Spring 20 and key I9 exert some friction on bar I 8 so that it Will not move too freely. It may be stated that shaft IB will be one of the operating members for the dispensing or similar machine and will be connected to the desired train of mechanism of said machine.
An arm 23 has a lower portion extending along the outer side of member I I and secured thereto by one set of the screws I2 which are threaded into post Ilia. Another similarv arm 24 is secured to the outer side of member I I some distance from arm 23, said latter arm being secured by screws 25. Arms 23 and 24 are provided with bearings at their upper ends in which is journaled a shaft 26. Shaft 2S has secured thereto an arm 2'1 having a knob-like enlargement at its lower end adapted and positioned to engage the outer end of bar I8. Arm 21 has a split hub 21a embracing shaft 26 and clamped thereon by a screw 28. A collar 22 is secured to shaft 26, disposed between and engaging hub 21a and one side of the bearing arm 23. Another arm 29 is secured to shaft 26 and extends upwardly therefrom, arm 28 having a split hub 29a embracing shaft 26 and clamped thereto'by a screw 3D, said hub engaging one side of the bearing of arm 24. Endwise'movement of shaft 26 is thus prevented. Arm 28 has a recess 29h adjacent its upperend for a purpose to be later described. A plate 3l extends vertically at the outer side of member I andv this plate may be the front plate'of a dispensing or similar machine. Plate 3I has an opening 3| a adjacent its upper end and a bracket 32 is secured to the outer side of plate 3l by screws 33. Bracket 32 has flanges engaging plate 3| at either side of opening 3 Ia and has an inwardly projecting plate 32a and an outwardly projecting plate or portion 32h. Bracket 32 has a slot extending through its inner and outer portions in which is slidable a coil slide 34. Slide 34 is in the form of a iiat narrow plate and the same has an upturned cylindrical portion 34a at its outer end forming a handle. Slide 34 has a circular aperture 34h extending therethrough of a size to receive the proper coin to actuate the machine. Said member 34 also has a slot 34e some distance inwardly from aperture 34o adapted to receive the lower operating end of a pawl 35 pivoted on and carried on a stud 36 secured in a small boss 32e on bracket 32. Pawl 35 also has a tooth-like projection 35a extending through an opening in the top of bracket 32 and adapted to engage the side of an opening 34e in slide 34. A torsion springv 3'! extends about stud 36 engaging bracket 32 with one of its ends and extending over and engaging pawl 35 with its other end. Bracket 32 hasv a laterally extending boss 32d receiving a stud 38 on which is carried a pawl 39 engaged by atensile spring 45 secured to.
an arm thereof and at its other end to a. projec tion 32e of ,bracket 32. Pawl 39 is adapted to engage certain recesses 34d formed in the side of slide 34. When slide 34 is pushed inwardly to the limit of its movement as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 4 and 6,- it engages in recess 29h of arm 29 to swing the same and shaft 25, thusswinging arm 21 to cause the latter to move bar I8.
Members I0 and II have another set of bosses Ib and IIb in which is journaled a shaft 42. Shaft 42 has secured thereto between said bosses a gear 43 having a hub engaging the ends of bosses Ibb and IIbb. Gear 43 has a cam 43a projecting at one side thereof beyond its hub, said cam having its operating face at its side portion, which side portion or surface extends circumferentially from the side of gear 43 to quite a distance laterally from said gear. Member II is provided with axially alined` inner and outer bosses Il and II g respectively in which is movable a plunger 44. Plunger 44 has a collar 44a within boss I I g engaged by a coil compression spring 45, the other end of which engages a collar 48 secured in the end of boss IIg so that plunger 44 is urged inwardly against cam 43a. Plunger 44 extends beyond the end of boss II g and forms another operating element for the dispensing .or

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated the end of plunger 44 is shown as engaging a bell crank lever 41 mounted on a pivot 48 carried in a bracket 49 which will be secured to the frame of the machine. Bell crank lever 41. is shown as having a rod 5i) pivotallysecured to its other end which will perform some desiredoperation. A bar 5I extends between the members i0 and II, having cylindrical trunnions Sia journaled in said members respectively. A pawl 52 extends laterally from bar 5I having -a downwardly curved end adapted to engage between the teeth of gear 43 and prevent clockwise motion of-gear 43 as seen Fig. l. Pawl 52 is of considerable weight and acts by gravity in engaging gear 43. Reverse rotation of pinion I5 and gear I1 is also prevented when gear 43 is prevented from reverse rotation. A casing 55 of sheet metal extends over and about the sides of members I0 and II enclosing the parts therein, said casing being secured to member i0 by screws 55.
In operation when the machine is in position for dispensing an article, bar I8 will occupy the position shown in Fig. 5 and coin slide 34 will be in the position shown in full lines in Figs. 4 and 6. The party or operator desiring one of the dispensed articles will place a coin 54 in aperture 34h. There will be directions mounted on the machine telling the operator to` deposit the coin and the denomination of the coin.V -The directions will also tell the operator how many turns to give the handle or crank I4. The operator having placed the coin in slide 34 will then push inwardly on said slide. The coin will move inwardly in bracket 32 and pawl 35 will be lifted as its curved end is engaged by slide 34 at the end of slot 34e. It will be noted that said pawl 35 will prevent slide 34 being moved outwardly or inwardly Without a coin placed therein. Slide 34 is moved inwardly and must be moved to its innermost position before it can be retracted. When it moves to this position the end of pawl 39 enters the long recess 34d and can then reverse its position and allow slide 34 to be again moved outwardly to the full line position shown in Figs. 4 and 6. The coin slide comprising members 32 and 35 inclusive is well known in the art and forms no part of the present invention. Cam 43a will operate on plunger 44 and the mechanism operated by plunger 44 which is usually a trip operation will be performed. Shaft I6 will be rotated and the necessary operations of the machine performed by this shaft will be accomplished. As gear I7 nears the end of its revolution cam I 'Ib will act on bar I8 engaging the same at one side of slot Ia and moving said bar to the position shown in Fig. 3. Just as said bar reaches this position or a moment after, stopI I'Ia will engage the side of bar I8 and further rotation of shaft I3 or gear I'I will be prevented. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated there is a- 3 to 1 ratio be- After It will be noted that shaft I4 cannot be turned in the wrong or reverse rotation from that directed. Such reverse movement is prevented by pawl 52.
From the above description it is seen that'applicant has provided a simple, rugged and efficient control mechanism for controlling the operation of a dispensing or other machine. The device is simple, the parts are' few in number and all are rugged in constr'liction and so mounted that there is no danger of any parts becoming disarranged or getting rout of order. There is no delicate mechanism to be kept in adjustment..
The device has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found` to be very successful and e'cient.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts, Witho-ut departing from the scope of applicants invention, which generally stated, consistsA in a device capable of carrying out the objects above set forth, in the parts and combinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:
1. A control device for a dispensing machine having in combination, a rotatable member,l
means for rotating said member, a stop member movable with said member, a movable member.

A control device for a dispensing machine having in combination, a rotatable member, a stop member carried by said rotatable member, a bar movable transversely of said member to stop position so that said stop member will engage the same and to non-stop position so that it will permit passage of said stop means and r0- tation of said rotatablel member, manually op'- erated means for moving saidl bar to non-stop position and-a cam on said rotatable member for moving said bar to stop position.
6. The structure setl forth in claim 5, said rotatable member constituting a gear and said bar which said gear is movthereby, means forv limiting the number of rotations of saidfpinion comprising a stop means on said gear, a stop member engaged by said stop means, means for moving said stop member to non-stop position and means movable with vsaid gear to move said stop member to stop position.

A control device for a dispensing machine having incombination, a casing, a shaft journaled in said casing, means for rotating said shaft journaled in said casing, a gear secured to said second shaft meshing with said pinion, a stop meanson said gear, a bar extending transversely of said gear and having a slot therein through which said gear passes' and through which said stopmeans may pass, means for moving vsaid bar to stop position Where it is engageable by said stop means, said bar being movable to non-stop position so that said stop means may pass through said slot and a cam on said gear engaging said bar at one end of said slot to move said bar to stop position after a certain rotation of said gear.
