TAPE FOR ADJUSTABLE FASTENERS Filed Oct. 27, 1942 I0.y C" l 2 INVENTOR ATTORNEY row; and due to the manner of spacing the fastener elements and the hooks, there may be unintentional simultaneous engagement of the hooks with fastener elements of different pairs, which causes the part that carries the hook to be thrown out of line with or in diagonal or twisted relation to the fastener tape. This is objectionable especially when the fastener is embodied in a garment such-asabrassire where the fastener is obscured for example at the back of the wearer while being hooked.

Accordingly a further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable fastener which shall be constructed in a novel and improved manner to overcome such disadvantages of known adjustable fasteners and to ensure accurate and easy engagement of the hooks with the fastener elements at all times.

Other objects, advantages and results of the invention will be brought out by the following descriptionin conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a rear elevational view of a brassire having applied thereto an adjustable fastener.

Figure 2 is a composite view on an enlarged scale showing one section of the fastener in plan and the other section in perspective.

Figure 3 isa further enlarged fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and

Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view on lthe line 4-4 of Figure 2.

In its broader aspects my fastener comprises two sections A and B one of which includes one or more rows of fastener elements C with which selectively cooperates the other section B of the fastener which includes a hook I2 for each row of fastener elements. While theinvention contemplates the application of the fastener element C and the hooks I2 directly to two parts to be connected, for example two parts of a garment or article, the invention more particularly is directedto a fastener wherein the fastener elements are connected to a tape or strip I, which is applied to a portion of a garment or an article such as one end of a brassire D, and the hooks I2 are attached to a, tab or strip 2 which is connected to the other portion of the garment or article, such as the other end of the brassire D.

More specifically describing the invention, the part A of th'e fastener includes the body or base strip I of suitable material, for example textile fabric that has its longitudinal edge portions folded inwardly upon the same side of the strip as at 3.

Each fastener element C comprises a cross strip or bar of suitable material such as textile fabric that is disposed transversely of the base strip and secured thereto with portions of the cross strip spaced from the base strip to receive the bill of a hook and permit engagement of such hook with the cross strip.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, there are two rows of fastener elements C on the section A, each row including a plurality of fastener elements spaced longitudinally of the base strip I. One fastener element in each row is in alinernent transversely of the base strip with one fastener element in the other row so as to comprise a pair'of fastener elements, and the elements of each pair are formed by the same cross strip. Preferably there are a plurality of. cross strips 4 extending transversely of the base strip I in parallel relation to each other and spaced longitudinally of the base strip, and the extremities of the cross strips are located beneath the inwardly folded longitudinal edge portions 3 of the base strip as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 4.

Suitable means is provided for securing the end portions of the cross strips to the base strip and as shown lines of stitches 5 extend longitudinally of the base strip and transversely of said cross strips, each penetrating one inwardly folded edge portion 3, the main portion of the base strip and the cross strips 4. i

A top strip 6 of suitable material such as textile fabric, extends longitudinally of the base strip and traverses the cross strips 4 intermediate their ends, the longitudinal edges of the top strip 6 being spaced from the edges of the inwardly folded portions 3 so as to expose portions of the cross strips 4 between them. Suitable means is provided for securing the top strip E and the cross strips 4 to the base strip A at points spaced in` wardly from the lines of stitches 5 and as shown such means comprises lines of stitches 1 each extending longitudinally of the top strip adjacent one edge thereof and transversely of the cross strips and penetrating the top strip, the cross strips and the base strip. It is desirable that the lines of stitches 5 and 'l include a plurality of superposed stitches A8 at the points where said lines traverse the cross strips 4, so that the cross strips are firmly secured to the base strip, The spaces between the edges of the top strip 6 and the inwardly folded edge portions B form a channel to guide and receive the hooks as the latter are connected to the cross strips. line of stitches 5 and the adjacent line of stitches 1 traverse the cross strips or bars 4 and form a plurality of independent pockets of which said cross strips constitute the sides arranged one behind the other with their openings transverse of the strip and adapted to be engaged by a hook I2, the openings of the pockets being arranged in a direction transverse to the direction of pull of the hook on the cross strip.

Preferably each cross strip 4 comprises a, plurality of plies of material stitched together, and as shown, each cross strip is formed of a single piece of textile fabric having its longitudinal edge portions folded inwardly as at 9 and brought into superimposed' relation to each other by a fold IIl in the strip that extends along the longitudinal median linethereof. Lines of stitches Il extending longitudinally of the strip secure the several plies together. The cross strips 4 thusl are rela tively stiff and strong so as to reenforce the base strip against unintentional folding or wrinkling, which is especially desirable where the fastener is used on a, garment such as a brassire.

Now referrlngto the section B of the fastener, there is one hook I2 for each row of fastener elements C, each hook including a base I3 secured to the strip 2 in any suitable manner, and a bill I4 which projects from the strip so that it may be inserted beneath one of the cross strips 4 for connection theretoas shown in Figure 3. Preferably the cross strip 4 is ofva width equal to or greater than the length of the hook bill I4 so that the hook wi1l-be prevented from swinging in planes perpendicular to the plane of the base strip and also to ensure adequate snug frictional contact of the hook with the cross strip and base strip to prevent accidental slipping or disconnection of the hook from the cross strip.

With such a construe# tion it is impossible. for one hook to be" connected to one fastener element of one pair andthe' other hook to be connected to one fastener' of another pair in such-a manner as to cause thesection B to be thrown out of line with or in diagonal 'or twisted relation to the section A. In otherwords, the' structure will ensure that whencne hook I2 ene gages one fastener element of a pairathefother hook will simultaneously engage the other fastener element of the same pair so thatthe twose'ctions will be connected in exact longitudinal'alinement with each other. f

It will'be observed that the base strip is severable between the cross strips 4 and that with the base strip constructed as shown and described, the extremity of the strip may be folded inwardly and hemmed without difficulty as indicated at I 5. Also the whole tape or section A is fiat, of minimum bulk, fiexible and at the same time sufiiciently stiff to prevent unintentional folding or wrinkling thereof.

Utilization of a single cross strip 4 for forming the two fastener elements of a pair overcomes the difficulty heretoforey encountered in obtaining and maintaining alinement of the fastener elements of one row with corresponding velements of the other row transversely of the basel strip in double fastener tapes of this type. Moreover, by forming the base strip of one piece of material and each cross strip of a single piece of material, the

difficulty heretofore encountered in stitching to-Vv gether two tapes each having'afsingle row of fastener elements is obvlated. Furthermore, my fastener tape A can be easily manufactured on automatic machines at relatively low cost, and great strength and durability with a minimum of material and labor in constructing the tape, are obtained.

While I have shown the section A provided with a plurality of fastener elements C arranged in two parallel rows so that the hooks may selectively engage any of the pairs of fastener elements, it will be understood that the section A may have only a single fastener element or one pair of fastener elements andi that the section B would in such cases have a single hook I2 or a pair of hooks respectively.

What I claim is: 1. An adjustable fastener part comprising a base strip having its longitudinal edge portions folded inwardly at the same side of the strip, and atleast one cross-strip disposed transversely of said base strip, and stitches securing said crossstrip to said base strip with the extremities of said cross-strip located beneath said inwardly folded edge portions of said base strip so that a pocket is provided between said base strip and said crossstrip to permit engagement of a hook with said cross-Strip.

2. The adjustable fastener part set forth in claim l wherein said base strip is formed of textile fabric and said cross-strip comprises a plurality of superposed plies of textile fabric stitched together.

An adjustable fastener part comprising a base strip, and a plurality of cross-strips disposed transversely and spaced longitudinally ofsaid base strip, and lines of stitches running longitudinally of said base'stri-p and transversely of said cross-strips and securing said cross-strips to the base strip; and a plurality of cross-strips disposedtransversely and spaced longitudinally of said base strip," a top strip running longitudinally of saidbase strip and traversing said cross-strip intermediate ther'en'ds, lines lof stitches running longitudinally of'saidbase strip'and said top strip and 'penetrating'themv and 'said crossstripsto secure 4the `latter tc said vbase stripand fastening means'for securing cross-'strips tosaid base at points spaced from said lines'fof-,stitchestsothat the portions of' each 'cross-strip "between saidlon-v gitudinal' llines ffof stitches and:l said fastening meansare spaced `fromisaid base strip-to receive vthe billof a hookand permit-engagementof such hook with said portion of the cross-strip.

5. The .adjustable fastener part described in claim 4 wherein the longitudinaled-ge portions of saidbase strip are folded inwardly over the ex-4v tremities of said cross-strips, and the last-men-l tioned means comprises a line of ystitches running longitudinally of said base strip through the latter, each inwardly folded edge portion and said cross-strips.

The adjustable fastener part set forth in claim 4 in which said base strip, and said top strip are formed of textile fabric and each crossstrip comprises a plurality of plies` of textile fabric stitched together, and wherein the longitudinal edge portions of said base strip are folded inwardly over the extremities of said cross strips,

vand the last-mentioned means comprises aline of stitches running longitudinally of said base strip through vthe latter, each inwardly folded edge portion and said cross-strips.

7. A n adjustable fastener comprising va part including a tape having two spaced parallel rows of fastener elements extending longitudinally thereof, and another part having two hooks, one

for each row of fastenerelements, said hooks be^ ing spaced on the corresponding part a distance equal to that between the longitudinal median lines of said row of fastener elements, said fastener elements being arranged in parallel pairs extending transversely of the tape with one element of each pair in each of said rows, and said pairs of fastener elements being spaced apart distances substantially greater than the distances be secured to one part of a garment; a plurality of bars of fabric secured transversely to said strip of fabric by rows of stitching extending entirely across the strip so as to form a plurality of independent pockets of which the bars constitute the sides-arranged one behindthe other with their openings transverse to said strip and adapted to be alternatively engaged by cooperating means on another part of said garment that is to be connected to the rst said part, said bars being spaced apart and the strip being severable between the bars.

10. A fastening device for a garment comprising a plurality of initially separate bars of fabric arranged in parallel relationship secured by rows of stitching extending entirely across the strip to one part of a garment so as to form a plurality of pockets of Which the bars constitute the sides arranged one behind the other and adapted to be alternatively engaged by cooperating means on another part of said garment that is to be connected to the first said part, the openings of said pockets being arranged in a direction transverse to the direction of pull.

A garment having one of its main body walls constitutinga fastening device comprising a strip of fabric secured to one part thereof; a'plurality of pockets associated with said strip arranged one behind the other with their openings transverse thereto to coact with engaging means associated with another part of said garment that is to be connected to the rst said part, adapted to engage said pockets alternatively so as to adjust th size of the garment.

12. As an article of manufacture abase strip having its longitudinal edges folded inwardly at the same side of the strip, a plurality of cross strips disposed transversely and spaced longitudinally of said base strip with the extremities thereof located beneath said inwardly folded edge portions of the base strip, and lines of stitches running longitudinally of said base strip and transversely of said cross strips and penetrating said inwardly folded edge portions and the main portion of the base strip and the cross strips.
