The slot l3 includes an end portion l6 of uniform width for the insertion and removal of they block l4.
The upper portion of the ball l2 has formed therein a T slot l1 which extends at right angles Figure 10 is a detail view in perspective of one to the slot I3 and which is similar thereto. Mounted for peripheral adjustment on the upper portion of the :ball I2 is a substantially segmental upper socket l8. As best seen in Figure 8 of the drawings; the socket l8 has formed therein a groove 20. An arcuate key 2| is secured by countersunk screws 22 in the groove 20 and projects therefrom for operation in the narrow outer portion of the slot l1.
Slidably engaged in the comparatively wide inner portion of the slot I1 is a locking block 23 which is substantially similar to the member I4. A bolt 24 is rotatably mounted in the socket l8 and the key 2| and threadedly connected to the further includes an upstanding, circular portion 25 having a peripheral groove 26 therein.
A vise unit 21 is mounted for rotary adjustment on the socket l8. Toward this end, the
head of 'the bolt 24. Any suitable means may be provided for releasably securing the bed 28 in adjusted position on the socket I 8.
The unit 21 further comprises an upstanding stationary jaw 32 on one end portion of the bed 28. Rising from the other end portion, of the bed 28 is a longitudinally extending eye 33. A flanged, internally threaded bushing 34 is secured by a set screw 35 in the eye 33. Threadedly mounted in the bushing 34 is a clamping screw 36. The screw 36 is rotatably connected at one end, as at 31, to a slidable jaw 38 on the bed 28. The stationary and slidable jaws 32 and 38, respectively, are provided with removable face 39.
It is thought that the operation of'the device willybe readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the tool or other device is placed in the unit 21 and firmly secured between the jaws 32 and 38. Then, by loosening any or all of the elements 8, I5, 24, et cetera, the vise may be expeditiouslyadjusted as desired for holding the tool in any desired position. Scales 40 on the relatively movable members or units facilitate rapid and accurate adjustment of the vise for holding the tool or other object in any desired position or at any suitable inclination.
It is believed that the many advantages of a vise constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A vise comprising a flat horizontal base adapted to be secured on a support and having a relasocket and slidably engaged in the narrow outer portion of said groove to permit oscillating adjustment of the ball relative to the socket about a horizontal axis, a locking block slidably mounted in the wider inner portion of said groove, an inclined bolt rotatably extendin through the socket and the key at one side 0 the lower portion of said ball and threaded int said locking block for releasably binding the lat ter against the outer walls. of the wider portion of said groove to secure the ball in adjusted positions relative to the socket, said ball having a second peripheral T-shaped groove in the upper portion thereof located in a plane intersecting the axis of the ball at right angles to the firstnamed groove, a second segmento-spherical socket mounted on top of the ball and having an outwardly projecting disk-like portion, a second arcuate key carried by said second socket and slidably engaged in the narrow outer portion of said second groove, a second locking block slidably mounted in the wider inner portion of said second groove, a second bolt rotatably extending through said second socket and said second key centrally of the disk-like portion of said second socket and threaded into the second locking block to releasably bind the latter against the outer walls of the wider portion of the second groove to secure the second socket in adjusted positions relative to the ball, and a vise unit including a jaw-carrying bed having a circular opening in which the disk-like portion of the second socket is rotatably secured to permit rotary adjustmentof said vise unit relative to the second socket.
