said.
- This cap D in combination with spiral springs E E E E will serve as packing, so as to let no steam enter between cap D and the cover of the steam-chest.
- the steam will be between valve A and top or plate C and when made the same area there will be the same pressure against top or plate C as there is against valve A, but this can be made to suit so as to give the valve A more or less pressure against the face of the cylinder.

Description
C. A. SCHULTZ, 0F YORK, N. Y.
STEAM-VALVE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 23,714, dated April 19, 1859.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. A. SGHULTZ, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slide-Valves for Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and opera tion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is perspective view;` Fig. 2, a longitudinal elevation; Fig. 3, a plan.
rlhe principle of my invention is to take off the steam-pressure of slide-valves for steam-engines, which is done by having the following attachments made to a common slide-valve: A is the body of a common slide-valve, B B B B are four columns placed one on each corner on the top of slide-valve A, C is a plate or top resting on columns B B B B, D is a cap fitted steam-tight on the plate or top C, but so as to allow the same to move freely up and down; four holes are in the top or plate which run about half way into columns B B B B, to be used for spiral-springs E E E E. These spiral springs are intended to press against cap D, which will bring cap D to bear against the top or cover of the steam-chest and at the same time valve against the Jface of the cylinder. The valve A, columns B B B B and top or plate C can be cast a solid piece or fitted together, and cap D tted to it as above said. This cap D in combination with spiral springs E E E E will serve as packing, so as to let no steam enter between cap D and the cover of the steam-chest. The steam will be between valve A and top or plate C and when made the same area there will be the same pressure against top or plate C as there is against valve A, but this can be made to suit so as to give the valve A more or less pressure against the face of the cylinder.
Claim:
The combined arrangement of the spiral springs and their inclosing columns, with the plate C, as, and for the purposes above described.
