Description

Feb. 27, 1945.
B. D. HABER SELFIGNITING ATTACHMENT AND METHOD or MAKING THE SAME Filed na 21, 943
Application d D. Haber, Ba ton, fihio ma 21. 1M3, Serial No. seam ii en mi. 131-4) The present invention relates to self-igniting attachments, in particular forms in connection with cigarettes, cigars or the like. 4 Heretoforcgit was generally necessary to use a match or a lighter for lighting cigarettes or cigars. Aside from the inconvenience of carrying matches or lighters, these lighting devices were not quite satisfactory when the cigarette or cigar was to be lighted in stormy or similar weather.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks.
It is another object of this invention to pro;- vide means adapted to form an integral unit with cigarettes or cigars which will make it possible easily to light a cigarette or cigar without any additional means.
It is a further object to provide a lighting attachment to be connected with the cigarette or cigar, which comprises self-igniting or pyrophoric material normally held in an inactive condition but adapted to be made effective at any-desired time by exposing it to air.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a method of making capsules containing a self-igniting material such as' pyrophoric metal, which capsules may easily be connected to slow-burning material and while normally holding the self-igniting material in ineffective conch-- tion. may easily and manually be handled so as to cause self-lighting material to inflame the said slowburning material.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more clearly from the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 illustrates in perspective a capsule according to the invention in connection with a cigarette.
Figure 2 is an enlarged section along the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section along the line i of Figure 1.
Figure 4 shows on an enlarged scale a developed top view of the capsule according to the invention.
Figure 5 shows the invention in connection with a cigar.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, Figure 1 shows a cigarette in having connected to one end thereof a capsule according to the invention, which capsule is generally designated Ii. This capsule comprises a cup shaped bottom, part it, a flanged part i 3 and a top part it. The cup shaped part i2 contains self-igniting material it, i. e., material which, when exposed to oxygen or oxygen-containing gases such as air, will ignite. Materials of this kind ar well-known and may be of any desired type. for instance of the group called the pyrophoric metals, such as pyrophoric iron, Dyrophoric lead, etc. Such materials are usually kept in alcohol, in which state they are inert. The flanged part it is engaged by, and in an airtight manner connected to the top part Hi, which may be of any desired shape suitable for connection with the element, the lighting or igniting of which is desired. It is preferable to place the self-igniting material in the capsule i i in wet condition, i. e., when still permeated with alco hol, and then quickly to seal thecapsule by placing the top part H upon and connecting the same in an airtight manner to the cup-shaped bottom part i2.- If desired, however, any other means may be employed for preventing a premature ignition of this self-igniting material in the capsule.
In the specific example, shown in the top part i5 is provided with two connecting flaps it, which are adaptedto beglued or otherwise connected to the cigarette end. The top part it is furthermore provided with a tongu i7, adapted to be manually ra ped and torn oil the capsule so as to expose the self-igniting material the drawing,
. It to air. The capsule may be made of any desired material which is adapted to normally prevent the access of air to the self-igniting material, while, on the other hand, allowing at any desired time a partial destruction of a part of the capsule so as to cause access of air to the self-igniting material for the ignition thereof. Furthermore, that portion of the capsule i2, which contains the self-igniting material l5, must be infiammable so as to allow the ignited material to contact the slow-burning material mentioned above, for instance the tobacco of a cigarette. Preferably, the cup-shaped portion i2 of the capsule is made of thermoplastic inflammable material, whereas the top portion is is preferably made of airtight material which normally has great resistance against tearing, but, once tear is started, loses this resistancer Such material is, for instance, the ma since, as mentioned above, the flange i3 is airtight and glued or otherwise connected to the The fact that the top part it is top part it.
tom in at It will materially facilitate the further tearing of the top part I4 and thereby the exposure or material i! to air when such exposure is desired.
It is understood, 01' course, that the mate to be used are not poisonous both singly and in combination.
It is further understood that the invention is by no means limited to the particular shape the capsule shown in the drawing, but that it also comprises any modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
l. A self-igniting attachment for use in connection with cigarettes or cigars, comprising in combination a container, self-igniting material arranged in said container and adapted, when brought into contact with air, to ignite, means msociated with said container for normally pre venting the access of air to said self-igniting material, and connecting means for connecting said container with the cigarette or cigar.
2. In combination, a cigarette or cigar, a cap oottcm portion, placing in said container material adapted to ignite when brought in contact with air, and closing said container in an airtight manner to normally prevent access of air to the material in said container.
